Tour de Romandie - Stage 2
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/profile.jpg

The first stage in line takes the riders from Délemont to Yverdon-les-Bains, on the edge of Lac de Neuchâtel. The rating is flat, but there is definitely some height gained in the early part of the stage. The riders have to climb directly from the start, with a second considerable hill at the midpoint of the stage, followed by some smaller ones towards the finish line. As one of two opportunities for the sprinters, they don't want to let this one go to waste.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Marchewka open the attacks today. There is a mountain sprint in ten kilometers, the polka dot would be a nice bonus for some.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli join the duo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg struggles to complete the final twenty seconds. The peloton has backed off, the lead already 1'30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/03.jpg

At the Col des Rangiers of third category, six points to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill, four to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman and two to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli. There is a category two climb later in the stage which awards ten points to the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg has joined but couldn't participate in the sprint. The peloton follows over the top at three minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/04.jpg

The maximal lead the five leaders got was five minutes, one per rider was the outcome of the negotiations. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Mapei, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Bakkafrost, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Azteca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Xero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli are the teams making sure they are caught before we reach Yverdon-les-Bains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/05.jpg

The intermediate sprint in La Sagne is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Marchewka's refusal to sprint results in a gap...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/06.jpg

...which ends up costing him his position in the breakaway. The Pole is caught by the peloton with 90 kilometer to go. The other four still maintain a lead of two minutes and thirty seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/07.jpg

The Col des Etroits ends with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman taking ten points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill eight. It means they are tied with fourteen points, resulting in a match of rock-paper-scissors at the end of the stage to determine who wears the polka dot jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli six points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg four. The leader of the peloton will receive the final two...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/08.jpg

...which becomes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Hussein. Sixty kilometer to go, the gap has gone back up to 3'30 with the peloton taking it easy on the climb. No rider got in trouble at the back as a result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/09.jpg

The final sprint before the actual finish takes place in Cuarny, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli is the fastest. He beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill does a Marchewka but without the consequences. The lead over the peloton is only a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/10.jpg

Less than twenty kilometer to go and the peloton has split in two parts over one of those smaller hills I warned about in the introduction. All sprinters and main GC contenders are at the front, but yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio and most of his teammates are left behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/11.jpg

We still have three leaders heading into the final five kilometer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg being the quitter, thought their lead is minimal. A group of approximately 30 riders is left as front peloton, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Boivin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Sobota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac as sprinters. GC riders who might take some time today are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Barbio has made his way up to the second group, which contains almost all other riders. The gap is quite considerable though, Duolingo has to work hard to close it in the final five kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Pibernik continues to lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec as the breakaway is finally caught, falling 3000 meters short. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bester and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto behind them, with the other sprinters in the middle of the group. The peloton is given at 40 seconds with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Lienhard now pushing hard to get pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt back in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Pibernik has to release pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec just before the final kilometer, which might be detrimental for his chances as all other sprinters who had no leadout got onto his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Boivin right behind the Slovene in prime positions. Clearly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Lienhard rode faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Pibernik, as the peloton is now coming out of the corner, the gap almost nonexistent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec still holding out fine with 500 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Boivin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini the only other contenders from left to right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Sobota and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre are too far back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve leads the sprint for seventh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/15.jpg

A strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec today, as the others cannot get past him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini falls back, not having the legs today, but the battle for the other podium positions is still close, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac currently having a slight edge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/16.jpg

A dance is appropriate, what a sprint from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Luka Mezgec today! He wins in Yverdon-les-Bains and makes the Trans team very happy!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Maksimov finishes in second place, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto surprisingly taking third against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Boivin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini fifth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Drapac sixth as his legs ran out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/18.jpg

The sprint from the rest of the group is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Monsalve. Unfortunately for him, only the top three receive bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Bennett complete the top ten. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Sobota didn't get further than sixteenth and nineteenth respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Romandie/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt wins the sprint for what is 34th place. However, with some riders in the front group choosing not to sprint, there wasn't a substantial gap to award time differences on this stage. Everyone except eight riders who lost minutes finish in the same time as the winner.

This is good news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Antonio Barbio, as he keeps the yellow jersey. Not much changes at the top of the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Novardianto making the biggest jump to seventeenth. The points classification mirrors the stage result, meaning green goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Thill choses paper and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Neuman rock, hence the polka dot jersey goes to the former. The youth and teams classification remain led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Oliveira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Duolingo. Things will definitely change tomorrow, when we head towards the hills!
