After a chaotic stage yesterday, a lot of teams will probably be hoping for a much calmer day today, and a mass sprint at the end. However, looking at the favourite’s list, the race organisation also believes a puncheur like Benoot could take the win here.
Today, the riders have 7 KoM-sprints. Three of those in Prestbury (4th cat.) and four in Alderley Edge (3rd cat.). Only 5 km after the start is the climb in Prestbury. Riesebeek was the first to attack, but has to be content with a second place, as Brockhoff takes the maximum of the points, which are five. Van Hoecke then takes the last point. Kasperkiewicz leads the KoM with 23 points, while number two Van Baarle has eleven. Since those riders are first and third in the GC, we probably won’t be seeing them in the attack today.
6 km further we find the first intermediate sprint of the day. Brockhoff and Riesebeek grab most of the points, but the peloton is just around the corner.
Itami grabs the last two points, the Japanese GCN rider hoping to be involved in the battle for the green jersey.
Riesebeek gets reeled back in by the peloton, while Brockhoff manages to stay ahead. With 145 km to the finish line we get a double attack from Zalgiris, as Einhorn and Hamilton first reach the wheel of the Polar rider to then relentlessly leave him behind. Einhorn feels like his team could be scoring some nice KoM-points and explains his teammate now is the perfect time to work together.
The ascent to Alderley Edge seems to be too hard for Hamilton though, as he is back In the peloton in no time. Einhorn manages to stay ahead and score six KoM-points, while Arashiro grabs four and Hermans the last two. De Gendt and Ostergaard trying to reach the head of the race as well.
With exactly 100 km to the finish line, those five names are together and sprint for six more KoM-points on the second ascent of the hill to Alderley Edge. Hermans convincingly wins the sprint ahead of Arashiro and De Gendt, while Einhorn and Ostergaard grab no points. The peloton at only 3’, as Nordstrom, Minions and Bennelong are controlling the race back there.
Moments later, Hermans wins another KoM-sprint, putting him into second with 13 points, 10 points less than leader Kasperkiewicz. De Gendt and Ostergaard grab the remaining points. Spengler suffered a puncture, but is already back in the peloton.
Very close battle between Hermans and Arashiro on the penultimate ascent to Alderley Edge, and the jury decides the six points go to the Japanese, who is now third in the KoM with 14 points! The Belgian grabs four and has 17, which is still six less than the leader with two KoM-climbs to come. The peloton still at 3’ with 62 km to go.
30 km to the finish line and the peloton, led by the same three sprinter teams throughout the stage, is 1’30” behind the five leaders. King Power, team of yellow jersey Kasperkiewicz, isn’t helping, which is quite normal, as all the riders in the leading group are more than 10 minutes behind him in the GC. Still two hills to come though, so catching the five leaders could turn out to be trickier than was accounted for.
Another tight battle between Hermans and Arashiro on the same hill, but this time the Belgian takes the six points! He now has the same amount of KoM-points as Kasperkiewicz, with the last hill coming soon.
De Gendt wins the last KoM-sprint ahead of Arashiro and Hermans. The Bakkafrost rider only takes one point, but it is enough to be the sole KoM-leader! The peloton at 1’ with 17 km to the finish line.
Einhorn can’t follow the pace up front anymore and drops back to the peloton. Arashiro couldn’t manage to secure the KoM-jersey, but is still thinking about the stage victory! The Japanese leaves his three breakaway companions behind with 11.5 km to go!
The other three work together and reel him back in with 7.5 km to the finish line. The peloton at 30”, still the same domestiques of the same three teams working there!
As a wise man once said: “Their little promenade is over, the group has been overhauled!”
4 km left and Zepuntke takes the lead in the peloton. Some sprinters already in the first positions are Kump, Rowe, Van Asbroeck and Manninen.
And with 2 km to the finish line the German leaves the rest to the real sprinters and their lead-outs! Kennett and Meyer are in first position, but their leader Howard is a bit further in fifth! Between the Bennelong riders we see the Minion duo of Lindeman and Vesely! Kump is right next to Vesely, as the other sprinters present seem to be lone wolves. The other sprinters, according to their position right now, are Van Asbroeck, Rowe, Keukeleire, Perera, Manninen, Eislers and white jersey Hsu. Sprinters like Appollonio, Itami and Zabel are even further behind and seem to be lost before the sprint has really begun.
Have a look at that! Lead-outs Kennett and Lindeman are not holding back, which causes a small gap between the riders of Minions and Bennelong and the rest! Kump now tries closing the gap with 1.7 km to go, but this is definitely costing the Slovenian some energy!
What a strange sprint! Both Kennett and Meyer can’t continue going that fast, which makes their leader Howard decide to follow Vesely, who seems to be unable to follow his own lead-out Lindeman at the moment! Kump and the other sprinters use the confusing moment to come back, as there are still 1.4 km to go!
Far from an ideal situation for Vesely, who starts his sprint under the flamme rouge with Howard and Kump behind him! Eislers and Keukeleire are in fourth and fifth, with white jersey Hsu following them and trying to make this race even better for King Power! All other sprinters mentioned earlier, except for Zabel, form a sprinting group of fifteen riders!
What was to be expected, is now happening! Vesely loses speed and gets overtaken by Kump and Eislers entering the last 700 metres, which has a small incline of 1.5%! The other sprinters who seem to be still in the mix for the stage win are Hsu, Rowe, Keukeleire, Howard, Van Asbroeck and Manninen!
As Eislers and Howard lose positions at 500 metres of the finish line, Hsu and Rowe are now at the head of the race together with Kump! Keukeleire still holds on for fourth and might have that final push in him, as Appollonio and Itami are now gaining ground as well!
Only 300 metres to go and Rowe simply degraded the other two leaders in the last 200 metres! Manninen now generating a lot of speed though!
Manninen not taking prisoners anymore! The Fin flies by everyone and is on the verge of overtaking Rowe in the last 200 metres of the stage!
Manninen in the lead entering the last 100 metres, surely this can’t go wrong anymore?!
And it doesn’t! Manninen wins the second stage of the Cheshire Cycling Tour, with Rowe being the second fastest rider today!
Great job by white jersey Hsu, finishing on the podium today! Van Asbroeck and Kump complete the top-5, while the other top-10 places go to Appollonio (6th), Eislers (7th), Perera (8th), Itami (9th) and Keukeleire (10th). Big disappointment for Vesely and Howard, not even finishing inside the top-10 after having their teams work so hard all day. Interesting to see is that there are now four riders with 25 points in the battle for the green jersey!
