The fifth stage is clearly the queen’s stage of this Tour of Pologne. Cattaneo and Gesink will definitely take a lot of time on the other favourites in the time trial on the last day of this Tour, so the others should try to get away from them as far as possible today.
An interesting breakaway has formed with twelve riders in it: Gallopin, Robov (5Th KoM, but still quite far behind on leader Vichot), De Vos, Conci, Benoot, Squire, Rodriguez Galindo, Landa, Hughes, Petilli, Raileanu and most importantly Betancourt, who’s 13th in the GC at 20” of yellow jersey Bennett!
On the warm-up mountain of the day (third category) it becomes clear today won’t be the day of Benoot. He gets dropped by the other leaders, of whom Robov takes the first six KoM-points of the day ahead of De Vos and Landa. The peloton already more than 5’ behind with 140 km to go.
Robov also takes the maximum of the points at the second mountain of the day (2nd cat.) ahead of Petilli and Rodriguez Galindo. The peloton at 6’ with 120 km to go. Now the riders will spend around 60 km in the valley. There are riders of around seven teams working in the peloton, all of them domestiques of GC teams without anyone in the breakaway: Duolingo, Xero, Carlsberg, Zalgiris, Mapei, Valio and Farfetch.
Two intermediate sprints in the valley, but the leaders opt not to sprint and keep rotating instead. The peloton is still nearing quickly though, 90 km to go and the difference now at 2’30”.
The last part of today’s stage is going up the same climb of first category three times. The leading group breaks in different pieces on the first ascent, with Squire taking most of the KoM-points ahead of Betancourt, Hughes, Gallopin and Robov. A peloton of less than a hundred riders follows at 2’30” with around 50 km to go! Ulissi (17th GC at 46”), Hiratsuka (15th GC at 20”) and Kump (18th GC at 51”) are the biggest victims so far.
40 km to go and on the second ascent of the 1st cat. climb while we still have ten leaders. The only riders not here from the original breakaway are Landa and Benoot. Peloton at 1’20”.
At the same time, white jersey Areruya (7th GC at 20”) is being dropped! In the same group we can also see KoM-leader Vichot, Uwizeyimana (26th at 1’40”), Scarponi (28th at 1’40”) and Schreurs (14th at 20”)!
33 km to go and 3 km left to climb on the penultimate ascent of the day and Squire attacks! The peloton at 1’ from the leaders.
The American is feeling good and has a big lead at the top of the mountain! 30 km to go for him, while Areruya is trying to get back in the peloton!
Robov second at the top, but already 1’15” behind Squire! The peloton, led by Zalgiris, now at half a minute. Areruya back in the peloton though, and he brought Uwizeyimana, Scarponi and Schreurs back with him!
Squire has 15 km to go and now starts his last climb of the day! Rodriguez Galindo and Raileanu are one minute behind, the other riders have already been reeled back in by the peloton, that’s an additional 1’ behind and now being led by Xero Racing!
10 km to go and the two pursuers are coming very close to leader Squire! They’re all more than five minutes behind Gesink in the GC though, Xero not really picking up the pace and losing 15” over the leader now.
Aha! Slagter attacks and Yates answers! 7.5 km to go now, Squire has got a lead of 30” over his two chasers and an additional minute over these guys!
Bester and Meurisse do a great job for their leader, Bennett, and bring the two attackers back with 6.5 km to go.
The only victim of the attack was Preidler, who will probably be losing time again today! Xero now controlling again and not riding for the win it seems. 5 km to go for Squire, who has 45” over Rodriguez Galindo and Raileanu and another 45” over the peloton!
Nepomnyachsniy tried to take back some time with an attack with 4.5 km to go, but was immediately denied to do so by the Xero boys, who still have four domestiques (Meurisse, Bester, Nikiema and Schleck) ahead of Areruya and Bennett. Not bad.
Squire enters the last 4 km with a lead of 1’15” over the peloton, where Slagter is now attacking again!
Senni and again Yates tried to go with the Dutchman, but once again Bester crushes their dreams! Impressive performance by the South-African today! The peloton still 1’ behind Squire with 3 km to climb!
Oh no! Nepomnyachsniy, who just tried to attack, has overestimated himself quite a bit, and now has to let go of the peloton! Very bad news for Swisslion, who were hoping for a good GC with the Kazak’s time-trial capacities!
2 km to go and only Squire left in front of the peloton! His lead now very quickly going down, while Min is preparing the sprint for Gesink!
Areruya takes over for yellow jersey Bennett under the flamme rouge! Can the Kiwi put the cherry on the pie after an incredible team performance today?! Other riders in the first rows are Denifl, Gesink, Yates, Penasa, Pomoshnikov, Jang, Guldhammer, Fabbro and De la Cruz. Great attempt today by Squire, but the race is one km too long. Close, but no Polish cigar.
With 500 metres to go Bennett takes over from Areruya and starts his sprint. Meurisse decides he hasn’t worked enough today and joins the sprint as well! Warbasse joins the sprint as well, great team performance by Carlsberg as well!
Only 200 metres to go and yellow jersey Bennett taking the lead! Yates seems to be going the fastest though, while Gesink loses some places!
Bennett looks like he’s going to win it though! Less than a hundred metres to go! There’s a small gap behind Areruya, some riders could be losing time!
Not Bennett though! The yellow jersey wins his second stage in Poland after a stunning display of strength by his team, Xero Racing!
Yates finishes second ahead of Denifl, who’s third just as he was in the first stage and now climbs to second in the GC. In the same group we see a very strong Meurisse, Penasa, Guldhammer, De la Cruz, Gesink and Areruya finishing fourth to ninth.
Then there’s a small gap over the MOL and Carlsberg duo’s, as well as the other GC men such as Novak, Dunbar and Senni. However, this gap is alright according to the jury and they don’t lose any time. After the 38th rider there is a similar gap, which does lead to time differences! Slagter, Schreurs, Gebrezgabihier, Betancourt and Eg lose 1’14”. So does Gilanipoor, who brought back teammate Nepomnyachsniy to that group, also limiting his losses to 1’14”. Preidler loses 2’20” today.
