165 hilly km await the riders in the third stage of the Tour of Pologne. 3 mountains of first category and another three of second category might give the versatile puncheurs the benefit over the pure puncheurs. In addition to those six mountains, the finish is also uphill. Let’s find out if yellow jersey Bennett is still feeling good.
Two similar riders go in the attack: Robov and Nzeke. So far, Andorra and Podium Ambition make sure the gap does not get bigger than one minute. Those teams are most likely thinking about the KoM.
Et voila, exactly those two teams send a rider up front: Le Court (3rd KoM) and Urcelay join the head of the race, but so does Vichot (2nd KoM). The gap to the peloton immediately grows to three minutes.
While Vichot is saying something to manager Sykkel_Freak through the team's communication system, the riders cross the first and only intermediate sprint of the day, in Nowy Targ. From now on they will head into the more hilly part of the stage. Their lead over the peloton is 3’15” with 120 km to go.
The Frenchman is clearly the strongest on the first climb of the day (1st category), and overtakes the KoM-lead from Mas.
On the following short but steep mountain of second category, Nzeke is the strongest. Le Court crosses the line as third rider, which brings him in second position in the KoM-standings, 10 points behind Vichot. 85 km to go, the peloton at 3’.
Nzeke is also the first to cross the line on the second mountain of first category. He comes a bit closer to Vichot and Le Court, who are behind him here. Peloton at 2’30” with 62 km to go.
Around fifty riders have already let go of the peloton. Many of those riders belong to Andorra and Podium Ambition, whose main job today was to be in the breakaway. Pomoshnikov (17th) and Jang (37th) have also been reported to be dropped out of the peloton!
Puncture for Dowsett! Bad luck for the rider of GCN, who gets blown back to the back of the race! More bad luck for his team though, as Schreurs is also no longer in the peloton of 112 riders and needs to close the gap quickly!
Vichot takes the maximum points on the second climb of second category, with Robov and Urcelay no longer being part of the leading group! The peloton at 2’30” with 45 km to go!
Pomoshnikov thought he had made it back to the peloton with 40 km to go, but at that moment another 24 riders get dropped! Bilbao and Landa are not in the peloton anymore, but the good news for GCN is that Schreurs has made it back to the peloton!
Pomoshnikov seems to be thriving on adrenaline and makes it back to the peloton! The others who were dropped could not follow him but are also still not too far away as can be seen on the picture. The three leaders have a 52 second lead with 33.5 km to go.
Last climb of first category of the day, Vichot extends his KoM-lead! Noppe takes some points that are still left, as the peloton comes really close with 23 km to go.
13 km to go and Le Court gets reeled back in by the peloton which is led by Canadian champion De Vos. His leader, Kump, is doing well and riding in fourth position. Ulissi has been at the back of the peloton for a while now.
Just before the top of the last climb of the day (not counting the uphill finish), Vichot gets swallowed by the peloton. Nzeke fights them off, and comes closer to the Frenchman in the KoM-classification, while also overtaking Le Court.
Siskevicius attacks with 3 km left! Kump feels this is the right move and immediately follows him, behind them we see the white jersey of Areruya!
2 km to go and the two still have a gap, with Kump not taking over! Areruya didn’t manage to close the gap so he’s now back in fifth position, being followed by a strong Zabel! In third and fourth position we see Betancourt and De la Cruz, with most of the other favourites also in the first rows of the peloton.
Kump, you sly fox! The Nordstrom rider still refusing to take over while the two leaders are under the flamme rouge! Betancourt now trying to close the gap on his own!
And there he goes, with 400 metres to go! He immediately blows Siskevicius away, this should already be decided!
He might be overdoing it a bit with a final jump to make sure he wins the stage, even though he’s almost 100 metres ahead of Siskevicius. Doesn’t matter for his manager though, as this definitely makes up for yesterday’s fiasco for Nordstrom! Zalgiris will have to be happy with a second place.
Zabel comes back to overtake Betancourt who just misses out on some extra seconds. Yates finishes fifth, with the other top-10 spots going to Penasa, Goh, Slagter, Bennett and Chamorro.
