Welcome to Poland for the first stage of the Tour de Pologne. No time for the GC riders to warm up with an easy flat stage, but 170 km with hills that just get harder until the very end. The riders will start with two local parcours. On the first one, they will have to tackle a climb in Staniszow (3rd category) three times. That should be okay for even the worst climbers and puncheurs. However, the second local parcours is harder with three times the ascent next to the Kaplica Cmentarna (cemetery chapel) of second category. After those six climbs, the riders have thirty flat kilometres until the steep last climb of the day: a muddy climb to Karpatka. This mountain is not called the muddy climb to Karpatka by the locals, but by me, as it is raining hard in Poland, which makes the dirt-road to Karpatka even harder to conquer.
The riders are ready to start in terrible weather conditions, and start right next to the hotel of the riders and staff of Xero Racing. Rumours have it manager cunego59 from Bralirwa – Stevens Bikes was there as well yesterday evening, entering Areruya’s room just before midnight with two Polish women. When asking Xero’s manager jandal7 for some commentary, he replied: “Cunego is my cuzzie, we actually went to the Maccas together yesterday but he’s a real muppet if he thinks Areruya wants to spend his talent in the CT.”
Five riders are not afraid of the cold and rain and decide to give it a go and look for that first KoM-jersey in this Tour of Pologne, and maybe more. The brave souls are Mas, Vichot, Le Court, Kanerva and Noppe for home team Fablok.
Kanerva is the first to attack but doesn’t grab any points. Vichot wins the first six KoM-points of the day, with Le Court and Mas grabbing four and two points.
The peloton isn’t too far behind, still leaving space for other riders to join the break. Kurianov does so for Swisslion, while Hermans and Eliad make it two man up front for Bakkafrost and Fablok – Chocolate Jacques.
Second climb of the day in Staniszow and it’s Fablok vs. Bakkafrost. Eliad takes six points, but Vichot grabs four, which brings his total to ten. The other two points go to Hermans, while Kurianov has been dropped.
Third and last ascent of the day in Staniszow. Le Court is the fastest and takes six points, Vichot gets four and Eliad two. 83 km to go and the peloton at 2’30”. Polar, Campari and GCN setting the pace there, as the riders will now go to the second local parcours with three times the “cemetery climb”.
Before we start climbing again, we have the intermediate sprint in Jelenia Gora. Noppe beats Mas, Vichot is the best of the rest.
Suddenly the weather conditions become even worse, as there is now a lot of wind in Poland! Breaks are now starting to occur, and there are some interesting names who weren’t paying enough attention and are now in trouble! The whole team of Azteca is left behind! They get brought back rather quickly, but this was a very clear warning for the riders to be at the front of the peloton.
Riding on the sidewalk Is quite usual during cobbled races, but Noppe and the others seem to prefer it over the Polish roads as well.
Well, that’s a big chapel. Mas likes this climb though, as it’s longer than the first climb of the day. He takes ten points, the other points go to Vichot, Kanerva, Hermans and Le Court. Vichot increases his lead in the KoM-classification. Peloton at 2’30” with +- 50 km to go.
After a short descent the riders immediately do the second category climb again. More than fifty riders are in a second group now, which includes Squire, Benoot, Raileanu, Bernard, Duarte, Schleck, Pedrero, Aasvold, Jang, Gilanipoor, Petilli, Kebede, Juodvalkis, but most importantly, Preidler! They do come back, but are at the back of the peloton while it’s climbing, so gaps could occur quite fast again!
Kanerva is not a happy man, and we understand. He had a puncture uphill, which sees him drop back to the peloton.
Mas is too strong for the others in the breakaway and easily takes another ten KoM-points. Noppe, Hermans, Vichot and Eliad take the other point. Vichot leads the KoM with 26, Mas is 4 behind.
And again most of the same riders as earlier are in trouble, including Preidler! Some “new” names in this group are Fernandez, Skjerping, Meijers, Gougeard and Landa. Bernard makes sure teammate Benoot and Preidler make it back once again, but as they’re on the steeper parts of the climb the gap could form again.
Mas is too strong for the others for the third time on the “chapel climb”, and overtakes Vichot in the KoM-classification. The other points go to Le Court and Eliad, as well as some minor points to Conci and Schreurs. Now we head onto the final climb in 34 km!
24 km to go and Mas is the last rider to be caught back by the peloton. GCN at the front, with both Dowsett and Schreurs!
Exactly 10 km to go. Wind speeds at almost 50 km/h, which makes the possibility of echelons just before the final climb high! Aramco, Duolingo and GCN now doing the work in the peloton of 125 riders.
The riders enter the last 5k, going slightly uphill already. The pace is not too high, but Preidler and Benoot still at the back of the peloton.
The last 2.3 km is the trickiest part though, being very steep and also going off-road! Warbasse, Cattaneo, Gesink, Bennett, Schreurs, Slagter, Yates and Betancourt know they have to be up front now, and that is exactly where they are.
Schreurs and Betancourt at the front with 1.5 km to go! Bennett is losing the feeling with the head of the race, but has teammate Areruya now in third place! Warbasse is also dropping back while following Yates, but he has teammate Eg gaining some places on the right side of the road. Bilbao is moving up some places as well now, and so are Siskevicius and Ulissi.
Going under the flamme rouge most of the riders mentioned are still in the same position. The Carlsberg-duo no longer in contention for the top-10 places it seems, while some riders are moving up in the first twenty positions for the first time: Denifl, Penasa and Pomoshnikov.
500 metres to go and Slagter takes the lead! Bennett is also back in contention, while Siskevicius has been dropped. Bilbao has also been dropped, but brought teammate De La Cruz to the middle of the first group. There’s a gap after the first 18 riders now, the names of the first riders in the second group are Warbasse, Guldhammer and Senni.
300 steep metres to go and it’s Bennett who’s the first to launch his sprint!
He remains in the lead with 200 metres to go, but Gesink is coming fast!
100 metres to go and the kiwi still in the lead! It seems to be between the two of them for the victory!
50 metres to go! Bennett still in first position, with teammate Areruya battling for third!
And he holds on to the first place! Bennett wins the first stage in Poland, with Gesink finishing second!
Areruya beats Slagter, but it’s Denifl who completes the podium with a great late jump! Betancourt finishes sixth.
Dunbar does a great job with a seventh place, and sees the rest of the top-10 being completed by Yates, Cattaneo and Hiratsuka. Five more riders enter in the same time: Schreurs, Gebrezgabihier, De la Cruz, Penasa and Meurisse. Then we see Ulissi and Pomoshnikov losing 26 seconds, Guldhammer 33, Senni 42, Nepomnyachsniy 53 and Warbasse 53 as well in 21nd place. The other riders lose over a minute, with Preidler and Benoot losing 2’42”!
