Welcome to Keszthely, the town that hosts the start and finish of the Betonexpressz GP race. Situated on the western shore of the famous Lake Balaton, it is a sprinters race. Taking the riders through the gently rolling roads surrounding the lake. We have a sunny day in Hungary with as much as a light breeze accompanying the riders.
The sun is beaming down, the riders are ready to set off!
The riders waste no time, Misbah from Sauber launches the first attack. A bit behind him we see Van der Ploeg, Paulus and Lafay trying to get away from the pack.
Battistella tried to make it two rider up the road for Nordica, but the peloton were not having it.
Undeterred the young Italian goes again and gets a small gap. Will the peloton let him go? He's 1'30'' behind the front four riders, so he has quite a ways to go.
It wasn't to be for Battistella, Nordica will have to settle with one man in the breakaway. Speaking of the breakaway, they are now on the small hill of the first shorter circuit, which they will traverse four times. They have a lead of 2'20'' over the peloton.
Back in the peloton it's Strava, Los Pollos and Guave's doing most of the early work. Glanbia, BNZ and Centovalli have also been contributing a little bit. The gap has grown to nearly 5 minutes, but there is still more than 170 km left.
The breakaway has crested the small hill for the 4th time as they ride towards the bigger circuit now. The gap has fallen slightly and is at 4'35'' at the moment. 157 km to go.
The riders are now on the bigger circuit, on the part where the road rises up just a bit for a couple of kilometres. They will negotiate this longer circuit five times. Not much has changed at the front of the peloton, the same teams remain interested in controlling the pace. A lot of the sprinters can been seen just behind them. The gap has fallen further and is now at 3'14'' with 124 km to go.
Fast forward a bit and we are on the circuit for the 3rd time now. Barbin has taken the front of the peloton now and the gap is below 2 minutes with 66 km left.
We rejoin the breakaway now. It's been a long day in the saddle, they're on the penultimate lap of the circuit. With the gap hovering just around a minute Paulus has decided to strike out on his own. Van der Ploeg is struggling to keep the pace. 38 km to the finish.
The riders are on the final lap of the circuit and the peloton are working hard to get this catch done. The gap is just 22'', with 26 km still to the finish, a bit too soon for sprint preparations perhaps?
Misbah is the final escapee caught with 22 km to go. A few more kilometres of flat before the rise up, and short downhill and then another 10 or so kilometres of flat to the finish. Glanbia controlling things at the moment for Bennett.
The pace continues to increase and despite there being little to no wind, 13 riders got blown off the back. 4 Philips riders including their sprinter Van der Sanden. Mezgec who was surely planned as a leadout man by Trans and a total of 5 riders from Bralirwa!
Heading into the uphill section we see Guave's have the numbers up the front Coutintho being well protected. BNZ also well represented with Wippert in a good position near the front. 14 km to go.
Guave's and BNZ have controlled this beautifully. We are over the top and both teams still have numbers at the front. Altanzul is working up front for Wippert, while Guave's still have a full battalion for Coutintho. 11 km to go.
Both Guave's and Katrasnik really put the hammer down over the top and on the descent, so we now have a group of 36 riders with a 49'' gap to the rest of the peloton. The only notable name missing is Te Brake, but Gjensidige look like they have their eggs in Katrasnik's basket.
Guave's have shut down Katrasnik, but as they do a counter attack follows! It's Quispe and Ignatiev. Guave's can't cover this one and they have opened up a small gap!
Others have sensed that's it's time to go. Mundle now on the attack, followed by Kangangi. Roux and Naesen have the same idea and try to latch on. The riders behind can't seem to respond!
Nobody can organise a chase, in fact it looks like Pibernik is leading out his sprinter Salleh! Don't they know they have Ignatiev up the road?! Or perhaps this is the best way for Trans to double their result? The gap is at 37'' with 2.7 km to go.
The 6 joined together up front, but not for long. Ignatiev has attacked now and it looks like Roux and Mundle can't follow!
Not just Mundle and Roux, Quispe and Kangangi have also been dropped! Only Naesen can follow as they head under the flamme rouge.
Naesen plays it perfectly coming from behind Ignatiev out of the corner. Kangangi looks like he has the better of Quispe. 200 m left.
Naesen takes the win by a couple of bike lengths! Gutsy ride by Ignatiev, but he'll have to settle for 2nd place.
Kangangi sprints for 3rd as Quispe rolls over in 4th. Let's look at the fight for 5th. Mundle has been swallowed up and it's the angry sprinters fighting it out.
Kragh Andersen wins the sprint for 5th in front of Wippert. Bennett comes in 7th ahead of Coutintho. This has to be a disappointing day for Guave's. They looked well in control for a while, but in the end the attacks were too much and they didn't receive much help either. Salleh makes it two riders in the top 10 for Trans Cycling Team, excellent result for them. And Roux manages to just hold on for the final spot in the top 10.
