It’s our second day on the Baltic coast. It’s also the day we visit Russia in the grandiose city of Saint Petersburg for a 162km ride.
Numerous breakaway attempts set off from the get-go. By the time we start the broadcast the peloton has settled for a 3-men escapade:
Kuznetsov
Ostergaard
Baugnies
They find a gap of around 1min.
Which soars around that mark for the first third of the race.
Inside the last 100km we have another attacker.
It’s Tizza
He quickly find himself in the company of the earlier escapees. In the meantime
Okbmariam also attacks the pack.
It’s a relentless pace from the Italian though as he leaves everyone behind already with 87km to the line. Is he looking to go all the way by himself?
The rest of the break gets caught 10km later, while the Italian manages to keep a 30’’ gap to the last 50km
More attacks emerge from behind as Chokri and Oss try to get up to him.
They succeed in doing so, but Tizza’s legs are no good anymore. These two lead the race as we approach the final 30km.
It doesn’t work out for them either though. The peloton’s authoritative behaviour condemns this effort as well and devours this attempt with 29km to the line.
Andorra is not done yet though. First Machado and then, more successfully, Eeckhout try to find a gap between themselves and the pack.
It never gets any credibility though. Breen brings the Belgian back with 22km to the line.
Bakkafrost continues to drive the bunch to the inevitable mass sprint.
5km to the line. Preparations start to take place.
With 3.5km to go the situation gets clearer
Guarnieri is well protected by two men at the top left. Manninen, Guerao and Guarnieir follow. Then comes Berg’s powerful leadout train.
Cav is to the right of Swift, while Adastra’s men are in his rear.
The Podium Ambition massif comes to their right with Ewan at the front of yellow jersey Altur. Lo Cicero, Vesely and Avelino are in this zone too, while Saber and Itami are 2-3 places behind.
There’s also Gaviria up ahead trying to find Biermans’ slipstream, while Rowe sits comfortably in Schomber’s wheel
3km to go
Bakkafrost drives all the way back to the right-hand side. Everyone seems to be jostling for position behind them. Lierse seems to have found a good setup with this switch, with Gaviria (the 2nd man) finding his mate’s wheel.
Disaster though for Berg as Swift gets blocked by Perera and the pink rangers of Podium Ambition. Are they going to go for Silvestre now?
2km to go
Well, maybe not. The Brit surges back to the front closing in on his team mates brilliantly. We’re facing a false flat section with gentle 2-3% inclinations.
On the right hand side, Lierse takes over from Bakkafrost with Biermans leading Gaviria. Sarreau digs deep to keep Breen and Guarnieri close to the front. Guardini, Vesely, Cavendish, Avelino and Guerao are all up there too.
Then, Domene leading Ewan with Lo Cicero, Saber Itami close by. Kristoff is struggling to find his space, while Rowe also lost a lot of ground.
2.3km to the line
Oh but it’s like climbing a mountain for some riders. Podium Ambition gets completely cut off from the front as Domene doesn’t seem to have the legs and Ewan has run into Reckweg who comes close to a standstill. Lo Cicero, Kristoff, Saber and Rowe are all back there as well.
Itami senses danger and courageously bursts to try and keep up with the front.
Flamme rouge in sight!
After all their troubles Berg find themselves in perfect position with Silvestre driving Swift in pole position.
Guarnieri is their most direct challenger as Gaviria didn’t want or couldn’t hold his position at this point and loses some ground.
600m
Guarnieri takes the lead as Swift lingers on Silvestre’s wheel.
Guardini leads the rest of the field and quickly gains ground to the front.
400m
Swift completey bonks now as he can’t leave his mate’s wheel. Too much energy spent trying to recover position earlier it seems. Guarnieri also fades rather awfully as Guardini also can’t hold his speed.
Vesely is now at the front but Cavendish, Gaviria and Manninen are challenging him.
200m
It’s the Finn who finds the lead. Cavendish is going strong too.
Itami is going pretty fast as well and goes past Gaviria.
But it’s not going to be enough to stop Manninen to take a superb win! Guerao with a late acceleration beats Cavendish to take 2nd.
Itami holds off Gaviria for 4th, while Avelino, Vesely, Guardini, Guarnieri and Silvestre close the top10 in that order. Swift is the first outside that group. His dramatic fade actually helps the rest of the pack get within reach of the front men avoiding what could have been a very costly time gap.
Well, this means Mark Cavendish is now our new yellow jersey. Manninen will definitely enjoy his chances on home soil though and should be a man to look out for. See you then!
