Baltic Chain Tour - Stage 2
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/prof2.jpg

It’s our second day on the Baltic coast. It’s also the day we visit Russia in the grandiose city of Saint Petersburg for a 162km ride.

Numerous breakaway attempts set off from the get-go. By the time we start the broadcast the peloton has settled for a 3-men escapade:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Ostergaard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Baugnies

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/1.jpg

They find a gap of around 1min.

Which soars around that mark for the first third of the race.

Inside the last 100km we have another attacker.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/2.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Tizza

He quickly find himself in the company of the earlier escapees. In the meantime
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Okbmariam also attacks the pack.

It’s a relentless pace from the Italian though as he leaves everyone behind already with 87km to the line. Is he looking to go all the way by himself?

The rest of the break gets caught 10km later, while the Italian manages to keep a 30’’ gap to the last 50km
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/3.jpg

More attacks emerge from behind as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Chokri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Oss try to get up to him.

They succeed in doing so, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Tizza’s legs are no good anymore. These two lead the race as we approach the final 30km.

It doesn’t work out for them either though. The peloton’s authoritative behaviour condemns this effort as well and devours this attempt with 29km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Andorra is not done yet though. First Machado and then, more successfully, Eeckhout try to find a gap between themselves and the pack.

It never gets any credibility though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Breen brings the Belgian back with 22km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Bakkafrost continues to drive the bunch to the inevitable mass sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/6.jpg

5km to the line. Preparations start to take place.

With 3.5km to go the situation gets clearer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/7.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri is well protected by two men at the top left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Manninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guarnieir follow. Then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Berg’s powerful leadout train.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cav is to the right of Swift, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Adastra’s men are in his rear.
The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition massif comes to their right with Ewan at the front of yellow jersey Altur. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino are in this zone too, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami are 2-3 places behind.
There’s also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria up ahead trying to find Biermans’ slipstream, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Rowe sits comfortably in Schomber’s wheel

3km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/8.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Bakkafrost drives all the way back to the right-hand side. Everyone seems to be jostling for position behind them. Lierse seems to have found a good setup with this switch, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria (the 2nd man) finding his mate’s wheel.
Disaster though for Berg as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift gets blocked by Perera and the pink rangers of Podium Ambition. Are they going to go for Silvestre now?

2km to go

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/9.jpg

Well, maybe not. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Brit surges back to the front closing in on his team mates brilliantly. We’re facing a false flat section with gentle 2-3% inclinations.

On the right hand side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Lierse takes over from Bakkafrost with Biermans leading Gaviria. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Sarreau digs deep to keep Breen and Guarnieri close to the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao are all up there too.
Then, Domene leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Ewan withpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami close by. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kristoff is struggling to find his space, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Rowe also lost a lot of ground.

2.3km to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/10.jpg

Oh but it’s like climbing a mountain for some riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Podium Ambition gets completely cut off from the front as Domene doesn’t seem to have the legs and Ewan has run into Reckweg who comes close to a standstill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Rowe are all back there as well.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami senses danger and courageously bursts to try and keep up with the front.

Flamme rouge in sight!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/11.jpg

After all their troubles pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Berg find themselves in perfect position with Silvestre driving Swift in pole position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri is their most direct challenger as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria didn’t want or couldn’t hold his position at this point and loses some ground.

600m

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri takes the lead as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift lingers on Silvestre’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini leads the rest of the field and quickly gains ground to the front.

400m

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift completey bonks now as he can’t leave his mate’s wheel. Too much energy spent trying to recover position earlier it seems. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri also fades rather awfully as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini also can’t hold his speed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely is now at the front but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Manninen are challenging him.

200m

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/15.jpg

It’s the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Finn who finds the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish is going strong too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami is going pretty fast as well and goes past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria.

But it’s not going to be enough to stop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Manninen to take a superb win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Guerao with a late acceleration beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish to take 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Baltic/S2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Itami holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria for 4th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/map.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre close the top10 in that order. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift is the first outside that group. His dramatic fade actually helps the rest of the pack get within reach of the front men avoiding what could have been a very costly time gap.

Well, this means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Mark Cavendish is now our new yellow jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Manninen will definitely enjoy his chances on home soil though and should be a man to look out for. See you then!
