Tour of Eritrea - Stage 6
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/prof6.jpg

It’s the final day here in Eritrea and what a day we have ahead of us. We finally leave Keren behind taking the twisting roller-coaster 180km ride to Merdene. A total of six cat.3 and one cat. 2 climbs await the riders. That is if we disregard the flurry of hilltops on the profile, which ends precisely atop one of those uphill sections.
Looking at GC absolutely anything can happen! Not only are margins between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and his rivals minimal, but their hilly credentials are also pretty even as well. Let’s get going then.

We have our break constituted at the get go:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Agrotis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Oelerich
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pucioni

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e1.jpg

The KoM classification has been decided a long while ago, but that doesn’t stop two men from fighting one another repeatedly:

1st KoM
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Oelerich

2nd KoM
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Agrotis

The Iranian seems to be making it clear to everyone how good of a climber he is after being deprived of a sensational win in Asmara. His Norwegian rival is just doing what everyone in his team seems programmed to do at birth.

1st intermediate
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pucioni

The difference peaks at 6’30 in the first third of the race, but it starts to come down rather easily

With 90km left, just 2’00 remain between the two groups.

Here’s another KoM sprint:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e2.jpg

3rd KoM
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Oelerich

You can sense a lot of tension in the pack as we pass these ascents. Some riders have begun to fade at the back. The ones remaining are getting closer to the front.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige is the team pulling at the head of the pack, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Philips helping out

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e3.jpg

The gap sits at 1’15 with still 133 riders in the peloton. Another incline ensues.

4th KoM
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey

The front group starts to lose elements after this climb. First pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Oelerich and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik lose contact

The pack is also getting thinner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e4.jpg

We traverse the last intermediate with only 81 men in the peloton 52km to go

2nd intermediate
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pucioni
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey

The whole top20 comfortably sits behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Quevedo’s pace. The gap still at 1’20 to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e5.jpg

5th KoM
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Kodhayari
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli

Another KoM passes by with no attacks in the pack. The tension grows ever stronger within the GC candidates, unlike the gap to the front which sits quite stedily at 1’20.

We reach the last 30km of the stage, with the same status quo. This time it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Eg dictating the pace in the peloton. The last KoM prime before the finish is just up ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e6.jpg

There are attacks.

But only at the front as the escapees fight for this last bit of… air time, perhaps?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e7.jpg

6th KoM
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Agrotis
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Kodhayari

Behind, we are yet to see anyone make a bid for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse’s lead.

23km to the line. The gap grows to 1’50. Are we going to see the breakaway taking it?

Perhaps, but not with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pucioni though as he gets caught with 12km to the line

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e8.jpg

You can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg at the front. They have reduced the difference quite well to just 50’’ to the front.

But why? Wouldn’t they prefer to leave the bonifications for the escapees? Who knows... That reminds me of another question:

Omg could anyone please do something?

Sorry about that, let’s move on.

We crest the final little top before the finish with just 6km to go and yet no freaking moves to speak of.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Caruso takes this 86 men group to the final ascent with a 56’’ deficit to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey attacks in the descent trying to create a gap before the final 3km climb

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e10.jpg

He gets one, even if marginal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour drive the approach to the line as they pass the early 4% slopes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro is their second man. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez are all there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e11.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png yellow jersey is a bit behind with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny glued to his wheel!

1.5km to the top!

The escapees are losing ground very fast. They find their way ahead of the pack for now but the incline has raised to 8-9% torturing their legs as they drag themselves up this climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Jang continues to drive the main group towards the breakaway and finally makes contact precisely below the flamme rouge!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e13.jpg

This means bonus seconds are up for grabs (20’’ – 12’’ – 8’’), with everyone in the top 5 within reach of the hot seat!

Speaking of the leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse seems to be having a bad day, since he continues to sit at the back of the first 20 or so riders! Chamorro sits in prime position with Pinot at his right and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner to the left, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen with 2 team mates. Also there are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro (oblivious to his leader), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Schultz on the left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato in the center. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez being brought up by Petrovski

Last kilometer!

The early escapees are overtaken as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Jang peels off. There’s a 3-way battle in the right with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro! The Colombian can smell the GC from here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e14.jpg

Also in contention is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg with 4 men! Cort Nielsen is the one on the right, while Hoelgaard – the one on the left – has crawled from behind Marquez to a top spot. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Schultz on the left going faster than anyone though. Everyone else jammed on the road. Also note pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny being shepherded up by Chhetri as they decide to ditch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse’s wheel

500m

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot rides all the way to the left hand side as the breakaway isn’t occupying that part anymore. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner takes the lead from him, but both the French and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro still very well positioned to take this.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga itching to get a bit of space and fire their final kick at GC glory. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath comes next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss are too far down the group to do anything at this point.

300m

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot overtakes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner, as the Austrian starts fading, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro is stronger on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg is attacking on both sides with Cort Nielsen on the right and Hoelgaard on the left. Schultz is losing ground as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga find some space now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e16.jpg

Can the Rwandan take it? He just needs 3rd place.

100m

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro is coming up fast on the other side still, it’s going to be between these two…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e17.jpg

And it’s the Norwegian who takes it! Impressive final climb for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard who was seen working for parts of the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e18.jpg

But the GC battle needs an answer, who comes after him?

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro, who beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Seibeb.

But wait, are there gaps?

It seems…

…no there aren’t.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse finishes 21st inside this group with his legs pretty much defunct.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S6/e19.jpg

Is he also going to be defunct when he gets to the team bus?

The answer is no. By the slightest of margins he takes the triumph! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro needed just one tiny little second more to overcome the north-american, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga also finished just one position below what he needed to dethrone the yellow jersey.

Behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny change places as do pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen. The rest of the top 10 remains the same
