Today’s a day for the sprinters. Kemboi might not be the biggest favourite to win the stage, but he’s definitely one of the most dangerous outsiders. Manninen, Te Brake and Scully are the only sprinters within twenty seconds of the Kenyan. Only two times will the riders be able to gather KoM-points in this Tour of Uppsala, and one of those two times is today. The rider winning the KoM-sprint immediately has a big chance of winning the classification at the end of the Tour.
We’re going from Aars to Aars today (never thought I would say that, but there it is), so the riders start a couple of meters further from where they will finish in 175 km. Big roads here in Sweden, which should be a positive thing for lead-outs.
Looks like the dress code for today’s breakaway party was white and blue. Knotten, Hänninen and Bissegger looking for glory. The Swiss is the best-placed in the GC at 21”, with Hänninen just 2” behind. Knotten was the slowest of those three yesterday, as he has lost 34” against Kemboi.
Interesting. Project: Africa doesn’t have a sprinter in Sweden, but take the lead in the peloton.
Bissegger wins the first intermediate sprint and comes 6” closer in the GC, Knotten can’t follow the other two. Project: Africa still setting the pace and not letting the gap increase over a minute.
Puncture for Kiflay, 39th in the GC at 16”. His team doesn’t care and now leads the peloton with four riders! They catch Knotten with 125 km to go.
Strange things are happening today! No intermediate sprint or KoM nearby, still 120 km to go and Hänninen simply leaves Bissegger behind! What is the rider from Valio hoping to achieve with this move? Bissegger quickly gets caught by the peloton as well.
Another puncture in the peloton! Mohs has to wait a long time for a new tyre and gets overtaken by Kiflay.
Some interesting tactics by Project: Africa today. Their best sprinter Haddi attacks as they come close to Hänninen and gets the company of Katrasnik. Hänninen immediately gets left behind. Two leaders, 115 km to go!
The two get a minute over the peloton, which sees Mohs and Kiflay come back. Centovalli – Fiat then decides they should be at the front of the race again, and sends the duo Merino Criado – Mundle after them! Also some interesting tactics here, as Merino Criado should be their second best sprinter.
They do so quickly. Four leaders with 100 km to go, having a lead of 2’30” over the peloton.
With 70 km to go, Haddi wins the second and last intermediate sprint of the day ahead of Katrasnik and Mundle. Merino Criado can’t follow them anymore and gets left behind!
Only 30 km left when we find the sprint for the KoM. The breakaway only just manages to hold off the peloton, and it’s Mundle taking the five points! Nych catches the three leaders only a km later.
Still 25 km to go, but some riders, like Kamberaj are going loco. They maintain a high speed, sometimes up to 50 km/h. There is definitely some wind, are some teams trying to scatter the peloton in different pieces?
Some riders have been dropped! The riders who were in the last breakaway of four are no longer in the peloton, but the favourites are holding on. 10 km to go and it’s the pink armada of Podium Ambition asserting their dominance now, the half-pinks of Mapei also trying to come forward.
5 km left and still Podium Ambition and Mapei at the front of the peloton!
As they enter the last 3 km, the pink guys go to the other side of the road! Lutsyshyn following Ewan there there. Mapei on the left side of the road, but Guardini already in second position, which is definitely too soon! Manninen in the wheel of the Italian, Avelino in the middle without a lead-out.
The peloton seems to have more faith in the Podium Ambition lead-out! 2.5 km to go and Avelino, Guerao and Ciolek now behind Lutsyshyn and the pink train.
And it will be between those riders for the win, as they already have a gap over the rest of the peloton, including the other sprinters and yellow jersey Kemboi! 2 km to go and Guardini and Manninen now crossed the road to join the only lead-out left, the one from Podium Ambition!
Oh no! They were doing so well but then Nelson got stuck when trying to overtake teammate Aberasturi! Favilli managed to come back on the left side and launching leader Guardini, who still has more than a km to go! Ewan acted quickly and is trying to follow him, with Manninen doing so as well!
It’s way too far for the Italian. Ewan overtakes him while entering the last 500 metres, he has Manninen and Lutsyshyn behind him! If he manages to grab the win, Manninen would also be the new leader in the GC!
The man’s on fire! He takes the lead with 300 metres to go!
Lutsyshyn gets blown away and loses more and more space on the Finn, 150 metres to go for Manninen!
He doesn’t slow down anymore and takes the stage as well as the GC! The other podium places go to Lutsyshyn and Ewan.
Guardini managed to remain in fourth position ahead of Avelino, Ciolek and Guerao.
Itami, Willwohl and Aberasturi fill the remaining top-10 spots, with Kemboi finishing in 11th place.
