Tour of Eritrea - Stage 4
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/prof4.jpg

Last stage left us all expecting more from the GC candidates, given we have no more real mountains on the route. Fortunately though there are a number of elevations on our way back to Keren. Four category 2 climbs nonetheless, so it could well prove to be fertile ground for aggressive riding. As a reminder we saw the peloton reduced to just 50 riders in these smaller climbs so yeah we should be in for some carnage.

There is a lot of interest in today’s brekaway

We reach the first intermediate prime with a huge 27-rider front group
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Miller
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli, Pucioni, Nibali, Zaini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Avetysian, Zordan, Maesen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Coronel, Petrovski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov, Ziesler, Van Poucke, Eiking, Mehr-Wenige

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e1.jpg

Some great puncheurs in here. Actually, a couple of the best in the race.

Unexplicably though, there is no Eddie Stobart man there. What has become of this world?

1st intermediate
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Avetisyan
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Coronel
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov

Their advantage maxes out at just 2’40 as soon enough a coalition emerges in the pack with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Carrefour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project Afrika start bringing it down. All these many guys up front are getting in the way of the GC battle it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e2.jpg

2nd intermediate
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cote

We reach the foot of the first climb with a gap of 1’52 between the groups.

The first ascent is only 5km long but it is enough to eliminate a number of escapees who were too optimistic to be here.

1st KoM prime
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali

Only 19 riders survive this first uphill engagement up front. (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png BNZ, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cote, Van der Ploeg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Coronel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Siddikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Agrotis and Batistella have been dropped)

105 men in the pack. The gap stays stable at 1’40 with 54km to the line.

Climb no.2 is starting

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e3.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Reguigi drive the peloton, which sees its numbers dwindle to less than 90 riders.

The front group continues to lose elements as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Maccagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Poucke all get caught in this round of elimination.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini again attacks near the top.

This time it is a much more serious acceleration which sees only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige follow him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking proves to be the strongest of this lot, leaving first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski, then the other two behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e4.jpg

Despite shadowing the break for most of this second climb, the peloton crosses this top 2’30 after the front with a lot of riders in between the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project: Africa-led group and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking.

Further behind the first victims of this stage emerge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli who finished so strongly yesterday loses Manfredi and Pernsteiner already. Fortunately for them, Saggiorato is still going strong with the rest of the GC contenders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e5.jpg

Only 56 riders remain in the pack, 40km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking gets the company of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png McConvey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige as they hit the penultimate climb with 1’26 to the pack. Every other former escapee has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali attacks in 9,5% ramps of this ascent, leaving only the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige duo on his wheel.

But he soon empties his tank leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking in prime position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e7.jpg

These two manage to extend their lead during the descent, with 44’ to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali who has 1’44 to the 45-men peloton. 23km to go.

The last climb has only 6,5km of extension, we need something from the GC contenders, otherwise this is going to be a walk in the park for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath. At the moment it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project Africa leading the peloton, should we expect something from them today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e8.jpg

Incredibly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Nibali manages to rejoin his former companions midway through this last uphill obstacle. What a valiant recovery from the Italian legend!

1’07 behind them yesterday’s game of cat and mouse repeats itself, with no team daring anything decisive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e9.jpg

With 2km to the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking again fires up an acceleration, quickly gaining a small advantage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro also attacks in the pack.

The gaps are disappearing though and even though the Colombian quickly catches the chasers, the pack is fast on their heels

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro hits the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Eiking being the only able to follow his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e10.jpg

Not for long though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro takes this KoM and quickly tucks in for the descent

Or so he thought. Unfortunately for him there’s still some more uphill left to do, which leaves space for his compatriot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma, to launch an attack.

He takes with him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e11.jpg

Things are heating up now! The main group desintegrates like a domino cascade!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath is right on their heels as do a number of other candidates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/times.jpg

Notable absentees are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratiy. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Brandt is farther away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma fails to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro and his group is caught in the meantime by the yellow jersey’s who has itself fractured. 12 riders have made the cut:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamante, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnz.png Schultz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez and the worst descender of them all: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e12.jpg

More riders join the back of the group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny is digging hard to get a hold of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro

This creates a gap with the yellow jersey on the wrong side of it, as we’re about to enter the last 5km and the final flat stretch to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny is accompanied by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath takes chasing duties desperately into his own hands. The last climb has robbed him of team mates, which could prove drastic for him. His GC lead to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse is just a tiny 26’’, so any gap coupled with bonus seconds could strip him of the yellow jersey. 3km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro ignited this whole frenzy, but he’s got nothing more on his legs and gets caught by Warbasse’s group with 1.5 km to the line. He would be the best sprinter of the group if he can still save something.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny, always the instigator, again takes the initiative and fires up the sprint below the flamme rouge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato is the lead chaser behind them as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath’s desperation seems to have left him empty too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma storms forward to take the lead from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss move up to challenge him...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro tries a late acceleration...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e17.jpg

But it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Ndayisenga who takes the win. Fantastic ride from the Rwandan. Who did well to time his final dash, beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Kuss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Chamorro.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma will be sad to know he missed out on bonus seconds despite his strong ride, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Cort Nielsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny finish in that order.

Behind them panic seems to have set in, it’s every man for himself instead of a working group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Barbin is the one bringing these guys home with a sensational final sprint cuting the deficit to just 35’’

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e19.jpg

But wait it’s not over just yet. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath has blown up! He loses contact with this group inside the final kilometer and his credited the time of the next group +1’03

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S4/e20.jpg

Disastrous news for the german who finishes with the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Fabbro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Brandt.

Now the big news everyone is itching to know: who’s the new race leader?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Lawrence Warbasse is the answer! Despite missing out on bonuses he conserves a 1’’ gap to today’s stage victor, while the rest of the group is all within 21’’. Not only that but the top15 is all under a minute’s difference. All is yet to be decided here in Eritrea. What a final day we’re going to have.
