Tour of Eritrea - Stage 3
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/prof3.jpg

Here we go guys. It’s the queen stage of the race, 185km with the mountain-top finish in Asmara. The GC is wide-open and today should see the climbers present fight it out amongst themselves.

Our first attackers come in a pack of 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Monaco
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Maesen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Resell
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McNulty

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e1.jpg

It would be weird to have just one pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Eddie Stobbart man up the road, but fortunately for the Universe, normality is resumed when 4 more men reach the front group:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Lovik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Pavlic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari

The final climb gives 16 points to its winner so the preliminary KoM sprints are going to be decisive. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer takes the first one of those ahead of his main rival pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e2.jpg

He then goes on to take the 2nd…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e3.jpg

The third…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e4.jpg

And the fourth, to complete an astonishing total of 8 consecutive KoM tops in 2 days, which should be some sort of Man-Game record.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e5.jpg

This puts him at 32 points, with a pretty solid grip on that jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas gets tired of this humiliation and robs his fellow compatriot of the 1st place in the sole intermediate sprint of the day.

It’s time we look at the rest of the race though as there have been significant developments behind.

These earlier hills have given the best teams the opportunity to make a gradual selection through these slopes, leaving a lot of grupettos scattered chasing the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Battaglin is the only climber not present in the main group, having been dropped in the last descent. He has his whole team around but just doesn’t seem to have the legs as his group trails by more than 3min already

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e6.jpg

But let’s look at the group of favourites, before the race takes us to the final ascent of the day. It’s a 50-men group with all GC candidates in there. They trail by 1’10 to the remainng escapees.

Which consist of only 4 riders: (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Pavlic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski) , as the rest got dropped throughout the earlier hills.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e7.jpg

There are only 50km to go but they are all uphill from now on. Curiously though, the KoM leader is in theory the worst climber of the front men.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project Afrika lead the chase thinning the group to 34 riders, as we hit the first slopes of the mountain.

Some valuable domestiques get left behind like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoem, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Silva or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Augustyn and will not be able to help their leaders already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini is the first leader to lose ground on the bottom left of the screen!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e8.jpg

This climb is a brute in its length, but it never provides the sort of slope that invites a decisive acceleration. Thus the group drags itself up the next 10km without any serious moves.

The early breakaway in fact manages to colaborate well and keep a 1 min distance yet. 40km to the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Signorini is 2min behind already thouhg

This status quo is kept as we reach the 30km to go mark.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e10.jpg

…the 20km to go mark…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e11.jpg

…and the 10km to go mark

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e12.jpg

It’s only inside the unpaved part of the climb that we have news to report, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari attacking his former companions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e13.jpg

The main group finally gets thinner, but only minor lieutenants get dropped by now, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Thiery or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard.

We’re tackling 11% ramps now and the Iranian is gaining time, not only on his former companions but also to the pack, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse leads. 1’30 is the difference

And still no attacks with 8 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari’s lead has balooned to 2’45!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e14.jpg

Someone finally decides to do something and it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli who sends Pernsteiner to the front as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer is finally caught and quickly engulfed to the back of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e15.jpg

With 5km left there are still 27 riders in this group. Seven of which are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar men. Just look at that green blob!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Chhetri is the next rider of note to lose ground in this part.

Entering the final 3km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner has reduced the gap massively to 1’20 and is about to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Petrovski now

The Macedonian champion is finally caught with 2km to the top, as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Pavlic, which completes the whole Europcar team in this group. Insane!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath looks very fresh as he is riding just next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Pernsteiner. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli leaders are riding behind them while the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar wall separates them from the rest of the leaders sitting at the back of the group.

The heroics of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari will not award him the victory though as the Iranian is reached with 1.5km to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e17.jpg

The group is down to 23 riders, with all the remaining big names still around and kicking.

We finally get to see some action just before the final kilometer banner. It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato on his wheel!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e18.jpg

You might think it’s too late to create any diferences but this final kilometer is still very steep. The acceleration starts breaking the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar core. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny immeaditely try to react behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato. On the other hand pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Marquez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Ratyi and the rest are too far back to do anything meaningful.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e19.jpg

The rope finally breaks behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e20.jpg

And it’s enough for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath to take the win. A meritable compensation for the only leader with enough guts and power on his legs to distance the others!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/spr.png Frankiny 14’’ later

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e22.jpg

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Henao takes fifth with a 27’’ deficit to the winner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S3/e23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Pinot finishes 6th in yet another disappointing performance for Project Afrika who seemed to be completely focused in him in this race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Manfredi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamante are the only riders of note to lose ground on this final stretch of the mountain.

This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Keinath is our new leader. These small gaps keep the race wide open for the coming stages, which should be interesting. The german is one of the best puncheurs among the riders involved in the GC fight so it’s going to be hard to dislodge him from this seat now.
The green and polka dot jersey stay where they are while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg storms the U25 competition with Fabbro taking the white jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli are the leaders of the team classification in spite of Europcar’s antics.
