Tour of Eritrea - Stage 2
Gustavovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/prof2.jpg

Hello and welcome again to Eritrea, for our second stage of the Tour of Eritrea.

It’s another flat affair, this time a 10 laps circuit stage around the town of Massara. We have, however, a number of intermediate primes to deal before the expected mass sprint which should make things fun during this 140km ride.

And right from the start we have attacks. Take a guess at who’s the instigator.

That’s right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Eddie Stobbart. As we’ve already figured, KoM is their thing and as such they waste no time in sending their man up the road to conquer the first points

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e1.jpg

This time they send pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer who takes the first cat. 4 top ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige for 5 and 3 points respectively.

This duo will eventually be joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Pushpakumara

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e2.jpg

Again a powerful group of puncheurs who could make things interesting.

Sprint no. 1
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Zaini
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg
Their gap is let go to the 3min mark, but doesn’t grow larger than that.

The stage unfolds in a calm manner with every KoM top being disputed among the escapees in close-fought sprints but the outcome is always the same: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer 1st

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e3.jpg

Which means his team will get to keep the polka dot jersey for another day.

After the penultimate prime though, they lose pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Pashpakumara who gives in and waits for the pack to catch him.

50km to go, 4 escapees, with a 2’20 gap

With the gap coming down, the breakaway starts to attack each other. First it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Van der Ploeg, whose attempt doesn't stick. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Mehr-Wenige

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e4.jpg

Each time they are brought back by a diligent pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer.

Their gap continues to come down as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa chase. As we aproach the 20km banner it's just over 1 min.

But eventful news come from the pack as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Van Heerden is losing contact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e5.jpg

The South African is still not well from his previous exploits it seems!

We hit that little hill one last time when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer uses the opportunity to ditch his previous companions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e6.jpg

He sweeps the last KoM prime to strengthen the hold on that polka dot shirt. The pack sets off in his pursuit catching the rest of the early escapees.

But the final catch his made with 7km to the line. No luck for the breakaway today.

Mass sprint it is then:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen seems to be feeling better as he can be seen at the front, but we can see him talking to the radio. Perhaps he is too alone?

Sprint preparations start with 5km to go but we only get a good shot of the front of the pack with 3km to the line:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e7.jpg

It’s a bit confusing but if you follow the colours you can get the gist of it:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli for Reinhardt at the top right.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa for Selig just behind them.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen just to their left
Then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave with 3 riders around Coutinho.
On the top left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec leads Salleh. Then there’s a train of sorts with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/car.png Lavoine.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afr.png Project: Afrika is not interested in stage results and as Van Heerden trails the pack by 2 min, Main brings Pinot to the company of the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli continue to force the pace with their last leadout as they bring the pack closer to the last 2km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e8.jpg

It could be too early to press such a charge but they manage to get the yellow jersey in trouble. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho’s leadout is in shambles!

1.5km to the line and that acceleration actually creates a sizeable gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e9.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Cisse peals off and leaves Reinhardt at the front. Almost every sprinter is alone here, with only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker for Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec for Salleh (with these two having lost some speed now and appearing at the back of the group)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt fires off below the flamme rouge and immediately puts everyone on the ropes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev is the closest contender, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec on the right hand side of the road and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker on the left seem to be going too hard for their respective leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt eventually fades with 700m to the line, leaving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Redecker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/phi.png Boev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Mezgec at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e11.jpg

But everyone else is closing in on them

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Salleh finally storm the front, but it’s actually pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough on the left hand side who’s the fastest at the moment

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e12.jpg

The American pushes on in the last 200m with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger is also on his final burst with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen now delivering his final acceleration as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e13.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough proves to be too much for everyone to handle and awards McCormick a beautiful win in sunny Masmara!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen manages to outsprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Colbrelli at the very last moment to take 2nd ahead of the Italian.

All these accelerations have created a gap has we’ve witnessed earlier, which grows to some impressive 58’’ as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho brings the pack home to rest

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2HC/Eritrea/S2/e15.jpg

Only sprinters in the front group, so it’s unlikely that this has any Effect on the final overall.

With this pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough takes the yellow jersey which I suppose he’s sure to lose tomorrow. He also takes the green which should be a more interesting classification for him to follow, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Meyer now is the KoM leader ahead of his two mates, Umerbekov and Hugentobler.

Tune in for tomorrow and the queen stage of this race!
