Ronde van Nederland - Stage 1
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/profile.jpg

Stage one provides an opportunity to both sprinters and puncheurs. While the stage around Nuth and Schimmert is rated as flat, we cross many hills in Limburg to give the puncheurs some chance. It currently rains, and it is expected to stay that way until the finish, which is also slightly uphill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/01.jpg

Seven riders break away at the start:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Fenn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Olei
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Arslanov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Nielsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Rickaert

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/02.jpg

Five more rider want to join, with a mountain sprint in a few kilometer as ultimate goal:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Abreu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Freuler

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/03.jpg

The six points at the Bemelerberg are taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Nielsen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt with four and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Fenn two. The lead over the chasing five is 40 seconds, but they are almost caught by the peloton suggesting they are not OK with a large group as break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/04.jpg

The peloton even goes as far as bringing back the front group as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Rickaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Arslanov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Smit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Olei disagree and attack again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/05.jpg

Four more return as well:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png De Gendt
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Nielsen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/06.jpg

The peloton is still unhappy and catches them all again. 40 kilometer into stage and still no definitive breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/07.jpg

Three riders would then ride away and receive clearance:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson

Also the order at the category three Loorberg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita just sneaks past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen at the Groeneweg a few kilometer later. They are tied at the top of the KoM with 10 points, a final sprint near the end of the stage will be decisive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/09.jpg

The following intermediate sprint is quite close, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen wins ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita. Their lead is three minutes with 120 kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/10.jpg

Many teams doing part of the work in the peloton: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Isostar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Puma, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Evonik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bennelong, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png UBS, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png eBuddy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png ISA, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Vesuvio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Indosat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Aegon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Moser. A mix of teams who have either a puncheur or sprint focus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/11.jpg

Camerig is uncategorized but yet difficult enough to drop pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson. 95 kilometer to go, gap down to two minutes. The final categorized climb is the Cauberg in 33 kilometer, but the local laps around Nuth and Schimmert also contain a difficult hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski flexing his rainbow jersey with an attack on the Van Plettenburgweg. He won a stage last year from the breakaway, perhaps Grieg wants to do it again, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen playing a role up front. He and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita lead by 1'30 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson has been caught already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski joined just before the Cauberg and together they beat pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen taking max points and the polka dot jersey of course. The gap has gone back up to 2'30, 60 kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/14.jpg

At the second lap of four laps, the World Champion seems to drop back voluntarily, no way he is more tired than the other two. The peloton has closed in to a minute with the sprinters ready for action, though reconnaissance of the hill in the lap shows it might be suited for an attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/15.jpg

This is that uphill stretch, entering the final kilometer. With two laps to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Andersen drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png eBuddy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Air France and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png ISA with one or more rider taking charge of the peloton, hoping to bring it to a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita fought back but a lap later both are caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Zakarin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink powering up the hill for the last time, but the sprinters cannot be dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Fumeaux punctured and will not make it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/17.jpg

Five kilometer to go and the peloton is led by the eBuddy duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Gerts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Feng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Juarez for ISA. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb trying to find the right leadout.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/18.jpg

Something is going on with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski, as he is dropped from the peloton in company of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Quita, and will finish three minutes down! The World Champion clearly out of form, a bad signal with the cobblestone classics coming up next week.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/19.jpg

Two km, the hill is in sight and the finish is right on top. Current positioning:

Puncheurs like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bakelants also at the front, maybe for an attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest powering up the hill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo behind. A gap behind them to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge leading the pack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen surprisingly far back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/21.jpg

On top of the hill with a dangerously placed barrier, a Dutch battle between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen takes place as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest falls away and is passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu and the surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb struggled towards the end of the hill with the second group unable to make much ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke's advantage on the hill is gone and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen goes past, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu are also still in the mix with a final push. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo are now vulnerable to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Reimer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko on the next row.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/23.jpg

A photo finish between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb. We have to wait for the official jury verdict. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is certainly third, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Grosu certainly fourth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Nederland/S1/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Demare finishes fifth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Lutsenko. Sprinters might have underestimated the hill and some puncheurs got to the stage top ten and pick up a few bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Kennaugh eleventh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Reimer twelfth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Vanderbiest thirteenth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov fourteenth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen fifteenth. Punchy sprinters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/xr0.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Van Stayen never played a role in the sprint, placing sixteenth and eighteenth. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Nizzolo falling from a promising position to 26th, one place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Howard.

The audio technician simulating crowd noise, as no spectators were allowed due to corona measures, has started a tape of people booing. That can only mean one thing: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png John Degenkolb has won the stage. There is a saying in the Netherlands: "A football match lasts 90 minutes and in the end the Germans win", apparently that is also true for cycling. Nevertheless, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke there are two Dutchmen on the podium. The general and points classification is largely similar to the stage result, but there are time differences amongst the front ten due to F1-style bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Soren Kragh Andersen leads the mountains classification, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Lucas Eriksson leads the youth classification and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio leads the teams classification.
