Stage one provides an opportunity to both sprinters and puncheurs. While the stage around Nuth and Schimmert is rated as flat, we cross many hills in Limburg to give the puncheurs some chance. It currently rains, and it is expected to stay that way until the finish, which is also slightly uphill.
Seven riders break away at the start:
Fenn
Olei
Andersen
Arslanov
De Gendt
Nielsen
Rickaert
Five more rider want to join, with a mountain sprint in a few kilometer as ultimate goal:
Eriksson
Smit
Serrano
Abreu
Freuler
The six points at the Bemelerberg are taken by Nielsen. De Gendt with four and Fenn two. The lead over the chasing five is 40 seconds, but they are almost caught by the peloton suggesting they are not OK with a large group as break.
The peloton even goes as far as bringing back the front group as well. Rickaert, Arslanov, Smit and Olei disagree and attack again.
Four more return as well:
Eriksson
De Gendt
Nielsen
Andersen
The peloton is still unhappy and catches them all again. 40 kilometer into stage and still no definitive breakaway.
Three riders would then ride away and receive clearance:
Andersen
Quita
Eriksson
Also the order at the category three Loorberg.
Quita just sneaks past Andersen at the Groeneweg a few kilometer later. They are tied at the top of the KoM with 10 points, a final sprint near the end of the stage will be decisive.
The following intermediate sprint is quite close, but Andersen wins ahead of Eriksson and Quita. Their lead is three minutes with 120 kilometer to go.
Many teams doing part of the work in the peloton: Isostar, Puma, Evonik, Bennelong, UBS, eBuddy, ISA, Vesuvio, Indosat, Aegon and Moser. A mix of teams who have either a puncheur or sprint focus.
Camerig is uncategorized but yet difficult enough to drop Eriksson. 95 kilometer to go, gap down to two minutes. The final categorized climb is the Cauberg in 33 kilometer, but the local laps around Nuth and Schimmert also contain a difficult hill.
Wisniowski flexing his rainbow jersey with an attack on the Van Plettenburgweg. He won a stage last year from the breakaway, perhaps Grieg wants to do it again, with Andersen playing a role up front. He and Quita lead by 1'30 as Eriksson has been caught already.
Wisniowski joined just before the Cauberg and together they beat Quita, Andersen taking max points and the polka dot jersey of course. The gap has gone back up to 2'30, 60 kilometer to go.
At the second lap of four laps, the World Champion seems to drop back voluntarily, no way he is more tired than the other two. The peloton has closed in to a minute with the sprinters ready for action, though reconnaissance of the hill in the lap shows it might be suited for an attack.
This is that uphill stretch, entering the final kilometer. With two laps to go, Andersen drops Quita. eBuddy, Air France and ISA with one or more rider taking charge of the peloton, hoping to bring it to a sprint.
Quita fought back but a lap later both are caught. Zakarin and Lammertink powering up the hill for the last time, but the sprinters cannot be dropped. Fumeaux punctured and will not make it back.
Five kilometer to go and the peloton is led by the eBuddy duo of Gerts and Vermeltfoort, followed by Zakarin, Feng and Juarez for ISA. Grosu and Degenkolb trying to find the right leadout.
Something is going on with Wisniowski, as he is dropped from the peloton in company of Quita, and will finish three minutes down! The World Champion clearly out of form, a bad signal with the cobblestone classics coming up next week.
Two km, the hill is in sight and the finish is right on top. Current positioning:
Kreder Vermeltfoort Contreras Grosu Degenkolb Vanderbiest Nizzolo Van der Lijke Ganna Groenewegen Krul Demare Bohli Lammertink Juarez Reimer Stash Hayakawa
Puncheurs like Sagan, Ponzi, McCarthy, Mohoric, De Bie and Bakelants also at the front, maybe for an attack.
Van der Lijke and Vanderbiest powering up the hill. Groenewegen, Grosu, Degenkolb, Hayakawa and Nizzolo behind. A gap behind them to Samolenkov, Kennaugh, Demare and Bobridge leading the pack. Van Stayen surprisingly far back.
On top of the hill with a dangerously placed barrier, a Dutch battle between Van der Lijke and Groenewegen takes place as Vanderbiest falls away and is passed by Grosu and the surprising Hayakawa. Degenkolb struggled towards the end of the hill with the second group unable to make much ground.
Van der Lijke's advantage on the hill is gone and Groenewegen goes past, but Degenkolb and Grosu are also still in the mix with a final push. Vanderbiest, Hayakawa and Nizzolo are now vulnerable to Demare, Samolenkov, Bobridge and Ponzi. Sagan, Reimer, Van Garderen and Lutsenko on the next row.
A photo finish between Groenewegen and Degenkolb. We have to wait for the official jury verdict. Van der Lijke is certainly third, Grosu certainly fourth.
Demare finishes fifth ahead of Bobridge, Hayakawa, Ponzi, Sagan and Lutsenko. Sprinters might have underestimated the hill and some puncheurs got to the stage top ten and pick up a few bonus seconds. Kennaugh eleventh, Reimer twelfth, Vanderbiest thirteenth, Samolenkov fourteenth and Van Garderen fifteenth. Punchy sprinters Houle and Van Stayen never played a role in the sprint, placing sixteenth and eighteenth. Nizzolo falling from a promising position to 26th, one place ahead of Howard.
The audio technician simulating crowd noise, as no spectators were allowed due to corona measures, has started a tape of people booing. That can only mean one thing: John Degenkolb has won the stage. There is a saying in the Netherlands: "A football match lasts 90 minutes and in the end the Germans win", apparently that is also true for cycling. Nevertheless, with Groenewegen and Van der Lijke there are two Dutchmen on the podium. The general and points classification is largely similar to the stage result, but there are time differences amongst the front ten due to F1-style bonus seconds. Soren Kragh Andersen leads the mountains classification, Lucas Eriksson leads the youth classification and EA Vesuvio leads the teams classification.
