Tour of Southland - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0241.jpg

The final stage of the Tour of Southland and while Waeytens only having a tiny GC gap, it likely is enough if all finish in the peloton.
Only the first are getting bonus seconds and with the amount of top sprinters here, they should take those.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/t3a.png Nelson the stage winners so far while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Gaviria got himself blocked 1 1/2 times and has to improve clearly. And obviously couple other sprinters as well trying to get onto the highest step.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Connolly (6pts) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram (5pts) are two of the five breakaway riders and will try to beat Waeytens` 12 points in that ranking.
Both had been active throughout this race and will face a bit more fresh opponents in

First of two KoM sprints and Connolly outsprints Oram for the big points. 11 for him now with both Waeytens and Turgis having an additional point while Oram is new 4th having 8.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0252.jpg

The Blackmount Hill Climb will decide over the KoM ranking! 3km on 5,7km and 412m in height. That`s almost Coronet Peak, though only those two are going for it and all others will "slowly" pass the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0254.jpg

Oram gave it all but the higher it gets the bigger the gap to Connolly, even if it`s just couple of meters.

That results in Connolly up to 17 and Oram joining Waeytens and Turgis on the shared 2nd with 12!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0257.jpg

With 28km to go Lierse, Berg and MOL are the 3 teams chasing hard to catch the break.
Still 1'20 to go though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0259.jpg

20km later though they are all caught and Van Aert is pulling hard for Gaviria. Can the Colombian celebrate his win today, just like he did in the Tour Down Under, on the very last day?

The high pace sees some riders taking it a bit easier behind so that a group of 66 goes around GC riders and sprinters.
Some secondary sprinters are hit again while also Gebrezgabihier, Le Gac, Teklit or Zingle are behind, who weren`t that far off in the late GC top 20-25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0265.jpg

The sprinters slowly take position behind their leadouts but one sprinter on the right here is missing a top position: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Swift is having a few bike length to his two leadouts ahead and another few to the top trains right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0278.jpg

Martinez with a great leadout today! Maksimov right behind him but also pulling Gaviria, Nelson and Manninen with him while Lutsyshyn, Ciolek, Wippert have a small gap behind those.

Right of them in 7th position overall Kupfernagel is accelerating hugely with Tzortzakis having gone left.
Behind first Avelino and then Swift, who has closed the gap now.

Kemboi isolated on the far left side with Van Asbroeck another few wheels behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0286.jpg

This happens if Maksimov decides to not start his sprint once Martinez was done. 1,4km and too early indeed but different to the 3rd stage when several sprinters were looking at each other this time is different as Kupfernagel is doing a monster leadout passing them all. Even that strong, that Swift stuggles to follow or basically the gap of Avelino simply opened as the Portuguese couldn`t follow such acceleration.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0290.jpg

1-2 for Berg with 800m to go and Swift now going towards the left about to pass Kupfernagel.
Might not have been the best idea to move inside as this is giving slipstream to all the others where Maksimov, Gaviria, Nelson, Manninen and Lutsyshyn are first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0293.jpg

Kupfernagel has done his job and is going backwards. 300m to go and Swift is having 2 bike length advantage to the next quartett.

Except for Avelino and unfortunately Vesely as well, this is today the first time that all the top sprinters aren`t blocked and can fight it out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_05_PCM0295.jpg

But the Brit takes his 2nd stage. His sprint and in especially leadout today was by far the strongest even though his positioning was really awful.

Gaviria in 2nd and came very close towards the end. He clearly missed a leadout today as positioning wasn`t ideal for him this tour and today waiting for Maksimov`s train to follow Swift neither didn`t work.

Nelson with another podium in 3rd showing really nice skills here and had a good start to the season taking care of races without Caleb Ewan, Maksimov in 4th and Manninen in 5th.

Seeing all the top GC riders coming over the line in around 15-30th position, this means Waeytens can celebrate. It`s one of his biggest wins in general, but clearly in the last couple years. Surely improved from his Lierse days for whatever reason his underperformance appreared.
