Tour of Southland - Stage 4
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0179.jpg

GC Day! Basically same situation as on day 2. Going pretty flat with smaller bumps only towards Coronet Peak before the peloton is going full speed into the last quick uphill section. Positioning is important as Bluff Hill has shown but also if you struggle with the length, you shouldn`t go all-in too early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar impressively has shown how to do both perfectly and "dominated" on Bluff Hill.
The only riders able to gave him quite a challenge there were pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gcn.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fpc.png Turgis with some others able to hanging behind him but never able to really come any closer.

Others such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Di Maggio couldn`t divide energy properly while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Betancourt or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vvg.png Gautier struggled with the positioning at first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0180.jpg

But as usual, the break of the day! Who is trying his luck on a stage unlikely to win, in especially when only +68s in the GC?
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Haas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Hasnaoui

As expected, this wasn`t really needed as they are caught before the start of the climb. Valio and MOL working right now. Later indeed were strong on the 2nd stage with Waeytens on the podium and Gebrezgabihier as well in the first spots.
Valio has Gautier, who still could be up there with the very best, but also have Kanerva, who looked stronger then the French and is in the Youth Jersey.
Another team not visible right now but having done a lot of work with Brockhoff and Stenersen is Polar. Betancourt clearly in need to improve and show his skills. He was one of the stronger in 2018 in Southland and knows the climb well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0191.jpg

Once coming towards the climb though Campari with 4 riders ahead of Di Maggio and another two a few spots behind as well. He needs to gain time clearly but shouldn`t go too early neither as this didn`t work well for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0192.jpg

646m of height on 3,9km having an average of 5,9%. That`s less than Bluff Hill but on a longer period. The hardest part coming at the start of the 2nd half while the final is rather flat again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0204.jpg

Almost the identical situation as Bluff Hill.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cap.png Di Maggio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar best placed into the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0212.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/min.png Claeys actually a bit further behind, another 2 wheels behind Turgis and clearly not well placed. Neither pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Gebrezgabihier in the first rows today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0214.jpg

Dejavu. While Prevar remains in the lead, Schreurs and Borges coming up, Di Maggio is struggling with the high pace of the others.

The Valio duo, Waeytens, Flügel and a bit later also Dowsett, Betancourt, Turgis all slowly pass the Italian.

Claeys actually the last rider of that group just outside the picture in 17th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0221.jpg

1.3km to go, that`s basically the amount of additional climbing in comparison. And exactly the moment, when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar is passed by Schreurs, Borges, Waeytens and also the Valio duo.

In fact being next to Di Maggio now, who is still up there.

Turgis, Dowsett, Ackermann, Flügel, Betancourt next.

Claeys now with a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0228.jpg

Different to Di Maggio though (at the end of the group) Prevar is able to keep contact.

Waeytens in the lead now having passed Schreurs and Borges while Turgis with his typical late acceleration going past the Valio riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0231.jpg

400m and just 12 riders left with the last being a bit behind already which is Betancourt`s support Galindo.

This also means that Di Maggio has again not been able to stay with the favourites.

Back to the front. Still the same riders with Gautier doing decently as well now.
Prevar trying to avoid a gap really while Kanerva is struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0233.jpg

The big disappointments today clearly must be Claeys and Di Maggio. Apparently a stage with lots of flat and a high speed hill then, is not suited to them a lot as they would prefer it a lot more hilly all day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0235.jpg

200m: One of those top4-5 will take it. For all others it avoid a gap.

Waeytens still in the lead but Turgis being fastest and also Schreurs has come a bit closer again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0237.jpg

But it`s enough for MOL! Waeytens with a fantastic win. It has been a while since he took a uphill win in such field, even more having two strong finishes in one race! This consistency actually moves him ahead of Prevar, who couldn`t take bonuses today.

Turgis in 2nd ahead of Borges, Schreurs and Gautier but also Prevar in 6th was not struggling a lot in the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Southland/mg20_southland_04_PCM0238.jpg

Just like Betancourt, Kanerva, Dowsett, Flügel and Ackermann they got the same time and also form the GC top11 with Turgis in 3rd behind Prevar now.

Di Maggio/Claeys finishing in the next groups and are in the GC top15! Same for Ben Swift actually and Gaviria and still with a chance to climb 1-2 spots for those in the final sprinter stage.
