Back to the sprints, a bit more hills as on day 1 but still a very, very flat stage. Both top favourites Swift and even more Gaviria (impacting Avelino as well) were blocked at one point, so that we didn`t get a sprint by all those against each other.
Nelson was the lucky one to take home the win for Podium Ambition. Will we see them sprinting it out today?
3/3. Oram once more in the break and while he has the KoM jersey, he actually needs more points as he dropped behind Prevar yesterday, who though also has the GC lead.
Connolly
Bagioli
Lindeman
Clarke
Al Murawwi
the others in the group.
Glanbia was strongest though on the two Cat.4. Unfortunately for them though Connoly took the first and Clarke the second KoM sprint which results in both having 6pts now, same as Prevar.
Oram despite trying wasn`t strong enough and didn`t get a single point, still sitting behind them with 5pts.
As seen in the background, the peloton was about to make the catch with 27km to go at this KoM. Popo4ever, Lierse, Berg the main teams chasing behind.
Surprisingly many riders struggle on those short hills and it`s not windy!
Keukeleire, Page, Von Hoff, Mohs all dropped.
4km to go and Berg want to deliver it for Swift today.
First Orken and Destribois and then Kupfernagel putting such a high pace here that most riders struggle to organize their sprint at all. In fact only a handful of sprinters line up behind them with the GC riders trying to keep contact as there is a gap opening behind, which by the look of it doesn`t impact any top GC rider.
Though this high speed unfortunately for Berg also means that Tzortzakis is not able to get into the train as he sits in 7th place only.
The only sprinters in that line are right behind Swift:
Manninen
Gaviria
Kemboi
Maksimov
2,6km and Kupfernagel looks to have done too much too early, Swift obviously knows with all his experience, that he can`t start a sprint from that far out and tries to force others into the lead.
This brings couple more riders back into stage chances and it`s actually Bettiol trying to surprise the waiting sprinters with a strong move forward on the left side. With him Omarsson, who might become a late leadout for Manninen?
If so, then it was an awful leadout. Manninen though still starts his sprint next just under the Flamme Route after easily passing the duo again.
Swift sitting right behind him with Kemboi and Maksimov next.
Gaviria once again has found a way to being blocked from being in the perfect position before.
Other sprinters that haven`t been around earlier are still too far behind such as Avelino or Ciolek in 40th spot only.
Manninen still in the lead but Swift is now starting his attack trying to go past him. Same a bit behind Kemboi and Maksimov.
Gaviria is the only fast sprinter in the group behind GC men in 7th/8th position. Can he also make a late move?
Unlikely. Just 150m to go now and those top4 look sealed. But in what order? Manninen likely neither as Swift has passed him and Kemboi is about to do so.
It is Swift. The veteran still has it taking a big win for Berg. Manninen had enough left to counter Kemboi`s attack while Maksimov comes in 4th ahead of Gaviria, who should have stayed with Swift really, which likely had been 1st or 2nd then.
Turgis, Prevar, Borges next just like most other GC riders.
Except for Swift going into the points lead, not many changes today.
