Ras Tailteann - Stage 1
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/profile.jpg

The first stage is immediately the longest at 212 kilometer. It is also the flattest, with absolutely no challenge for the riders. We expect a breakaway to be formed, then to be caught again and a fairly straightforward sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/01.jpg

The break is hotly contested:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Osorio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Cruz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Fedeli the first wave,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Joseph
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Van Avermaet
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Agostini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Ulloa the second wave.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/02.jpg

There is an intermediate sprint 15k into the stage, so the sprinter teams (basically every team which wasn't present in the break) chase this breakaway hard. The eight are caught six kilometer before the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/03.jpg

However, they caught them too soon as it gave room to another attack:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Groves
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Batmunkh

Teams like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Andorra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa still chasing, but lead is a minute with 2500 meter to go. After this, the chase stopped and they were allowed to go clear definitively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/04.jpg

The four riders in the break duke it out at the sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov wins ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Groves and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Batmunkh the unfortunate one to pick up no points or seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/05.jpg

The maximum lead the peloton is willing to give the quartet is three minutes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Klaris and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Veber had also attempted to attack but that was before the intermediate sprint, when the peloton were still chasing. Teams leading are, in no particual order, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Los Pollos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Nordica, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png McCormick, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Tryg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Sotto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Andorra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli. Basically every team without presence in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/06.jpg

100 kilometer has flown by. The riders where threated to a bit of rain in the countryside but the sun shines again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Batmunkh takes his revenge by winning the second intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov just edging out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok for second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Groves pointless this time. The current gap is two minutes with 80 kilometer to go, 60 to the next sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/07.jpg

No one of the four attacks for the proverbial combativity award and as friends they are caught with 40 kilometer to go. McCormick has now taken control with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Wirtgen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Gunnlaugsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Mostov. Which sprinter will participate in the dress rehearsal in twenty kilometer?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/08.jpg
Apologies for the interface

The answer: no one. The seconds and points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png S. Mugisha, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Okbamariam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Ratto because they happened to lead the peloton. No real preparation of trains yet but surely the field will look different in ten kilometer or so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/09.jpg

Bralirwa continues to lead, now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png El Sabbahi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Awang, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen some of the sprinters already in front positions. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Bralirwa forming bigger trains behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Townsend lays down a fast pace which basically prevented trains from being formed with three kilometer to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Bissegger has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Stocker on his wheel but no sign of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Cisse yet. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Awang is now the front Andorra rider but it's too early to sprint. Many sprinters are also relatively far down the field still, we might be in for a weird one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/11.jpg

With 1500 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Bissegger has done all he can and it is for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Stocker to finish, apparently, with superstar sprinters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Schoonbroodt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Mundle on his wheel. Alongside the boarding, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Townsend comes back to lead out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Awang with the following in line behind him:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Habtom
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Salleh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig

Some sprinters behind the line more spread out, but obviously far back:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Sbaraglipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Stocker stood no chance but with 700 meter a different Centovalli rider leads: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Cisse. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Habtom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Awang are almost alongside him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip, closing in, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde at a few lengths, the big guns still somewhat boxed in against the boarding.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Kip comes alongside to make it four wide, this might go to a photo finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi leads sprint for fifth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Stocker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Martinelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen now finally with some free space on the left, he and some others might make up some ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/14.jpg

It is really close to call but the chicken, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Ismael Kip, looks like he just has the edge! Indeed, timing registers the Dutchman as crossing the line first. Second to fourth might be decided by a coin toss but the transponders say it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Cisse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/and.png Awang, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Habtom in that order. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ssr.png Pelucchi had more speed in the end and came close to making it five-wide, but finishes fifth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C2/Ras/S1/15.jpg

Sixth for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Tewelde, seventh for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Martinelli. Tight finish for the remaining top ten spots but they are taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Stocker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko. These are all riders who receive bonus seconds, with everyone else now 25 seconds down in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen disappointedly eleventh ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Cimolai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/lph.png Guillen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Merino Criado. Some sprinters never got to see the front. Pretty disappointing results for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/esc.png Thorsen (19th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Reinhardt (21st), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Salleh (22nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/trg.png Krieger (23rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png Selig (25th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Bouhanni (26th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mck.png Keough (27th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Bennett (29th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nel.png Carsi (32nd).

The general classification and points classification are almost the same as the stage result, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Ismael Kip leading both but green will be worn by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Cisse tomorrow. The highest ranked rider in the GC who got there due to bonus seconds is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sva.png Kuznetsov, who is eighth at 20 seconds. The leader of the youth classification is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bsb.png S. Mugisha due to his free bonus seconds at the last intermediate sprint. As all teams have the same time, the teams classification is decided by lowest cumulative finishing position of the first three riders, which favors pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/cen.png Centovalli - Fiat with three riders in the top fifteen.
