The final stage of this year’s Volta a Catalunya is upon us! The stage is quite calm in the beginning and middle part, with only one mountain of 2nd category where some KoM-riders can score 10 points. Nevertheless, the finish is brutal. Kudus’ legs are hopefully for him feeling good, as attacks from his rivals are to be expected on the Tortosa climb, 8.4 km at 9% avg and a maximum gradient of 20%!
A breakaway of 11 rider forms, including 4 riders of Guave’s Sunlight Cycling; Eyob, Zordan, Wahyudi and Avetisyan. The best ranked rider here is Gallopin (22nd at 2’57” from Kudus), the other six leaders are Sotberg, Hulgaard, Parra Bustamente, Dyrnes, Hardy and Knox, making it three riders for Trans Cycling Team as well.
Four more riders join them a bit later, including a fifth rider from Guave’s Sunlight Cycling; Khodayari. The most important name here is Tanovitchii, who can grab the KoM-jersey if he crosses the summit of the mountain of 2nd category coming soon as first or second! The other two riders are Ahmad Zamri and Panayotov. Peloton at 2’15” with 130 km to go.
Some great news for the actual KoM-leader Vichot, as the riders who recently joined the leaders have been dropped already, including Tanovitchii. The only one still in the leading group on the Coll de Fatxes is Khodayari, who did not work while pursuing the original leaders.
Here’s something you won’t see every day. The whole team of Guave’s Sunlight Cycling takes in the first five places at the top of the Coll de Fatxes, with Eyob grabbing the 10 points. He now has 34 points and is 4th in the KoM classification. If he wants to win the jersey, he’ll have to win the stage as well. The peloton crosses the summit 4’ later, meaning Gallopin is riding in a virtual yellow jersey.
The leaders don’t care about the two intermediate sprints. With 50 km to go their lead over the peloton is around 2’.
The teams working in the peloton are not the big GC favourites, but Polar, DK – SVA Zalgiris, Kraftwerk and MOL.
As the riders enter the last 15k the road is already going up a bit. The peloton is 1’ behind.
The domestiques of Kraftwerk have almost closed the gap with the leaders as they start the ascent of the Tortosa climb, which is the sign for Wahyudi to attack! Gallopin tries to follow him!
They are quickly caught back though. Guave’s Sunlight Cycling tries it one more time as this time Eyob attacks at 7.5 km from the top! Dyrnes tried to follow him, but sits down quickly.
Martin with the attack now, pursuing Eyob with Latour and De la Cruz in his wheel! Then we see a gap before the next eight riders; Eastman, Dyrnes, Intxausti, Kudus, Bartl, Pomoshnikov, Henao Montoya and Hardy. Some important riders are still in what’s left of the peloton and have to react soon! Former winners Choi and Tenorio must come now, and so should Duarte, second in the GC at the moment!
While the other former members of the breakaway are now gone, Eyob still has a 30” lead with 5 km to climb! The two groups behind him are together, but Choi and Tenorio still haven’t closed the gap to that group!
Kudus wants to win the Volta in Catalunya in style! He attacks and joins Eyob 4 km from the top of the mountain!
Intxausti has been blown back to the peloton, where Tenorio is still trying to close that gap! Some more good news for Repsol – Netflix though, as Dunbar is still following the pace of the Spanish national champion. He almost lost his white jersey to Bernal yesterday, but seems to feeling better! The duo Uwizeyimana-Scarponi is doing a good job following Tenorio as well.
Tenorio has now closed the gap with the group in front of him, and so did Choi, Uwizeyimana and Scarponi! Kudus has a lead of almost one minute with only 3 km left to climb!
Choi and Eyob are back in what’s left of the peloton with 2 km to go!
It is not over yet though, as the 9 chasers come back to 30” from Kudus entering the last km! I say nine chasers, as De la Cruz seems to be in trouble!
And so is Dunbar! Bernal is only riding a bit further in front of him, but the difference between the two white jersey contenders is only eight seconds! Next to Bernal we can also see Andriafenomananiaina and Intxausti, who are now very close to taking a big dive in the GC as well!
Kudus found his second breath as he takes some extra seconds over the chasing group. With 400 metres to go it seems he will be taking his second stage win, the GC and the green jersey!
That’s exactly what he does! Merhawi Kudus winst he 13th edition of the Volta a Catalunya!
The chasers then cross the finish line in this order; Henao Montoya, Scarponi, Eastman, Uwizeyimana, Latour, Tenorio, Pomoshnikov, Martin and Bartl. De la Cruz only just manages to finish 11th before the first part of the peloton comes in.
Four minutes after Kudus, this groups crosses the line. In it we can see Bernal, Andriafenomananiaina and Intxausti. Bernal wins the white jersey, as Dunbar is in the next group together with Duarte, former yellow jersey in this Volta a Catalunya who will now lose a lot of places in the GC.
Kudus wins his second stage of this Volta a Catalunya and clearly was the best climber of the past week!

Kudus wins the GC as well, while Duarte, Intxausti and Choi drop out of the top-10, this means a strong double top-10 for Bakkafrost and Berg Cycles. Tenorio managed to move up one place and finish on the podium, but the former winner and his manager probably won't be very happy with this result.
