Volta a Catalunya - Stage 6
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat01.PNG

The final stage of this year’s Volta a Catalunya is upon us! The stage is quite calm in the beginning and middle part, with only one mountain of 2nd category where some KoM-riders can score 10 points. Nevertheless, the finish is brutal. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus’ legs are hopefully for him feeling good, as attacks from his rivals are to be expected on the Tortosa climb, 8.4 km at 9% avg and a maximum gradient of 20%!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat02.PNG

A breakaway of 11 rider forms, including 4 riders of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave’s Sunlight Cycling; Eyob, Zordan, Wahyudi and Avetisyan. The best ranked rider here is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Gallopin (22nd at 2’57” from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus), the other six leaders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Hulgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamente, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Knox, making it three riders for Trans Cycling Team as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat03.PNG

Four more riders join them a bit later, including a fifth rider from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave’s Sunlight Cycling; Khodayari. The most important name here is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii, who can grab the KoM-jersey if he crosses the summit of the mountain of 2nd category coming soon as first or second! The other two riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ahmad Zamri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Panayotov. Peloton at 2’15” with 130 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat04.PNG

Some great news for the actual KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot, as the riders who recently joined the leaders have been dropped already, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii. The only one still in the leading group on the Coll de Fatxes is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Khodayari, who did not work while pursuing the original leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat05.PNG

Here’s something you won’t see every day. The whole team of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave’s Sunlight Cycling takes in the first five places at the top of the Coll de Fatxes, with Eyob grabbing the 10 points. He now has 34 points and is 4th in the KoM classification. If he wants to win the jersey, he’ll have to win the stage as well. The peloton crosses the summit 4’ later, meaning pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Gallopin is riding in a virtual yellow jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat06.PNG

The leaders don’t care about the two intermediate sprints. With 50 km to go their lead over the peloton is around 2’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat07.PNG

The teams working in the peloton are not the big GC favourites, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Polar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png DK – SVA Zalgiris, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat08.PNG

As the riders enter the last 15k the road is already going up a bit. The peloton is 1’ behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat09.PNG

The domestiques of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk have almost closed the gap with the leaders as they start the ascent of the Tortosa climb, which is the sign for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Wahyudi to attack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Gallopin tries to follow him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat10.PNG

They are quickly caught back though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave’s Sunlight Cycling tries it one more time as this time Eyob attacks at 7.5 km from the top! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes tried to follow him, but sits down quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat11.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Martin with the attack now, pursuing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png De la Cruz in his wheel! Then we see a gap before the next eight riders; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Intxausti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy. Some important riders are still in what’s left of the peloton and have to react soon! Former winners pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio must come now, and so should pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Duarte, second in the GC at the moment!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat12.PNG

While the other former members of the breakaway are now gone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob still has a 30” lead with 5 km to climb! The two groups behind him are together, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio still haven’t closed the gap to that group!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat13.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus wants to win the Volta in Catalunya in style! He attacks and joins pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob 4 km from the top of the mountain!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat14.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Intxausti has been blown back to the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio is still trying to close that gap! Some more good news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Repsol – Netflix though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar is still following the pace of the Spanish national champion. He almost lost his white jersey to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Bernal yesterday, but seems to feeling better! The duo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Uwizeyimana-Scarponi is doing a good job following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat15.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio has now closed the gap with the group in front of him, and so did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Uwizeyimana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Scarponi! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus has a lead of almost one minute with only 3 km left to climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat16.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob are back in what’s left of the peloton with 2 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat17.PNG

It is not over yet though, as the 9 chasers come back to 30” from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus entering the last km! I say nine chasers, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png De la Cruz seems to be in trouble!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat18.PNG

And so is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Bernal is only riding a bit further in front of him, but the difference between the two white jersey contenders is only eight seconds! Next to Bernal we can also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Intxausti, who are now very close to taking a big dive in the GC as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat19.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus found his second breath as he takes some extra seconds over the chasing group. With 400 metres to go it seems he will be taking his second stage win, the GC and the green jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat20.PNG

That’s exactly what he does! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Merhawi Kudus winst he 13th edition of the Volta a Catalunya!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat21.PNG

The chasers then cross the finish line in this order; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Scarponi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Uwizeyimana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Martin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Bartl. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png De la Cruz only just manages to finish 11th before the first part of the peloton comes in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat22.PNG

Four minutes after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, this groups crosses the line. In it we can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Bernal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Intxausti. Bernal wins the white jersey, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar is in the next group together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Duarte, former yellow jersey in this Volta a Catalunya who will now lose a lot of places in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s6/6cat23.PNG

Kudus wins his second stage of this Volta a Catalunya and clearly was the best climber of the past week!

Kudus wins the GC as well, while Duarte, Intxausti and Choi drop out of the top-10, this means a strong double top-10 for Bakkafrost and Berg Cycles. Tenorio managed to move up one place and finish on the podium, but the former winner and his manager probably won't be very happy with this result.
