Volta a Catalunya - Stage 5
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat01.PNG

The fifth stage isn’t very long, but a mountain of second category close to the finish could cause breaks in the peloton or maybe even an attack of a GC favourite. In theory, yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus should be able to withstand attacks from his rivals on this terrain, but in practice things aren’t always the same. It will be interesting to see whether the break wins it again like it did in the first two stages, or we see a puncheur take the victory home.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat02.PNG

The weather conditions are terrible! Six riders don’t care though and form a breakaway! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter are second and third in the Kom ranking, the other riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Stenersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Hermans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Brunel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Van Poucke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat03.PNG

They are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Knox and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Jallays a bit later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat04.PNG

Nobody cares about the first intermediate sprint. Points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Jallays, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Stenersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Hermans. 110 km to go, peloton at 3’15”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat05.PNG

The teams working in the peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Nordstrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave’s Sunlight Cycling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Adastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png Glanbia, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Desigual, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Team Europcar. GC leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Repsol – Netflix are taking it easy so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat06.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii grabs six points on the Alt del Pubill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter takes four. They now have 46 and 40 points in the KoM classification, leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot has 52.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat07.PNG

The peloton enters the last 50 km 1’50” after the 8 leaders do. There are no flat roads left, from now on they’re either going up or going down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat08.PNG

The second and last intermediate sprint lays at 36 km from the finish line. The same three riders as at the first sprint take the points, just in another order this time. Peloton following at 1’30”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat09.PNG

The riders of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Guave’s Sunlight Cycling bring the peloton back before the ascent of the Turo del Puig. Good news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot, as he won’t be losing his KoM-jersey today. 28 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat10.PNG

The riders enter the last 20 km and will soon start going up the Turo del Puig. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Nordstrom – CA Technologies and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Team Europcar now setting the pace!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat11.PNG

2 km to the top and less than 15 km to the finish line and no attacks yet. Some riders are being dropped, but no big names.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat12.PNG

A small surprise now as white jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar is close to being dropped. Other interesting names in difficulty or being dropped are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Burmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Ortega, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Diggle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma and green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat13.PNG

Still a large peloton crossing the summit of the Turo del Puig. No interesting names take KoM points which is once again good news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot. The only thing left before we reach the finish line is a 12.5 km descent!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat14.PNG

The riders enter the last 5 km as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Team Europcar is still leading the way, but we don’t really see a rider of them capable of finishing this. The top 20 of the GC is at the front, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina (14th) who’s at the back of the peloton and needs to be careful to not lose any time now. Not a lot of sprinters at the front right now, the best ones we see within the first 25 riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Gough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Navardauskas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png King!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat15.PNG

Great effort by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Higuita, bringing Lithuanian champion Navardauskas to the head of the race within the last 2 km! The other sprinters are a bit further, this is a great opportunity for Adastra to win it!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat16.PNG

Nevertheless, it’s another national champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes, who starts the sprint with less than a km to go! The other sprinters are now a bit closer as well, and so are the GC guys!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat17.PNG

400 m to go and it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Navardauskas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Villella who are overtaking the Norwegian champion! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus still in the running for some bonus seconds as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat18.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Navardauskas now taking the lead with less than 200 m to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov trying to overtake him in the final metres!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat19.PNG

The Lithuanian champion can hold his speed until the line however, and wins the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes completing today’s podium ahead of yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gla.png King! The other top 10-spots are filled by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Villella, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Gough, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Egidio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Eaton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Henao.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s5/5cat20.PNG

Navardauskas wins stage 5 in Catalunya, which is great news for the Adastra team spirit. Canelon, who has been quite grumpy after missing out on a win in the first stage, gave Navardauskas a thousand hugs and kisses when he crossed the finish line 2'30" later. He then started drinking some Catalunyan Estrella Damm beer with manager ivaneurope, as they don't really care about the finishing mountain stage anyway. Everybody loves a happy ending.
