The fifth stage isn’t very long, but a mountain of second category close to the finish could cause breaks in the peloton or maybe even an attack of a GC favourite. In theory, yellow jersey Kudus should be able to withstand attacks from his rivals on this terrain, but in practice things aren’t always the same. It will be interesting to see whether the break wins it again like it did in the first two stages, or we see a puncheur take the victory home.
The weather conditions are terrible! Six riders don’t care though and form a breakaway! Tanovitchii and Venter are second and third in the Kom ranking, the other riders are Stenersen, Hermans, Brunel and Van Poucke.
They are joined by Knox and Jallays a bit later.
Nobody cares about the first intermediate sprint. Points go to Jallays, Stenersen and Hermans. 110 km to go, peloton at 3’15”.
The teams working in the peloton are Nordstrom, Guave’s Sunlight Cycling, Adastra, Glanbia, Desigual, MOL and Team Europcar. GC leaders Repsol – Netflix are taking it easy so far.
Tanovitchii grabs six points on the Alt del Pubill, Venter takes four. They now have 46 and 40 points in the KoM classification, leader Vichot has 52.
The peloton enters the last 50 km 1’50” after the 8 leaders do. There are no flat roads left, from now on they’re either going up or going down.
The second and last intermediate sprint lays at 36 km from the finish line. The same three riders as at the first sprint take the points, just in another order this time. Peloton following at 1’30”.
The riders of Guave’s Sunlight Cycling bring the peloton back before the ascent of the Turo del Puig. Good news for Vichot, as he won’t be losing his KoM-jersey today. 28 km to go!
The riders enter the last 20 km and will soon start going up the Turo del Puig. Nordstrom – CA Technologies and Team Europcar now setting the pace!
2 km to the top and less than 15 km to the finish line and no attacks yet. Some riders are being dropped, but no big names.
A small surprise now as white jersey Dunbar is close to being dropped. Other interesting names in difficulty or being dropped are Burmann, Ortega, Diggle, Atapuma and green jersey Katrasnik.
Still a large peloton crossing the summit of the Turo del Puig. No interesting names take KoM points which is once again good news for Vichot. The only thing left before we reach the finish line is a 12.5 km descent!
The riders enter the last 5 km as Team Europcar is still leading the way, but we don’t really see a rider of them capable of finishing this. The top 20 of the GC is at the front, except for Andriafenomananiaina (14th) who’s at the back of the peloton and needs to be careful to not lose any time now. Not a lot of sprinters at the front right now, the best ones we see within the first 25 riders are Gough, Ovsyannikov, Navardauskas and King!
Great effort by Higuita, bringing Lithuanian champion Navardauskas to the head of the race within the last 2 km! The other sprinters are a bit further, this is a great opportunity for Adastra to win it!
Nevertheless, it’s another national champion, Dyrnes, who starts the sprint with less than a km to go! The other sprinters are now a bit closer as well, and so are the GC guys!
400 m to go and it’s Navardauskas and Villella who are overtaking the Norwegian champion! Kudus still in the running for some bonus seconds as well!
Navardauskas now taking the lead with less than 200 m to go! Ovsyannikov trying to overtake him in the final metres!
The Lithuanian champion can hold his speed until the line however, and wins the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya! Ovsyannikov and Dyrnes completing today’s podium ahead of yellow jersey Kudus and King! The other top 10-spots are filled by Villella, Gough, Egidio, Eaton and Henao.
Navardauskas wins stage 5 in Catalunya, which is great news for the Adastra team spirit. Canelon, who has been quite grumpy after missing out on a win in the first stage, gave Navardauskas a thousand hugs and kisses when he crossed the finish line 2'30" later. He then started drinking some Catalunyan Estrella Damm beer with manager ivaneurope, as they don't really care about the finishing mountain stage anyway. Everybody loves a happy ending.

Tanovitchii comes closer to leader Vichot here, but the Frenchman has the best papers to win it tomorrow, as he should also be a bit fresher considering he didn't go in the attack today.

Team Europcar is still in the lead in the team's classificaton and could be winning some nice points there.
