Volta a Catalunya - Stage 4
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat01.PNG

The first mountain stage in the Volta a Catalunya! Will pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio be able to get back the time he lost yesterday to the other favourites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus? Will an outsider overperform and secure the win, or will it once again be the breakaway who manages to hold their lead until the line? All our questions will be answered soon, as the fourth stage is ready to begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat02.PNG

Seven riders attack and immediately go up the Alt de Parpers (3rd cat.). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Laas takes six points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Nareklishvili four and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy two. The other four riders in the leading group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat03.PNG

72 km in and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Laas easily wins the first intermediate sprint. One interesting thing we’ve noticed is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob doing absolutely no work and the others in the breakaway being fine with it. The peloton follows at 3’45” with 115 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat04.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan, who was the motor of the escapees, has now let them free. This means teammate Eyob has started working as well, and six leaders are left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat05.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamente and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Pavlic already have a teammate up front, but decide to attack from the peloton at 105 km with a bit more than 2’ difference. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan now using their slipsteam, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes decided to join the party as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat06.PNG

The two pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar men do all the work and bring Norwegian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan to the head of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat07.PNG

With 87 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Dyrnes wins the second intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Laas. The two pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Europcar riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan were close to being dropped again, but managed to come back in time. From now on, the riders will really start the mountain part of this stage! The peloton is 3’ behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat08.PNG

Before doing La Molina (1st cat.) twice, the riders have to conquer the Alt de Toses. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Pavlic is the first to be dropped in the leading group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat09.PNG

5 km left to the summit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Durasek are also dropped by the now seven leaders. The first part of the peloton is 1’30” behind, green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik and polka-dat jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot have been dropped there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat10.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy is being cheered on by a French fan, as he takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma with him on the steepest portion of the climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat11.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma wins the sprint for the KoM as the riders enter the last 50 km, with 2 ascents of La Molina to go! A peloton of 50 crosses the line 2’45” later. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Suaza (3rd in GC) has been dropped quite fast!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat12.PNG

As the leaders begin their first ascent of La Molina, they are back with six riders, and the peloton has come quite close at 1’30”. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob hasn’t given up hope yet and attacks with 36 km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat13.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Hardy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma join him with 6.5 km left to climb! The Colombian immediately attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat14.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Atapuma reaches the top of the mountain with 45” over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Eyob and 1’ over the 43-riders peloton. A bit more than 25 km to go for the Colombian!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat15.PNG

He won’t be winning today’s stage it seems. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Aramco DP now setting the pace in the peloton as we start the last climb of the day, Atapuma’s lead is now less than half a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat16.PNG

Spanish champion and GC favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio knows he has to attack and that’s what he does with 9 km left! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus immediately follows him and the attack is over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat17.PNG

White jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Dunbar has to let the 34 strongest climbers go with 6 km left to the finish line. He’s still doing a good job for the U25 classification though, as his main contender pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Bernal is in the group behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat18.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio at it again! There’s only 4 km left to the finish line and 1 km to the top of La Molina and it seems the Spaniard is not capable of going solo! With him we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Bartl, behind them three other riders are trying to close the gap; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat19.PNG

The five leaders are still only less than 30” in front when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus is the first to cross the summit line, they will now start their 3 km descent to the finish! In the following group of 22 yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Duarte is still present! His lead over Kudus in the GC is 10 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat20.PNG

With the chasers being that close there is a possibility of the jury deciding on no time difference, so if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus wants to be certain to conquer the yellow jersey he needs those extra seconds at the finish line! He starts the sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya just behind him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat21.PNG

He’s still In the lead with 300 m to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat22.PNG

And he wins the fourth stage of the Volta a Catalunya! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Pomoshnikov is the surprising number two ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Henao Montoya!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat23.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Martin gets a decent fifth place and sees the rest of the top 10 being completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png De la Cruz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Eastman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Choi. The other GC favourites all seem to be in this group as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s4/4cat24.PNG

Kudus wins stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya, not winning the team time trial has already been forgotten now!
