The first mountain stage in the Volta a Catalunya! Will Tenorio be able to get back the time he lost yesterday to the other favourites Eastman and Kudus? Will an outsider overperform and secure the win, or will it once again be the breakaway who manages to hold their lead until the line? All our questions will be answered soon, as the fourth stage is ready to begin!
Seven riders attack and immediately go up the Alt de Parpers (3rd cat.). Laas takes six points, Nareklishvili four and Hardy two. The other four riders in the leading group are Eyob, Zordan, Atapuma and Durasek.
72 km in and Laas easily wins the first intermediate sprint. One interesting thing we’ve noticed is Eyob doing absolutely no work and the others in the breakaway being fine with it. The peloton follows at 3’45” with 115 km to go.
Zordan, who was the motor of the escapees, has now let them free. This means teammate Eyob has started working as well, and six leaders are left.
Parra Bustamente and Pavlic already have a teammate up front, but decide to attack from the peloton at 105 km with a bit more than 2’ difference. Zordan now using their slipsteam, while Dyrnes decided to join the party as well.
The two Europcar men do all the work and bring Norwegian champion Dyrnes and Zordan to the head of the race.
With 87 km to go Dyrnes wins the second intermediate sprint ahead of Laas. The two Europcar riders and Zordan were close to being dropped again, but managed to come back in time. From now on, the riders will really start the mountain part of this stage! The peloton is 3’ behind.
Before doing La Molina (1st cat.) twice, the riders have to conquer the Alt de Toses. Pavlic is the first to be dropped in the leading group.
5 km left to the summit and Zordan and Durasek are also dropped by the now seven leaders. The first part of the peloton is 1’30” behind, green jersey Katrasnik and polka-dat jersey Vichot have been dropped there.
Hardy is being cheered on by a French fan, as he takes Eyob and Atapuma with him on the steepest portion of the climb!
Atapuma wins the sprint for the KoM as the riders enter the last 50 km, with 2 ascents of La Molina to go! A peloton of 50 crosses the line 2’45” later. Suaza (3rd in GC) has been dropped quite fast!
As the leaders begin their first ascent of La Molina, they are back with six riders, and the peloton has come quite close at 1’30”. Eyob hasn’t given up hope yet and attacks with 36 km to go!
Hardy and Atapuma join him with 6.5 km left to climb! The Colombian immediately attacks!
Atapuma reaches the top of the mountain with 45” over Eyob and 1’ over the 43-riders peloton. A bit more than 25 km to go for the Colombian!
He won’t be winning today’s stage it seems. Aramco DP now setting the pace in the peloton as we start the last climb of the day, Atapuma’s lead is now less than half a minute.
Spanish champion and GC favourite Tenorio knows he has to attack and that’s what he does with 9 km left! Kudus immediately follows him and the attack is over.
White jersey Dunbar has to let the 34 strongest climbers go with 6 km left to the finish line. He’s still doing a good job for the U25 classification though, as his main contender Bernal is in the group behind him.
Tenorio at it again! There’s only 4 km left to the finish line and 1 km to the top of La Molina and it seems the Spaniard is not capable of going solo! With him we see Kudus, Henao Montoya, Pomoshnikov and Bartl, behind them three other riders are trying to close the gap; Eastman, Latour and Choi!
The five leaders are still only less than 30” in front when Kudus is the first to cross the summit line, they will now start their 3 km descent to the finish! In the following group of 22 yellow jersey Duarte is still present! His lead over Kudus in the GC is 10 seconds!
With the chasers being that close there is a possibility of the jury deciding on no time difference, so if Kudus wants to be certain to conquer the yellow jersey he needs those extra seconds at the finish line! He starts the sprint with Tenorio and Henao Montoya just behind him!
He’s still In the lead with 300 m to go!
And he wins the fourth stage of the Volta a Catalunya! Pomoshnikov is the surprising number two ahead of Tenorio and Henao Montoya!
Martin gets a decent fifth place and sees the rest of the top 10 being completed by De la Cruz, Bartl, Latour, Eastman and Choi. The other GC favourites all seem to be in this group as well.
Kudus wins stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya, not winning the team time trial has already been forgotten now!
