[PT] Tirreno-Adriatico
Just as yesterday we got a stage that is significantly different from last year’s mountain stage from Foligno to Sarnano with summit finish at Sassotetto ski resort won by Silvio Herklotz. This time we got a punchy ride from Colli al Metauro to Recanati. The finish somewhat similar to yesterday, but the route is very different with a lot less climbing and most of it concentrated with the last 10-15 kilometres, containing three short hill climbs, the last and steepest up to the finish line.
Before we start the race, a look at how much the top punchers are behind race leader Rohan Dennis.
Rider GC position
Bobridge2 1" Hagen6 32" Kwiatkowski9 43" Kinoshita12 50" Ponzi17 1'23" Vakoc22 1'53" Mohoric23 1'45" Van Garderen24 1'53" Chaves29 2'07" Skujins31 2'28" Prevar34 2'42" Bakelants52 4'31" Jensen56 4'53" Bystrom72 6'28" Boswell109 10'10"
At this point most of the top punchers are in a difficult situation
It will be partly clouded and 15°C, windspeed 0 – 2 km/h
The finish line counts as a cat. 3
The Race
The stage starts directly uphill towards the first cat.3 climb.
Jacobsen attacks first, behind him also Dekker, Sütterlin and Vlatos accelerating.
Jacobsen takes the KoM, in the meantime another 8 riders has left the pack behind. Most notably top puncher Jensen.
The other are Bolor-Erdene, Cepeda, Chernetskiy, Declerq, Ford, Godoy and Turek
More riders join the 2nd group, coming up from the fast pack sitting only 53” behind the pursuit. Arifin, M. Lammertink, Senyenov, Toupalik and Van Niekerk
The original break got 34” to the pursuit, as we reach the undulated sector prior to the first point sprint. 128 km left.
The pursuit catches the original breakaway, but also the pack is getting close.
For some obscure reason Ford attacks to claim the points sprint, maybe a failed attempt to go alone before the pack catch up.
The pack is just 26” behind the breakaway, forcing the strongest riders in the breakaway to attack against each other.
First Jensen, M. Lammertink, Turek
Then Bolor-Erdene, Sütterlin, Toupalik
Finally Ford and Godoy
With about 90 km left it seems that the pack needs a breather and the pace drops, the eight riders named above form the new breakaway, everyone else was reeled in.
The stage leaders reach the cat.4 with 4’31”, Lammertink takes the KoM in front of Toupalik and Jensen.
M. Lammertink moves up the 4th in KoM, 61 km left.
The pack speeds up realising that now is the time, if the breakaway should not be allowed to take the stage win, but over the next 40 km they only reduce the gap with about a minute, even though a lot of riders take part in the pursuit Hsu, Larsen, Liu, Reus, Santos and Viviani, just to mention some of the most active.
The breakaway at the cat. 4 opening the triple climb finish, just 11 km left and the pack is at about 3 minutes.
Lammertink takes the KoM moving up the 2nd in the competition
6 km left for the breakaway, Jensen attack and takes the cat.3 KoM in front of Lammertink and Bolor-Erdene
The pack is at 2’36” still 167 riders left, the GC fighting not begun.
Over the top of the KoM first development amongst the favourites, it is Hagen acceleration with Bobridge and Kinoshita at wheel.
Ponzi with Gidich and Van Garderen counters a few seconds later.
Ponzi close up and seemingly also Gidich, Van Garderen not quite there yet.
Jensen leading the breakaway at the foot of the final hill, 2 km left for them.
At the same time with with 4 km left Kinoshita leads the pursuit in front of Hagen, Ponzi, Bobridge and Gidich
Van Garderen never connected and now leads the next group of 23 riders.
Overview of the first 5 groups at this point
!.5 km left for the leading riders, it is Jensen who has attacked and now got a 16” lead, he is at a 9.9% slope.
At the same time in the favourite group, the pursuit is getting much closer and Van Garderen has almost bridged the gap only a few meters behind Gidich
Officially this is now big group of 36 riders, 2’32 behind Jensen, they got about 1 km to the beginning of the final hill.
Only 1 kilometre left for Jensen, with 25” to the 7 riders behind. The Slope is 10.1%
At the same time.
The favourite group is now one large group of 29 riders, the got 1.9 km left and has entered the final hill. Hagen leading in front of Bobridge and Kinoshita. In Third row Gidich and Ponzi
Then Mohoric, Van Garderen, Tratnik, Boswell, Calmejane, Pluchkin, Aranburu, Vakoc.
The entire GC top 10 is still here with also Brändle, Dennis, Goos, Kangert, Kwiatkowski and Sepulveda further back in the group.
Up at the front Ford attacks and gets very close to Jensen pretty fast.
The slope here is stunning 18.8%, 700 meters left for Jensen
At the same time in the favourite group.
Ponzi leads, but with just a few cm to Bobridge at his left and Kinoshita at his right. Slope 19.7%
In 2nd row we got Hagen, Mohoric and Gidich almost side by side.
Behind them Boily and Kwiatkowski both with a great last few 100 meters.
All the above-mentioned riders now with a small gap to the next riders, sitting in about this ordre:
Vakoc, Van Garderen, Boswell, Tratnik, Calmejane, Skujins, Bakelants Pluchkin.
Just as previously the entire GC top 10 is in this group, but especially Brändle and Dennis struggling not to drop on these hard slopes.
Up front Ford really found some momentum, passing the much stronger puncher Jensen with ease.
Jensen must have used too much too early and it now above limits.
Bolor-Erdene, M. Lammertink, Toupalik and Turek is also closing in on him.
400 meters left for Ford, slope 7.7%
At the same time in the favourite group.
Bobridge attacks and is now about to pass Sütterlin dropped from the breakaway. Slope 16.7% with 700 meters left for Bobridge
But just a few meters down to Ponzi, Kinoshita and Mohoric, the latter with a great last few 100 meters.
The above mentioned 5 rider officially got 33” to the next 23 riders, but on slopes like these those kind of figures are misleading, there is just one good acceleration between Mohoric and the leading rider in next group Skujins.
The leading rider in the group are besides Skujins, Gidich, Hagen, Kwiatkowski, Boily Van Niekerk and Bakelants.
At the rear of the group, top 10 riders Sepulveda, Brändle and Dennis, fighting not to drop.
200 meters left for Ford, but why not start celebrating, there is no way he can lose this one.
Lammertink 2nd , Toupalik 3rd losing 27”
Jensen 4th losing 41”, must be a huge disappointment after everything seemed so great for him passing under the red kite.
Bolor-Erdene 6th and Turek 7th both losing 1'05”
First of the favourites Bobridge 7th alone at 1'29”
Ponzi 8th, Mohoric 9th, Kinoshita 10th, Skujins 11th and Godoy 12th at 1’37”
12” later Yevgeniy Gidich (King Power) Aleksandr Pluchkin (Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff) Aidan Van Niekerk (Festina – OAKA) Jan Bakelants (Indosat Ooredoo) David Boily (Festina – OAKA) and Michal Kwiatkowski (Aker – MOT) at 1’49”, everyone else lost more than 2 minutes
