Race Report, Stage 4

Stage 4 of Paris – Nice goes 192 flat km for Cepay – Moulins-Yzeure. There are two sprint points along the way, one very early one very late. Festina’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard dominated the first sprint stage and again leads the favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/favs.jpg

If one of the sprinters who were competitive in Stage 2 can take the stage today then they will likely get the points jersey as well.

We get 7 riders quickly off the front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Antonijevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Stavrakakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Boaro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Castrillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Hofstede, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/01.jpg

But the lead is only 43 seconds, the peloton hasn’t relented and other riders are attacking. Attacks from Rakuten, Moser and Evonik only succeed in bring the first 7 back. With 13km gone the group is all back together.

A new attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Ringheim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Fejes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg looking for his 3rd consecutive day in the break. Swisslion seem to want to be in the breakaway today and are chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/02.jpg

And the break doesn’t last as Swisslion track them down. This means the sprinters get to contest the sprint point with 170k to go and the points go to: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/03.jpg

While Tinkoff worked hard to set up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, Festina are clearly keeping their powder dry as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard showed no interest.

After a quiet few kilometers we get another round of attacks and finally with a 40 km gone we have the break of day:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Ringheim
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/duo.png Bagioli
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Fernandes
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/04.jpg

The lead peaks at about 4 minutes with 130k to go and then Festina, Aegon and Tinkoff begin the chase with 1 rider each

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/05.jpg

With 100km to go the lead is down to just under 3 minutes and Aegon and Tinkoff have added a second rider to the chase. It is also pouring down rain.

The lead stays at around 3 minutes for most of the next 45k but then the chasers pick up the pace and as they reach 50k to go the lead is down to 2’17. 8 riders chasing now:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Novikov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Vorobev
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Rucigaj
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Shalunov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Koep

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/06.jpg

With 30 km to go the lead is down to 1’18 and it is still raining cats and dogs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis has nothing left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas has replaced him. Not the best news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard’s lead out.

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Holmes flatted a while back and has been unable to rejoin, he is 6’30 down and will have a long, lonely, wet ride home.

The 2nd sprint point comes with 12km to go so the break might not make it to that.

13km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Ringheim is caught with 3 more members of the break almost back in the pack. But a late attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz means they will take the sprint points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz takes it ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk. More importantly the chase loses steam meaning pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj takes 3rd and the breaks lead begins to expand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/08.jpg

The front two have 1’05 and the next 3, 25 seconds, with 12 km to ride. Who will take up the chase?

Seeing nobody else coming to the front it is Tinkoff again with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Foliforov doing it all on his own. With just under 10km to go he has the front two at 56 seconds. But he is going to need help.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/09.jpg

He gets help from Festina’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios and all but the front two are brought back. With 7.4 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk are holding on to a lead of 32 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/10.jpg

Finally Festina’s climbing domestique delux pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno comes to the front and helps pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios close it down. With 4.5km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kruijswijk still has 14 seconds but he is on his last legs and soon the sprint will open up

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/11.jpg

With the rain, the limited sprint teams and the hard chase there aren’t going to be big leadouts. With 2.7km to go on the nearside is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Paez. On the far side it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/12.jpg

With 2,700 meters still to go the top sprinters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov will be worried that they only have 1 lead out man each. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen are just behind the trains and have time to get in position but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Appollonio have more work to do.

Just under 2km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios had to drop off and the two trains had to merge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov is still leading and behind him are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera
And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen trying to latch on. There is a small gap to where the GC contenders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/13.jpg

Under the 1km banner to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov drops and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss. Can they hold it to the finish line all will a rider further back still slipstreaming catch them?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/14.jpg

700 meters to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss neck and neck. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov who is fading. Then from right to left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh. Finally, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera. Long day, messy sprint, seems like a contest tailor-made for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Holloway, but his team had other priorities for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins has started to sprint further back but he has a lot of ground to make up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Appollonio apparently believes he should not have to sprint in wet conditions.

300 meters. Predictably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss has faded as has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard leads but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras are still hunting him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/16.jpg

100 meters for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard, looks good for a second stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa holds second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen is coming fast on the near barrier and he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera also still have a shot at the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard celebrates a 2nd stage win and the points jersey, his team have balanced their sprint and GC ambitions well so far. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa looks good for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras fighting for the last podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen takes 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen for 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer takes 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov settles for 10th. Tinkoff used too much energy on the chase and didn’t have the riders left to finish it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard now has an 18 point lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov in the points competition. But with no more sprint stages he will be challenged to hold that to the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Sicard still leads the race and there are no changes in the other jerseys either.
