[PT] Tirreno-Adriatico
Now we move into unknown territory, as last year’s 204.1 km mountain rich stage from Sillian to Mezzolombardo is replaced with a 189.2 km semi-mountain stage from Foligno to Fossombrone. This stage should on paper be one of those mostly favouring the hybrids over the pure punchers, with some relative long climbs spread out over the route, and especially the last very hard quarter of the stage, should guaranty that we won’t see a huge group passing the finish-line together, can expect that many of the tempo specialists will drop out of the GC.
As very little changed GC wise yesterday, can refer to stage 3 report regarding the time lost in the ITT.
It will be partly clouded with 11°C, winds at just 2-3 km/hour.
The finish line counts as a cat. 3
The Race
Culey open the race at the outskirts of Foligno, behind him we also see Bolor-Erdene accelerating.
The duo was joined by Arifin, Serrano and Takenouchi, still more than 180 km left.
The fight to get into today’s breakaway not over just yet, Roberge alone in pursuit, and behind him a group of Bravo, Bystrom, Giannoutsos and Haugard have also distanced the pack.
Roberge cleverly waits for the group behind to form a five-rider pursuit.
The pace in the pack is still high, not allowing the leading group more than around two minutes, and the pursuit having quite a hard time not able to close the 20 – 30 seconds the have had to the leaders for quite a while.
Finally, after more than 40 km high pace pursuit, the pack slows and the two group out in front melts together. Time to take a look at who we got here.
Two KoM contenders, Culey 3rd with 8 points and Bolor-Erdene 5th with 6 points. Most of the ten riders way down in GC, best is Bravo 72nd at 1’52 and Culey 76th at 1’55
Strongest on paper for a profile like this clearly Bystrom (+5’25), but also Bravo and Serrano quite strong punchers.
With especially Baska working non stop in front of the pack, the gap was never allowed to go beyond 3 minutes and when the breakaway starts the first KoM climb, it is just 2’17”
1st. KoM, cat.3 3.2 km at 4.3%
Arifin push hard on the last KM of the KoM and his acceleration pay out, taking the 6 points in front of Bravo and Bystrom
With about 60 km left we start to see some small gaps in the peloton and it gets worse and worse with many riders struggling. Over the top of the long uncategorized hill between the two KoM climbs, the splits are developing into several large groups, Boswell and Jensen loses contact with the main pack.
Serrano, Arifin, Takenouchi, Bravo and Haugard attacks and form a new leading group as the pack is getting close, but it was all in vain they are caught before the KoM.
2nd. KoM, cat.3 3.1 km at 5.8%
This time it is the favourites leading up the last two km, the first 10 is Ponzi, Kinoshita, Skujins, Bystrom, Mohoric, Pluchkin, Prevar, Van Garderen, Trondsen and Vakoc
Kwiatkowski at the wheel of Trondsen, Boily, Hagen and Bobridge also amongst the first 20 riders.
From about 20th position Tarvis moved forward quickly and attacks from 900 meters, he wins the KoM in front of Ponzi and Skujins.
About 21 km left.
67 riders in the first group at we reach the final hill, 2.8 km at 8.0%
Evonik – ELKO leads the group, with Becis and Riesebeek
In first row behind the pace setters it is Skujins, Pluchkin, Trondsen
2nd row is Ponzi, Dennis, Calmejane, Müller
Then in approx. this order: Aranburu, Tarvis, Gabburo, Brändle, Kangert, Kwiatkowski, Bystrom, Gidich, Kinoshita, Van Garderen, Mohoric
1.5 km left, leading rider at a 10.2% slope
Skujins have taken the lead slightly in front of Ponzi both at the left side.
Mohoric and Kwiatkowski about a cycle-length behind at the right.
6 riders more or less on par in 2nd row Tratnik, Kinoshita, Gidich, Kangert, Trondsen and Hagen
4 riders in 3nd row Dennis, Prevar, Sepulveda and Vakoc
At the rear of what seems to be a “sort of” favourite group, Bystrom, Pluchkin, Furdi, Boily, Bobridge, Brändle and Bellis
Officially still 67 riders in the leading group
1 km left (note the red kite is misplaced on this stage) leading rider at a 11.1% slope
Mohoric with 20km/h accelerated and now leads the stage.
Skujins 2nd but with 16 km/h lost some momentum. Kinoshita 3nd and also at 20 km/h not far behind the leader. Ponzi just like Skujins at 16 km/h, might both have started this finish a bit too early.
Kwiatkowski (19 km/h) and Hagen (20 km/h) both part of first line and surely still fighting for a win.
Gidich (18 km/h) and Kangert (19 km/h) hanging on to the rear of first group not out of this stage either.
Then some small gap down to the 2nd group with Bobridge, Dennis, Sepulveda, Tratnik, Pluchkin, Prevar, Boily, Bellis, Vakoc
Would be a surprise to see one of them take this stage with just a kilometre left.
Well maybe not!
700 m left, the slope now starting to decrease, leading rider at 9%
Bobridge have made an impressive acceleration, moving up along the right side from the 2nd group up to 2nd position (23 km/h), but it is Kinoshita (19 km/h) getting a clear lead at the left side about 2-3 meters in front of everyone else.
Behind Kinoshita, Kwiatkowski (19 km/h), Mohoric (18 km/h) and Hagen (17 km/h) almost on line.
A few meters down to Ponzi (19 km/h), Skujins (18 km/h), Kangert (19 km/h), Gidich (19 km/h) almost on line.
Then another small gap down to a line with, Dennis (18 km/h), Pluchkin (21 km/h), Sepulveda (18 km/h),
Behind those three Boily (18 km/h), Tratnik (18 km/h)
500 m left, slope 8.5%
Kinoshita (19 km/h) now leads with under a meter to Bobridge (19 km/h)
Close to Kinoshita’s rear wheel Kwiatkowski (21 km/h) in 3rd position, and Mohoric (20 km/h) at Kwiatkowski’s left rear.
Then Hagen (19 km/h), Ponzi (20 km/h), Kangert (20 km/h), Gidich (20 km/h), Skujins (19 km/h), Pluchkin (23 km/h) in one large cluster.
Dennis (20 km/h) desperately trying to hold on to Pluchkin wheel.
300 meters left, slope 5.7%
Time to set in the decisive kick for those who has something left.
Kinoshita (24 km/h) seems to have gained back something from Bobridge (23 km/h) Kwiatkowski (24 km/h) also very close.
In 2nd row Mohoric (23 km/h) and Pluchkin (29 km/h, great comeback from him.
3rd row, Ponzi (22 km/h), Hagen (21 km/h), Kangert (22 km/h)
At Hagen’s wheel Gidich (21 km/h) on Ponzi’s wheel Skujins (21 km/h) and Dennis (22 km/h) trying to stick to Gidich.
Some gap to the next rider.
Tomohiro Kinoshita wins the stage in front of Kwiatkowski 2nd and Pluchkin takes the last podium.
Bobridge 4th and Mohoric 5th
Ponzi 6th, Kangert 7th, Hagen 8th, Gidich 9th and Skujins rounds of top 10.
Dennis 11th does not lose time and will take the race lead, as Mads Würtz loses 1'07”
Matthias Brändle 12th, Eduardo Sepulveda 13th , Jan Tratnik 14th and David Boily 15th also in the same time as the stage winner, everyone else lost 33” or more.
