Tirreno - Adriatico stage 4
Tamijo
[PT] Tirreno-Adriatico

Now we move into unknown territory, as last year’s 204.1 km mountain rich stage from Sillian to Mezzolombardo is replaced with a 189.2 km semi-mountain stage from Foligno to Fossombrone. This stage should on paper be one of those mostly favouring the hybrids over the pure punchers, with some relative long climbs spread out over the route, and especially the last very hard quarter of the stage, should guaranty that we won’t see a huge group passing the finish-line together, can expect that many of the tempo specialists will drop out of the GC.

As very little changed GC wise yesterday, can refer to stage 3 report regarding the time lost in the ITT.

It will be partly clouded with 11°C, winds at just 2-3 km/hour.
The finish line counts as a cat. 3

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Culey open the race at the outskirts of Foligno, behind him we also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bolor-Erdene accelerating.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/01.jpg

The duo was joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Arifin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Takenouchi, still more than 180 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/02.jpg

The fight to get into today’s breakaway not over just yet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Roberge alone in pursuit, and behind him a group of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Giannoutsos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Haugard have also distanced the pack.

Roberge cleverly waits for the group behind to form a five-rider pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/03.jpg

The pace in the pack is still high, not allowing the leading group more than around two minutes, and the pursuit having quite a hard time not able to close the 20 – 30 seconds the have had to the leaders for quite a while.

Finally, after more than 40 km high pace pursuit, the pack slows and the two group out in front melts together. Time to take a look at who we got here.
Two KoM contenders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Culey 3rd with 8 points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Bolor-Erdene 5th with 6 points. Most of the ten riders way down in GC, best is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo 72nd at 1’52 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Culey 76th at 1’55

Strongest on paper for a profile like this clearly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Bystrom (+5’25), but also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano quite strong punchers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/04.jpg

With especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Baska working non stop in front of the pack, the gap was never allowed to go beyond 3 minutes and when the breakaway starts the first KoM climb, it is just 2’17”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/05.jpg

1st. KoM, cat.3 3.2 km at 4.3%
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Arifin push hard on the last KM of the KoM and his acceleration pay out, taking the 6 points in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Bystrom

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/06.jpg

With about 60 km left we start to see some small gaps in the peloton and it gets worse and worse with many riders struggling. Over the top of the long uncategorized hill between the two KoM climbs, the splits are developing into several large groups, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ebd.png Boswell and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Jensen loses contact with the main pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/grm.png Serrano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Arifin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Takenouchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Haugard attacks and form a new leading group as the pack is getting close, but it was all in vain they are caught before the KoM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/08.jpg

2nd. KoM, cat.3 3.1 km at 5.8%
This time it is the favourites leading up the last two km, the first 10 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski at the wheel of Trondsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge also amongst the first 20 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/09.jpg

From about 20th position pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis moved forward quickly and attacks from 900 meters, he wins the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins.

About 21 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/10.jpg

67 riders in the first group at we reach the final hill, 2.8 km at 8.0%
Evonik – ELKO leads the group, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Becis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Riesebeek

In first row behind the pace setters it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Trondsen

2nd row is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Müller

Then in approx. this order: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Aranburu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Tarvis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Gabburo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/11.jpg

1.5 km left, leading rider at a 10.2% slope
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins have taken the lead slightly in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi both at the left side.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski about a cycle-length behind at the right.
6 riders more or less on par in 2nd row pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen
4 riders in 3nd row pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc

At the rear of what seems to be a “sort of” favourite group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Furdi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Brändle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis

Officially still 67 riders in the leading group

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/12.jpg

1 km left (note the red kite is misplaced on this stage) leading rider at a 11.1% slope
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric with 20km/h accelerated and now leads the stage.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins 2nd but with 16 km/h lost some momentum. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita 3nd and also at 20 km/h not far behind the leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi just like Skujins at 16 km/h, might both have started this finish a bit too early.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski (19 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen (20 km/h) both part of first line and surely still fighting for a win.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich (18 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert (19 km/h) hanging on to the rear of first group not out of this stage either.

Then some small gap down to the 2nd group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bellis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Vakoc
Would be a surprise to see one of them take this stage with just a kilometre left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/13.jpg

Well maybe not!
700 m left, the slope now starting to decrease, leading rider at 9%
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge have made an impressive acceleration, moving up along the right side from the 2nd group up to 2nd position (23 km/h), but it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita (19 km/h) getting a clear lead at the left side about 2-3 meters in front of everyone else.

Behind Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski (19 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric (18 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen (17 km/h) almost on line.

A few meters down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi (19 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins (18 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert (19 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich (19 km/h) almost on line.

Then another small gap down to a line with, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis (18 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin (21 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda (18 km/h),
Behind those three pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Boily (18 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik (18 km/h)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/14.jpg

500 m left, slope 8.5%
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita (19 km/h) now leads with under a meter to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge (19 km/h)

Close to Kinoshita’s rear wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski (21 km/h) in 3rd position, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric (20 km/h) at Kwiatkowski’s left rear.

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen (19 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi (20 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert (20 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich (20 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins (19 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin (23 km/h) in one large cluster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis (20 km/h) desperately trying to hold on to Pluchkin wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/15.jpg

300 meters left, slope 5.7%
Time to set in the decisive kick for those who has something left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita (24 km/h) seems to have gained back something from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge (23 km/h) pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski (24 km/h) also very close.
In 2nd row pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric (23 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin (29 km/h, great comeback from him.

3rd row, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi (22 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen (21 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert (22 km/h)

At Hagen’s wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich (21 km/h) on Ponzi’s wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins (21 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis (22 km/h) trying to stick to Gidich.

Some gap to the next rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Tomohiro Kinoshita wins the stage in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Kwiatkowski 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin takes the last podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/iso.png Mohoric 5th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ubs.png Ponzi 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Kangert 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/afk.png Hagen 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Gidich 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Skujins rounds of top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gen.png Dennis 11th does not lose time and will take the race lead, as Mads Würtz loses 1'07”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/Tirreno-Adriatico/S4/19.jpg

Matthias Brändle 12th, Eduardo Sepulveda 13th , Jan Tratnik 14th and David Boily 15th also in the same time as the stage winner, everyone else lost 33” or more.
