Volta a Catalunya - Stage 2
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat01.PNG

Today’s stage is one for the puncheurs, although two mountains of first category and one of second are also on the menu, aside from the three mountains of third category. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram was the surprising winner yesterday and will now try to defend his jersey, which will not be easy at all. It might be his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Zordan taking over that yellow jersey, or one of the three guys from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Nordstrom – CA Technologies. It will also be interesting to see what the GC guys, such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, can do.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat02.PNG

It’s green jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik who’s first to attack! The Slovenian of Gjensidige is on a mission to ensure that green jersey, and maybe to the same thing with the KoM-jersey as he’s currently leading there as well. Defending the green jersey seems the most likely for him though, as the mountains are not really his thing. We have some strong names in this attack of seven; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Goncalves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/azt.png Egidio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Jallays.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat03.PNG

37 km in the race and we have the sprint for the first KoM (3rd cat), which is a very close one! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik wins it however and extends his lead by six points, the other points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat04.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot quickly gets his revenge as he wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii. The peloton is following at 5’30” with 130 km to go while we start to enter the mountain area of today’s stage. The weird thing is the teams that are doing the work in the peloton are the same as yesterday; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Adastra. Do they believe in a sprint?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat05.PNG

Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram is surrounded by his teammates at the back of the peloton and seems to be having a hard time already. It seems unlikely for him to still wear that jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat06.PNG

The gradient of the climb is only at 1% and we see the wearer of today’s polka dot jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca, as last rider in the peloton. Just in front of him almost the entire young team of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team cheering on Katrasnik through the team coms.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat07.PNG

The ascent of the Alt Dels Pinars De Bado (2nd cat.) was quite calm in the breakaway group, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii grabbing the ten points, the other points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Goncalves, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Jallays. The peloton is now being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eur.png Team Europcar and has reduced the breakaway lead to 3’30” with just over 100 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat08.PNG

That superior quality salmon is really doing it for Bakkafrost’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot, who wins the sprint against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii on the Alt de la Pullosa (3rd cat.) and grabs the virtual mountain jersey. Still two mountains of first category to come though, as well as an intermediate sprint in a couple of km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat09.PNG

That sprint is also easily won by the Frenchman, with the other points going to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii. 75 km to go and the peloton following at 3’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat10.PNG

The Alt el Muntanya (1st cat.) is short but very steep. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter attacks and takes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii with him as they enter the last km before the top!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat11.PNG

The Frenchman beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii once again, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Jallays and the other chasers coming over the line a minute later! The peloton is now trailing by 4’, will this be another stage for the breakaway group?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat12.PNG

The three leader are okay with the four chasers coming back quickly. Only 10 km to go until the summit of the next mountain of first category and 65 until the finish. The peloton now having to make up 5’!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat13.PNG

The Coll Formic is longer, but not as steep. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot extends his lead in the KoM classification by crossing the line ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat14.PNG

The peloton crosses the top at 3’15”. At the head of the peloton we see domestiques of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/nca.png Nordstrom – CA Technologies and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Aramco DP. 23 riders have been dropped so far, no big names.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat15.PNG

The three leaders have 35 km left to go, translating to the ascent and descent of the Alt de Collsacreu (3rd cat.) The finale is therefore exactly the same as yesterday, where the breakaway of three managed to survive! They still have 2’45” over the peloton, with the other members of the breakaway of seven swimming somewhere in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat16.PNG

Just less than 20 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter wins the sprint on the Alt de Collsacreu. The peloton following at 1’30” now, where the sprinter teams are doing the work again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Canelon has been dropped though, bombarding pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl to favourite if the break is caught!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat17.PNG

That’s a big ‘if’ though, as the break is still leading by more than 1’ while they enter the last 10 km of the race!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat18.PNG

Attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Venter with 6 km to go! The South African knows he’s the slowest of the three in the sprint and decides to go solo!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat19.PNG

The other two work together and close the gap with 3.5 km left. The three leaders seem to be looking at each other now, but they don’t have the time for games as the peloton is coming closer!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat20.PNG

This can’t be happening! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Ahmad Zamri and the rest of the peloton now coming very close to the three leaders while they enter the last 2 km! Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram managed to survive so far and now has a decent chance of keeping his jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat21.PNG

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot hasn’t given up hope yet and tries to win it at the right side of the road, we see GC favourites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus join the sprint as well! The best sprinters still present and going for it seem to be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Navardauskas!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat22.PNG

Is the Frenchman capable of doing something so extraordinary?! 400 m to go and he still has a lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Navardauskas!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat23.PNG

What a ride by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Vichot! He manages to hold off the two sprinters by a few bandwidths and grabs a beautiful victory! Because of the stage win and the seconds he gained in the intermediate sprints he becomes the new GC leader as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat24.PNG

The top 10 is then completed by some unexpected and GC names; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Nareklishvili, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/des.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Gougeard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Minguez Ayala, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Gonzalez Cortes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pol.png Latour.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat25.PNG

Vichot wins the stage and takes the yellow as well as the polka-dot jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat26.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat27.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s2/2cat28.PNG

Katrasnik remains in green but loses the white jersey to Errazkin.
