Volta a Catalunya - Stage 1
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat01.PNG

Welcome! It’s that time of the year again, as 144 riders are ready for the start of the Volta a Catalunya. Today’s stage is the only one where a mass sprint should be possible, but the mountain of third category close to the finish could lead to a broken peloton. Let’s see if stage favourites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Canelon manage to live up to their status.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat02.PNG

It doesn’t take long for the breakaway to form! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Munoz is the first one to attack, moments later he gets the company of teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat03.PNG

1/3rd of the race is done and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik who wins the first intermediate sprint, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Sotberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat04.PNG

The peloton is 3’ behind with 100 km to go. We see domestiques of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png MOL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Adastra doing the work for their sprinters. The maximum gap was 4’.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat05.PNG

With 50 km to go, the distance between the leading group and the peloton is 2’. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Adastra N Hell Energy Cycling know today is their day and pick up the pace. The other teams are content with this situation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat06.PNG

A little bit later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik also wins the second and last intermediate sprint, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat07.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca wants that KoM-jersey! He attacks with 11 km to go to the summit of the Alt de Collsacreu (3rd cat.). The peloton is 1’30” behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat08.PNG

The Spaniard makes sure the two riders of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans Cycling Team are left behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat09.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik still has a lot of energy however, and leaves the other two leaders behind with 7 km left to climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat10.PNG

They manage to come back with only 2.5 km left to climb though! The colourful trio has an advantage of 1’ over the peloton and 30” over the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tst.png Trans Cycling Team riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat11.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik seemed to be out of energy but managed to find his second breath and won the sprint against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca! The Slovenian will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat12.PNG

After the summit the riders descend to the finish line. With only 10 km to go the three leaders still have a 50” lead over the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Adastra still has to do all the work! Will a breakaway rider surprise everyone today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat13.PNG

The leaders enter Calella with 6 km to go and their lead is not being cut! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Canelon were at the head of the peloton, but that’s not where they should be yet! Will their teams manage to close the gap in time? It seems less likely every km!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat14.PNG

The leaders only have 3 km more to go while in the peloton the lead-out trains are finally properly forming! The difference still is 40”, surely this must be too little too late?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat15.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca leads the sprint entering the last km, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik seems to be overruling him quickly! The sprinters still have a tiny possibility at winning, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy haven’t given up hope yet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat16.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca is out, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram seems to be overtaking the Slovenian with 500m to go! The sprinters are still coming closer, who is timing his sprint the best?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat17.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram it is! The rider of Guave’s Sunlight Cycling ensures the first C1 victory for his team with only a couple of centimers over the number 2 of today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik! The Slovenian of Gjensidige Pro Cycling won two intermediate sprints though, so could maybe be the GC leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat18.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/anh.png Canelon wins the peloton sprint by a large margin, finishes third, and seems quite angry. Behind him we can see the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bak.png Gallopin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/p4e.png De Bondt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/adp.png Allonca.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat19.PNG

The other two places in the top-10 of the stage go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bgc.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mol.png Lovassy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat20.PNG

The winner of the first stage in Catalunya: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat21.PNG

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gsc.png Oram gets to wear the yellow jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/C1/Catalunyaa/s1/1cat23.PNG

Also a great ride by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gct.png Katrasnik, leading the points classification now. He's also the KoM-leader and the U-25 leader!
