Race Report, Stage 2

Stage 2 of Paris-Nice takes us 185km from Orsonville to Vierzon. The course is completely flat and is one of two opportunities for the sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Leung wears yellow but since King Power lack a top sprinter don’t look for them to be working on the front.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/favs.jpg

The day is clear with no wind. We have two sprint points coming with 117km and 18 km to go. With time bonuses both at the sprints and on the line the yellow jersey could be in play today.

The first attack see 5 riders go clear including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/01.jpg

There a few more attacks but they are shut down by Gazelle who seem to want to maintain their numerical superiority in the break. And with 10km gone this group has over 2 minutes on the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless is second in the young rider competition, 4 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/pum.png Ganna and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj is third, 5 seconds behind. Groselj is also the best sprinter in the breakaway.

With about 40k gone the lead peaks at 4’40 and then the peloton begins to work to keep it there. Tinkoff, Festina and Aegon doing the work.

118k to go, 1 km to the sprint point and the break opens up the sprint. The peloton is at 3’42.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/02.jpg

200 meters to the sprint point and they are evenly matched but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless, the nearest Gazelle rider, has ground to make up if he wants to take the time bonus while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj looks stronger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj wins it and takes a 6 second bonus and the young rider lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless grabs 3rd place as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby takes 2nd. Powless is 3 seconds behind Groselj in the white jersey competition

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/04.jpg

The peloton chases steadily and with 60km to go the lead is at 2’23. The same 3 teams working but they have added more riders. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Vorobev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Rucigaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Mavrikakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Koep and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Shalunov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/05.jpg

20k later the lead is down 1’40. Same teams working but they have added additional riders, 9 chasers now. The break is probably not going to survive.

With 26 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj makes a short-lived attack in the break. With 21km to and 3k to the sprint point the lead is 55 seconds. Looks like the break might make it to the sprint point.

Indeed they do and it is another close sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj takes it again followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj will wear white tomorrow barring something strange.

16m to go and the lead is down to 43 seconds. We also have a split in the pack, all the GC riders are in the second group but most of the sprinters are up front but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/vlv.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/mos.png Granjel Cabrera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/yor.png Bar are in the second group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/07.jpg

10km to go and the catch is made. The second group is still 51 seconds adrift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/08.jpg

Festina still working up front, since none of the GC boys are in the front group they must figure they don’t need to worry about pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier losing some time.

5km left and the 2nd group is still 36 seconds behind. UBS, Volvo and cycleYorkshire have been working to close the gap but it seems like it will be hard to get their men into position now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/09.jpg

2.2km to go and some sprint trains have formed. On the left it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Foliforov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/akm.png Anderberg, from the break, getting in the way.

On the right it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Karatzios, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss has Coquard’s wheel and behind him is: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby and a few others are trying to hold their position around the sprinters. The 2nd group isn’t going to make it back in time for the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/10.jpg

1.3 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bouglas bursts free with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard on his wheel. The French Champion is in a great position if he can hold on to the line.

Behind on the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov leads out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and on the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss tries to lead the other sprinters through the traffic of fading riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/11.jpg

800 meters for the Festina riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard hasn’t launched. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss are in the wind. Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins. And spread across the road behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby. Then the remaining sprinters in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/12.jpg

500 meters to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard hits the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss have closed on him but they have been in the wind much longer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/13.jpg

200 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard is holding his lead. Still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss just behind. Behind Goss is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen still emerging from the pack of fading riders behind that.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/14.jpg

100 meters for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard he is going to win this stage. Order behind seems to be holding, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov has edged ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss for second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard wins it, a perfect lead out from his team as they stamp their authority on this race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/ino.png Goss for second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Liepins takes fourth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/bnm.png Meyer outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen for fifth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/rak.png Hayakawa takes seventh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/isa.png Contreras takes eight. And a great 9th from the break for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Bibby. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/evo.png Stoltz takes 10th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Jakobsen, who got held up in traffic can only manage 11th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj holds on for 12th, Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Leung sprints to 13th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/gzl.png Powless and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/eav.png Pelikan close out the top 15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Bryan Coquard has earned what Festina hope will be the first of multiple stage wins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/PT/PN/S2/podium.jpg

The second group sprints home and closes the gap. The 20 second time bonus is not enough for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/fes.png Coquard to take yellow and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/kng.png Leung also gets a few points to hold the green jersey. No time gaps so King Power hold on to the team lead as well.

Only in the young rider competition do we get a change. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Micros/sct.png Groselj uses the time bonuses to take the lead.
