Time trial day in Hong Kong! Twenty-two kilometers against the clock from Sunny Bay to the Hong Kong Sports Institute, with two separate battles: one for the stage win for the pure time trialists, and the battle for the GC lead amongst the front five of yesterday. However, there are a few riders who want to ride themselves back into GC contention with the top five, GC leader Preidler especially, not that amazing on time trial bikes.
The first contender for a stage win is Gonzalez Salas, fifth from bottom in the GC and 38 minutes down. He needs 27 minutes and 50 seconds to complete the course.
A lot of good time trialists starting early today, but all fail to beat Gonzalez Salas:
Laizer second at fifteen seconds
Sterbini third at seventeen seconds
Oram fourth at eighteen seconds
Hamza fifth at twenty-three seconds
Archbold sixth at twenty-eight seconds
Marchewka eighth at thirty-two seconds
Robert only falls five seconds short of Gonzalez Salas. He is also five seconds slower than his time from last year, which saw him finish eighth.
Golovash posts the same time as Gonzalez Salas at the halfway mark, but is three seconds slower on the second part.
Dempster goes to fourth place, + 7 for the Australian.
Dumoulin is equal to Golovash at both the split and the finish line, but the milliseconds reveal he's only third.
A whopping 31 seconds is the lead for Howson at the checkpoint. He slows down a bit but is still 45 seconds faster than Gonzalez Salas at the finish line, and a serious contender for the victory.
Teammate Cornu, the Belgian Champion, comes closest of all so far, but still 42 seconds slower.
Van Niekerk comes even closer. He was only three seconds down at the intermediate but concedes twelve at the finish line for virtual second place.
Eritrean Champion Kiflay with a good performance today. He's fourth out of 66 finishers so far, + 44.
Kochetkov cannot match the Eritrean. Number nine at 57 seconds.
Mullen takes third place at both half and full distance, losing nine seconds on each half for a deficit of eighteen in total.
Pokälä goes fourth at 35 seconds...
until Nepomnyachsniy beats him by five seconds...
and Sterobo goes another nine seconds faster.
Domagalski is 49 seconds slower over the course of the 20 kilometer, and falls just outside the top ten.
Uwizeyimana is one second slower than Domagalski, and falls a place further outside the top ten. Nevertheless, decent performance from the Rwandan.
The first riders at three minutes in the GC are starting. Gallopin assumes the virtual GC lead, limiting his loss to 45 seconds for current tenth place on the stage.
Reguigui and Omarsson are second and third, but at 48 and 50 seconds to Gallopin respectively.
For complete reference, Eiking + 1'35, Topchanyuk + 1'55, Hagen + 1'56 and Pernsteiner + 3'00.
Dunbar is one of those riders who could make a nice jump in the GC. He is eighteen seconds slower than Gallopin and is currently number two.
Lienhard + 2'02 (8th), Seibeb + 2'10 (9th) to Gallopin.
Ahmad Zamri manages to post the same time as Gallopin! However, the Malaysian Champion is faster by a few milliseconds.
De Vos + 1'43 (7th).
Paillot did well yesterday to hang on to the group of favorites. His time trial today might not be his best ever, only fourth at eighteen seconds despite slipstream from Kebede (+ 1'58, 7th), but he could challenge the front five in the GC.
Bazhkou is one of the puncheurs with a decent time trial. + 1'08 to Howson places him outside the stage top 25, but fifth in the GC with 20 riders to go.
Denifl + 1'34 (8th). He needs to be unleashed on the final stage.
Cattaneo should be one of the favorites but only just cracks the stage top ten, eighth momentarily at + 38. Bar Paillot he is best-placed in the GC, but probably didn't gain as much time as he wanted.
He almost caught up to Borges who falls outside the top forty (+ 4'01), and did pass Hoem who goes to fifteenth (+ 2'24). Same time for his teammate Hoelgaard.
Light at the end of the tunnel for Faiers. 28th place, losing just over a minute, gives him a good position going into the final stage.
Light at the begin of the tunnel for Lunke, who becomes a dark horse for a good GC position. + 1'10 on the stage, provisionally eighth in the GC.
Borisavljevic takes ninth provisional, thirteen seconds behind Lunke.
Carpenter + 1'25 (12th), Chaves + 1'36 (14th), both measured to Paillot.
Izagirre posted the ninth time at the checkpoint at 23 seconds, and finishes eighth at 35 seconds. Only seventeen seconds behind Paillot makes him a contender for the overall victory.
Dyrnes + 3'16 (25th), bye bye GC.
Cort Nielsen is twelve seconds slower than Lunke, giving Tryg two riders on the edge of the GC top ten.
'
Yates limits his loss to 1'23 to Paillot, fourteenth on the leaderboard which will likely see him drop down to twentieth once everyone has finished.
Konig's seven second bonus yesterday didn't turn out to be relevant yet. He goes between the Tryg riders, tenth with only the top five left to finish.
Kelderman might be the best time trialist from the front five, but has the least advantage over the rest of the field. 29'02 is nearly two minutes slower than Howson and 66th place on the stage, but more importantly enough to take the virtual GC lead off Paillot by 47 seconds.
He has nothing to fear from Padun who finishes down in 124th at + 2'50. He does not stay ahead of Paillot but remains ahead of Izagirre by nine seconds, 53 seconds behind Kelderman.
Areruya does better than his rival for the white jersey. He'll keep that by finishing in 111th (+ 2'40), and also stays ahead of Paillot. His deficit to Kelderman is now 35 seconds.
Slagter is a tad better than the previous two, and with his bonus seconds from yesterday he has no trouble staying ahead of them. However, 95th at + 2'25 is not enough to keep Kelderman behind. A Dutch one-two at the moment, sixteen seconds separating them.
Finally, yellow jersey Preidler. He has already blown his lead to Kelderman at the halfway point, and produces one of the worst times of the day. + 3'38, 155th place out of 185, and drops back to fifth in the GC.
The stage win goes to Damien Howson in a time of 27 minutes and five seconds. Van Niekerk is twelve seconds slower in second place, Mullen third at eighteen seconds. In the same time as the Irishman is Paillot. Sterobo, Nepomnyachsniy and Pokälä finish fifth to seventh, the latter in the same time as Izagirre in eighth. Cattaneo and Cornu complete the top ten.
The new owner of the yellow jersey is Wilco Kelderman, who had the best time amongst the big five. Slagter follows his countryman at 16 seconds, with Areruya in third at 36 seconds, while remaining leader in the youth classification. Paillot makes the jump to fourth, but tomorrow's profile should not be suited to him. Preidler goes from first to fifth, with Padun now in sixth, both still within a minute of the leader. Izagirre, Cattaneo, Ahmad Zamri and Gallopin complete the top ten. The first seventeen riders are within two minutes, so everything is still to play for tomorrow.
