The Faroe Islands have three professional riders and two riders on an amateur contract. Cycling is a popular sport on the archipelago, with many local enthusiasts participating on a hilly route. The news of Netia - Vonin's disband this morning hit hard, with Nielsen and Veyhe hoping to give the team their last moment of glory.
The last local standing was caught at the foot of the penultimate climb by the group of 45, all (semi-)professionals in there. Immediately, another amateur with a fake-WCC shirt attacks.
Said amateur had to sit down, the pace slowed down and everyone behind returned. Veyhe attacks near the top of the climb.
Numerous amateurs, hired amateurs for professional teams and even the pros themselves chase, but he maintains his gap of 35 seconds as we head onto the final climb.
Dahl-Olsen, Hojgaard and Magnussen do everything they can, gapping all but Nielsen and one pesty amateur, but Veyhe is gone.
Torkil Vehye ends the chapter of Netia - Vonin by winning the Faroese Championship! Second position goes to Hojgaard, third to Dahl-Olsen, fourth to Magnussen and fifth to Nielsen.
Dahl-Olsen, Hojgaard and Magnussen are pretty even on the time trial, with both Netia riders being given no chance.
Magnussen overtakes Nielsen at the checkpoint. 1h07'41 at the finish is the reference time for the other two contenders.
Dahl-Olsen matches his time at the first checkpoint. He loses two seconds on the second part which proved to be his downfall, the same two seconds is his deficit at the finish line. He will not defend his title.
Hojgaard is beating both of them by a comfortable margin though, one minute and 34/36 seconds.
The Faroese title goes to a rider on an amateur team, but Jogvan Hojgaard deserves every bit of it!
