Alex Petersson - 2009

The Wonderkid

Breath, tramp, tramp, breath, tramp, tramp was everything I could think of when I rode my bike up the hardest mountain I ever sat my foot on. I could see two blurred white red beings ahead of me in the mountain, and I heard someone yell:
"Good jobbed Alex, ride the hardest you can up the last part!"

The last two minutes up the mountain was the longest two minutes in my whole life. Every second felt like a minute and the legs felt like they were going to break apart.
But I rode up to the top and there I was really close to fall of my bike, I was so tired. The two white red beings that I saw in the mountain in front of me, went to talk to me. One of them said:
"Oh my god, I have never seen any teenager rode up a mountain so fast as you did", and the other filled in:
"You are a wonderkid!"

Right then I felt that my legs was not carrying me anymore, and I fell to the ground.

I woke up the same day and when I opened my eyes I saw white walls, a grey TV, a brown table and two men. One of them wore a white rock and the other guy wore a ordinary T-shirt and shorts.
"Hello, so you finally woke up, started the man in the rock. My name is Sergio Gonzalez and i'm a doctor. I think that you want to now why i'm standing here and talks to you, isn't that right?"
"Yes, you are right", was the only thing I could get out of my mouth.
"Ok, you were out on a ride with your bike and when you were finished with a hard mountain you fell to the ground because of lack of fluid.
Anders your trainer drove you here and now you need to be in hospital at least over the night. I now that you are tired but I need to ask some question so I can see if your memory is hurt. Ok?"
"Ok," I answered.
"What is your name?" The doctor began.
"Alex Petersson"
"How old are you?"
"16"
"Where do you live?"
"Vaxjo, Sweden."
"Where are you right now?"
"Spain"

"Good your memory is not injured. The things that you dont remember now you are going to remember later, trust me. Now i'm going to leave you alone so you can talk with Anders."
Sergio left the room and I thought of what I was going to say to Anders. Right now I didn't knew who he was, but a thank you wouldn't be so bad to say I guessed.

"Thanks Anders, I said with the kindest voice I had.
No problem, he answered."

I didn't know more things to say, but it felt like Anders could read my minds because he said:
"Probably you don't know who I am right now and you don't know what to say so I am going to leave you alone so you can rest and sleep. See you tomorrow", he finished our conversation.

The next day I woke up early in the morning, and suddenly I remembered all the memories. It was so many things that it felt like my head was going to explode!

But after a while I felt ok again, and now I remembered who I was and what I was doing here in Spain.
I already knew my name and age, Alex Petersson, 16. I also knew that I lived in Vaxjo, but now I knew why I lived there. Me, Alex Petersson was a cyclist and as a cyclist I was sponsored by an academy in Sweden. The academy was sponsoring a few young cyclist around the long country, and I was one of them. The sponsordeal was great for me, it gave me a free apartment in Vaxjo, free travelcosts and a competitionplace (not training) in one of the Swedish top teams. For me it was Team Cykelcity.se, even though I didn't train with the team I was invited to this sixteen days long training camp in Spain, and I said yes on the spot when they asked me. This was a bonus for me because the only thing that I could demand from Cykelcity was racing, and actually I've already got the calendar for this year.

January: Training Camp, Spain.
February: Training alone in Vaxjo.
Mars: Stockholm GP
April: Varnamo GP, Gotene GP
May: Tour Of Gothenburg
June: Swedish Championships. RR and TT.
July: Rest month.
August: Scandinavian Open Road Race
September: Rest month.
October: Rest month, season over.

The sponsordeal is 2 years long or if I find a Continental Team to sign me the deal will end.

Anders the trainer who helped me to the hospital was Team Cykelcitys manager, I remembered now. His last name is Gerhardsson.
Suddenly I felt something, I remembered the time in the mountain. It was Anders who had yelled at me and it was Fredrik Ericsson and Jonas Bjelkmark in front of me in the tough mountain.

I remembered many things and after a while I started to think of my family, but I couldn't remember anything! Hopefully the part about my family will come back because that part of my memory is the most valuable.

I got the memory of my family back, but it took a while, I fought as hard as I could against my memory. When I remembered something, I suddenly remembered everything. My dad is named Ake, my mum Lotta, I have two older brothers, Dan and Niclas, and I also have an older sister, Marie. They all lives in Vaxjo but it's only me who is living with our parents.

"Knock, knock" Someone was knocking on my door. "It's Anders", said a voice behind the door.
"Come in", I answered.
"Hi, how are you?" Anders asked.
"I'm ok, I will be back in training tomorrow"
"Great, that's what I wanted to here" Said Anders and at the same time he started to smile.

The day after I was back on my Bianchi with the rest of the team.
"Good that you are back", was the first Johan Lindgren said to me. He is the guy that I spend the most time with in the team. Johan is a TT specialist and he is very kind.

The training camp went really fast, I continued to ride well in the tough mountains. It's in the mountains that I can perform best, but I'm pretty good to ride TTs and I don't have problems to ride fast in the hills and this is doing me to a good stage racer. Of course my dream is to win Le Tour de France in the future, and maybe I will succeed, who knows?

When we got home to Sweden and Arlanda (the airport just outside Stockholm) I had to say good bye to the team, because I was going home to Vaxjo while the team was going to Gothenburg.

My parents was so happy to see me back in Vaxjo, they were waiting for me at the airport.
"Hi Alex, I missed you so much." My mum said and at the same time he gave me a really big hug.
"Hi", I answered.
I was so tired that I probably could lay down on the hard floor and sleep.
On the way home to the house my parents asked a lot of questions but even if I was tired I answered all the questions, don't ask me how but it felt like it wasn't me who answered.

When we got home I just layed down in the bed for a second and suddenly I were a sleep.

February went very slow and it was really boring to train all alone in Vaxjo every day. But then the 5th of March finally came and it was time for my first race this year, Stockholm GP! The race profile was totally flat, that didn't suit me well. So therefore it wasn't a big surprise when Anders told me to try an early attack.

After 3 km the attacks began, I countered 4 other guys and we created todays breakaway. We worked very well and hard together but we couldn't escape from being cought by the peleton with 21 km left. Then I had done my job and I could just relax and take it easy to the finish line. I finished 69th out of 78 competitiors. Fredrik Ericsson, my team mate, won the race after that he attacked with 10 km left of the race and he created a gap enough to win the race.

Everybody was so happy over the win and we celebrated the whole evening. But me and Johan (Lindgren) decided to go up to our room (we are sharing room) before the other guys. I decided to check my E-mail before I went to sleep. I had got one new message, from Roy Andersson, Cykelcitys owner. Strange, I thought when I opened the mail.

From:
To:

Hi, Alex! Nice breakaway today, you perfromed well in it and worked very hard, great!
I have heard from Anders that you are a very talented cyclist and probably the most promising cyclist in the country. So therefore I want to give you a contract proposal. Please contact me as fastest as you can.

Roy.

What was that? I didn't know what to think when I had read the message. Why do they want me to sign with them when they are having a 2 year race contract with me, without even paying me something? Strange. It was only one reason I could think of, maybe they knew that another team wanted to sign me, but they do know that I will not leave them for another team in Sweden. So it must be a Pro-team. No, it must be another reason, a Pro-team don't want to sign me, if I think that, I'm just dreaming. But what reason could it be? This was a great proposal but I don't know if I want to sign with Cykelcity. I'm guaranteed 2 years of racing with this team, and before that I want to be a part of a Pro-team, so it is just stupid to sign a contract now. Because then it's harder for other teams to sign me.

I decided to go to bed and sleep and then think of it the next day. Now is not a great time to decide such a big thing. Maybe I should talk with Johan about it, but that could wait until tomorrow, now I needed some sleep. But it was hard to try to sleep now, I could just think of one thing, me in a Pro-team.

When I woke up the next day I was really tired and it felt like my legs were going to explode of pain. But when I thought of what happened to me yesterday I just smiled. I was so happy. Probably the best cycling team in Sweden wanted to sign me after just one race with them. After I had taken a shower I went down to eat breakfast with Johan.

"Yesterday I got a mail from Roy," I began when we started to eat. "He wants me to sign with Cykelcity for two years"
"That's great," Johan answered.
"Yes, but why do they want to sign me when they know that I will race with them in two years without a crown coming from their pocket? Do you think that they know something that I don't know, maybe a Pro-team has showed interest for me?" I said.
"Yes, it can be that. So maybe you should wait and sign with Cykelcity."
"Yeah, I think I will do that. I will call Roy later today."

I called Roy later on that day and told him about my decision. Of course he got dissapointed but he understood me and that was nice to here.
