Italian National Road Race Championship
Bongiorno! Not meant as favoritism towards Francesco by the way. Welcome to the Italian vineyards for their national championships on an undulating route. No Ponzi, no Ginanni though.
A breakaway of local riders is caught 12 kilometer before the line on the second-a-last climb of the day. The peloton consists of 111 riders, with Lonardi the only non-amateur rider in the second group. Lierse, Andorra, ENI and Europcar leading the way.
At the top of the climb, the peloton is split in two. Defending champion Ricco, Battaglin, Carboni, Moschella and Ciccone in this second group. As the finish line is only eight kilometer away, they are out of contention.
The final uphill stretch. On the left we have Balloni and Di Maggio for ENI. Down the middle we have the Andorra duo of Colbrelli and Zordan. Modolo helping Europcar teammate Zaini on the right. From the soloists, Villela is the first to launch, boxing in Cattaneo and Moscon. Four Festina riders on the next row.
Modolo is faster than Villela, giving Zaini the perfect position into the final 500 meters if he can pass his teammate. Zordan, Di Maggio, Palini, Caruso and Moscon on the next line, followed by Cattaneo, Bongiorno and Rabottini. A small gap behind these eleven riders.
But the strongest puncheur eventually prevails. Cesare Di Maggio is the new Italian Champion. Caruso as strongest Europcar rider in second, Palini third without support. Villela fourth, Zaini fifth, Bongiorno sixth. Moscon, Zordan, Rabottini and Modolo complete the top ten, Cattaneo eleventh out of the eleven contenders.

Italian National Time Trial Championship
Can Cattaneo defend his Italian Time Trial title?
Malori starts ahead of the other contenders. He easily takes the fastest time: three minutes and two seconds over the hour.
Senni cannot beat him, losing out by nearly two-and-a-half minutes, but goes to virtual second nevertheless.
Balloni could take another jersey to ENI, but he lost over a minute to Malori.
Dal Col comes closest to his leading teammate so far, but has to concede 29 seconds. Two Tinkoff riders will be on the podium, but in which positions?
Cattaneo is seven seconds faster at the first split, but his lead is down to four at the second. He manages to increase the lead back to six at the finish line to win!
Mattia Cattaneo gets to keep his jersey for another year!
