Herald Sun Tour - Stage 5
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/profile.jpg

The final stage is 169.5 with start in Benalla and finish at the Michelton Winery. One of Australia’s favourite wineries, and a place of escape. I have not been paid to say that. Back to the race, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Reckweg took the GC lead in yesterday's time trial, but anything can happen today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Cruz needs five bonus seconds which is theoretically possible. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Moser is only at 24 seconds, with 20 seconds going to the winner of the stage for which he is a contender. We could also see a crazy stage with a lot of gaps between groups, though the profile does not appear to lend itself to that.

The first attempt to form a breakaway failed, but the second one succeeds:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Toupalik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Dima
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Kurianov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Minoungou
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Revard

Neither pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Roberge nor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Pinot is present, though Pinot did join the first wave. With only ten points on the table, they will stay the top two. Lauk is the best rider in the GC, 42nd at 1'43.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/02.jpg

No battle at the first climb of the day: Harry's Creek Road. The points go to Lauk, Toupalik and Kurianov. The former two are now tied in fourth with nine points, one behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Sleen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/03.jpg

Toupalik "wins" the second climb ahead of Kurianov and Revard. This means Toupalik becomes third, Lauk becomes fifth, Revard becomes seventh and Kurianov becomes eighth in the mountains classification which has now been settled. The six leaders get a maximum lead of four minutes before Euskaltel, Glanbia and Azteca start chasing, giving Lauk some time to enjoy the virtual lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/04.jpg

Strangely, the riders do battle for the intermediate sprint in Euroa, which Toupalik wins ahead of Kurianov and Revard. There is another intermediate sprint fifteen kilometer before the finish line, which is where the break has to be caught before if Moser wants to win the GC. The gap is now down to 2'45 with 75 kilometer to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/05.jpg

The gap is down to just over a minute with 27 kilometer to go, meaning Lauk is virtual leader emeritus. He does not like this news and attacks, but the other five would cooperate to get him back in line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/06.jpg

This attack did lead to the group staying ahead for the intermediate sprint in Nagambie. Toupalik wins again ahead of Kurianov and Dima, meaning Reckweg is another step closer to securing his GC. With a gap of 1'20, the riders in the break are now within the safe margin for the Dane, though the sprinters will not see their final opportunity being wasted.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/07.jpg

Revard smells there might be a stage victory possible and attacks a few kilometers later with the peloton still not within the minute. Eddie Stobart has joined in the chase with the other teams who have chased all day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/08.jpg

Revard is brought back by the lead of Minoungou, who was absent for all sprints, just after the 10k banner. However, their lead is back up to 2 minutes with Lauk again in promising position. What is the peloton doing?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/09.jpg

Euskaltel now gives full gas with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Ganjkhanlou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi, cutting the gap down to 1'30 with 5 kilometer to go. The stage win might be gone but the GC can be salvaged. Strangely, Netia is only somewhat chasing with one rider, bringing Reckweg's almost certain GC win in danger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/10.jpg

However, the breakaway manages to keep the gap constant heading into the final two kilometer, led by Kurianov. Dima is only four seconds behind Lauk in the GC, including the one bonus second he picked up today, and with 20, 12 and 8 bonus seconds available at the finish, he might take the overall win if the gaps stay as they are.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/11.jpg

The break has reached the final kilometer, sprinting side-by-side. The sprinters have also woken up, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Petrie-Armstrong leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Vaquera on his wheel, the first time the Mexican participates in the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen is the lead Euskaltel rider but Moser is not on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/12.jpg

Minoungou and Toupalik go head to head for the stage victory. Dima a few bike lengths behind in third while all others have stopped sprinting. With the peloton sprinting, the gap will likely not be more than a minute, even if a gap will be awarded at all given the closing speed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Oumaru Minoungou did not care for the intermediate or mountain sprints, but wins the most important sprint of the day: the one for the stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Toupalik takes second place and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Dima third, meaning he overtakes Lauk, who finishes fourth, in the GC. It will likely not be enough for the overall victory but he might make a nice jump. Revard and Kurianov finish fifth and sixth ahead of the peloton, where Nepomnyachsniy, Yamamoto, Bennett, Moser and Vaquera are currently side-by-side for seventh place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S5/14.jpg

But with a late lunge it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff who takes seventh, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel. Yamamoto is ninth while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young completes the top ten ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi, Moser, Nepomnyachsniy, Vaquera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse, Bennett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Kamberaj and Cimolai. Reckweg finishes in 21st, one place behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi.

The gap from the lead six to the front of the peloton is 33 seconds, and the entire peloton with a few exceptions did not have any further time differences. It means Dima moved up to 24th and Lauk to 27th. Much ado about nothing in the end, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Morten Reckweg must have been nervous at some point but everything went fine. He is the winner of the 2019 Herald Sun Tour! With him on the podium are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Freddy Cruz and teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Szymon Rekita. The top ten is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Sebright, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Downey, Moser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Mihaylov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Van Baarle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Ortega.

The points classification goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Steele Von Hoff as he was the best sprinter from the peloton and thus defended his lead against Cimolai and Suryadi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Adam Roberge did not receive a challenge by Pinot for the mountains classification today, with Toupalik using his time in the break to get to third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Szymon Rekita receives the white jersey besides his overall podium, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Kukrle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Beniusis joining him on the podium here. The small gaps did not have a major influence on the teams classification either, Glanbia Foods Cycling Project being crowned winners over Netia and Euskaltel due to their domination in the time trial.
