Herald Sun Tour - Stage 3
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/profile.jpg

On the menu today: 168.5 kilometer from Bendigo to Nagambie. The stage is flat except for one category three climb, and contains three intermediate sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/01.jpg

The morning breakaway consists of four riders, the peloton keeping them within 1'30 for now:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Pedersen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Toupalik
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Mostov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/02.jpg

There is no sprint for Mia Mia, the name of the climb: Toupalik gets the points ahead of Lauk and Pedersen. None of them were a threat to current leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Roberge.

The peloton is at a minute at the top, having already caught Mostov who couldn't even keep up with the other three.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/03.jpg

The trio would be caught at orders from GCN, whose motives become clear when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Pinot attacks. However, there are no mountain points left today and he lost time yesterday, so the stage win is his only plausible objective. Lauk briefly tried to keep up but couldn't.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/04.jpg

At the intermediate sprint in Heathcote, Pinot leads by 1'30 already. The remaining points/bonus seconds go to to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett, beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/05.jpg

In Graytown, Suryadi again takes second place with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto now third. Van Poppel, Bennett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young gain nothing, while Cimolai realized too late there was a sprint. The gap to Pinot is up to three minutes minutes with 65 kilometer to go, Equinor the main team chasing with a bit of help from Glanbia and Euskaltel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/06.jpg

The final intermediate in the outskirts of Nagambie is won by Pinot, whose lead is down to 45 seconds with 25 kilometer to go. Close finish for second place between Young, Suryadi, Yamamoto and Cimolai, with the order decided as mentioned. Van Poppel and Bennett fell just short. These sprinters had closed in rapidly but drop back to let the helpers close the gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Barcelo suffered a puncture and lost contact with the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/07.jpg

Not 5 but 15 kilometer is the distance Pinot was caught, as we are in the local laps around Nagambie. Equinor still leading like they did all day, with a lot of NENT, Glanbia, Eddie Stobart and Euskaltel riders around each other. Look at these teams for the sprint trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/08.jpg

Same point a lap later, now actually five kilometer to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Conci and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Kurianov lead the group. Euskaltel and Equinor will be the teams which bring everyone to the line. Sprinters are still around 15th position tucked in behind their leadouts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Quispe leads with two kilometer to go but no train behind him. Glanbia, Equinor and Euskaltel do have trains:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen came to aid the Euskaltel train but rather disrupted it, making Moser's release more difficult. Bennett leading with a kilometer to go but this seems to early. Carsi has also lost his train and is now behind Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/11.jpg

Two Euskaltel riders sprinter apart from each other for the win, Jakobsen almost catching up to Bennett at 500 meter, with Moser fifth behind Cimolai and Rovny, who also disobeys leadout orders. Von Hoff with Nepomnyachsniy, Cisse and Van Poppel alongside him at some distance already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/12.jpg

Moser is the stronger of the two Euskaltels as he is gaining ground and Jakobsen losing. Cimolai now alongside Bennett with 200 to go but don't rule out Moser or Rovny. The sprint for probably sixth is also close, still led by Von Hoff ever so slightly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/13.jpg

Photo finish between the two Italians, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Davide Cimolai wins for Eddie Stobart! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Moser will have a good word with Jakobsen regarding the latter's behavior. The podium is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Rovny, which might make Equinor wonder if they focused on the wrong man.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S3/14.jpg

Von Hoff picking up no bonus seconds in fourth, ahead of Van Poppel and Nepomnyachsniy. Bennett seventh, Kamberaj eighth in white, Cisse ninth and Young tenth. Suryadi eleventh with Carsi only twelfth, Yamamoto thirteenth and Jakobsen fourteenth, showing Euskaltel was right to focus on Moser and his actions were very disrespectful.

With the twenty bonus seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai takes the yellow jersey and leads heading into tomorrow's time trial. Von Hoff and Suryadi are second and third at ten seconds, Moser and Nepomnyachsniy fourth and fifth at fifteen seconds. Most time trialists are a minute down on Cimolai, which shouldn't be a problem as the Italian is not the greatest against the clock.

Von Hoff will wear green tomorrow for the first time, with the polka dot still to Roberge. Kamberaj hangs on to white and Equinor continuing to lead the teams classification.
