Herald Sun Tour - Stage 2
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/profile.jpg

The second stage takes the riders from Mount Macedon to Bendigo. There are two mountain sprints of the second category, including one quite early in the stage, but the run into Bendigo is flat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/01.jpg

Four riders attack early:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Puccioni
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Sleen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Roberge

Roberge took the jersey by accident yesterday, nice to see he wants to defend it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/02.jpg

Five more riders join at the foot of the climb, also called Mount Macedon:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Pinot
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Ruiz
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Revard
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Erdenesuren
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Habtemichael

Pinot is obviously the best climber. McCormick represented with three riders, but no participation from Bianchi today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/03.jpg

And as expected, Pinot indeed wins and takes ten point by a huge margin. Roberge finishes second for eight points at 50 seconds. Brown third, Sleen fourth, Puccioni fifth and Revard sixth right behind him for six, four, two and zero points. The other riders who tried to be in the break have been caught by the peloton again.

Pinot waits for them at the bottom of the climb, so the break of now six riders continues. A small group of riders in the peloton got in trouble, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Szalontay, but they got back to the peloton shortly after the downhill as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/04.jpg

Pinot also wins the intermediate sprint in Kyneton ahead of Brown and Puccioni. The lead is three minutes with 110 to go. The next climb, again of the second category, is in forty kilometer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/05.jpg

Roberge did well by sticking to Pinot's wheel until the final 500 meters. With Pinot taking another ten points and Roberge eight, the Canadian still leads the classification by two points. Together they had gapped the rest of the break by a minute already. Sleen took third ahead of Revard and Brown, with Puccioni dropping on the climb and already back in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/06.jpg

At 50 kilometer, the peloton led by Netia, OMV, Euskaltel, Equinor and Glanbia already picks up all riders of the break except Pinot, who still leads by one minute and thirty seconds. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Zhyhunou has lost contact with the peloton on the climb and would finish twenty minutes down in the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/07.jpg

One versus 126 is very unfair, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Mostov attacked to keep Pinot company, but he was already within 30 seconds with 40 kilometer to go. Once the American caught up, the rest of the group did as well, ending the breakaway definitively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/08.jpg

Fire riders care for the intermediate sprint in Lockwood South. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett the order. Despite a decent gap over the peloton, they dropped back and head towards an ordinary sprint in Bendigo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Quicibal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png De Clercq lead with five kilometer to go, followed by the Glanbia train of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Clarke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Downey for Bennett joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Kangangi and yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff. Euskaltel builds a rival train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Robert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Moser hosting all the other sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/10.jpg

With two kilometer to go we have the same situation as yesterday, except it is clearly visible this time: the sprinters get a gap over the peloton which will might end up in more time loss. The current situation has two trains, Euskaltel versus Equnior, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Zingle moving off the front:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Rovny
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi
on the left,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Castrillo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Moser
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai
on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse trying to find the right train (as in correct, not direction).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/11.jpg

Carsi released under the kite, going left of Rovny while Moser is going to the right of him after abandoning Castrillo. Von Hoff behind them battling with Young for position. Van Poppel and co joined at the back of the group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Reckweg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Kamberaj leading the sprint in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/12.jpg

The Turkish champion has a problem as he slows down rapidly. Von Hoff now alongside Moser with Young, Cimolai and Bennett behind them. Suryadi in the green jersey moving up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/13.jpg

Three wide with Cimolai, Von Hoff and Young 300 meter from the line. Moser fell back a bit, battling with Suryadi, Nepomnyachsniy, Van Poppel and Yamamoto for fourth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/14.jpg

Nepomnyachsniy makes it four wide close to the line, Cisse suddenly with a lot of pace with Suryadi also not out of contention for the win yet. Photo finish incoming, Cimolai having the slight edge at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S2/15.jpg

But with the best bike push, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Alexandr Nepomnyachsniy takes the second stage of the Herald Sun Tour! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai finishes in P2 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young third. Yesterday's winner Von Hoff finishes fourth ahead of Cisse and Suryadi. The top ten is completed by Van Poppel, Yamamoto, Moser and Rovny. Bennett fell back to fourteenth while Carsi finishes in eighteenth.

Unlike yesterday, the peloton is given the same time as the front, and only a few tired riders dropped off at the back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff remains leader with Nepomnyachsniy moving up to second at four seconds due to bonus seconds. Third place is a tie between Suryadi, Young and Cimolai at ten seconds. The points classification is also led by the Australian but the jersey will remain on Suryadi's shoulders one more stage. The other classifications remain unchanged as well.
