Herald Sun Tour - Stage 1
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/profile.jpg

The first stage is 124.2 kilometer long and takes the riders from Geelong, site of last year's World Championships, to Ballarat. The weather is very bad with rain expected for the duration of the stage, with visibility also being quite low due to fog.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/01.jpg

The breakaway consists of three riders from Bianchi and two from McCormick. It seems both managers had a conversation before the stage:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Evans
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Strakhov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Brown
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Hoehn

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Barcelo also tried to join to make it 4-2, but as he had pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Lejman with him, it would have ruined the strategy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/02.jpg

The intermediate sprint in Anakie is won by Lauk ahead of Brown and Strakhov. The gap has not gone over two minutes yet. Eddie Stobart, Centovalli, Tryg, BNZ, Glanbia, Netia, Euskaltel, OMV, Azteca and CYBEX all with at least one rider in the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/03.jpg

There is a mountain sprint in two kilometer but the gap is down to 30 seconds, which might invite attacks from the peloton for the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/04.jpg

Lauk attacked from the break, but is caught one kilometer before top. The others had been caught before, leaving the battle for the only mountain sprint of the day wide open.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Roberge takes the six points at Brisbane Ranges not because he wanted them but because he happened to lead the peloton at the time. Four and two points went to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Gorecki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Lovik, which is also the order in the mountains classification after the stage. It remains to be seen if we get another break, it is fifty kilometer to the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/06.jpg

As the fog settles in, the final intermediate sprint is a warm up for the actual sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young wins in Mount Egerton ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai on the right impeded by the motorcycles. No break has been formed and with only thirty kilometer remaining, it is unlikely one will be formed now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/07.jpg

A small hill with ten kilometer to go catches out some riders. Bianchi is trying to bring them back, but the biggest names behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Geschke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Kruopis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Andersson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Kangangi leads the peloton of 93 riders into the final 5 kilometer, with the gap to the second group being 1'30. The lead sprinters are still in 20th-30th position but sprint trains are slowly being assembled. The sprint is slightly uphill but not steep enough to favor other types of riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/09.jpg

Heading into the deep fog with three kilometer to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Zingle leads and has a small gap. Glanbia has a train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Petrie-Armstrong and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett from which most other sprinters try to benefit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Rovny was behind Zingle but lost his wheel, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel and Suryadi behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/10.jpg

Visibility is terrible but Zingle is caught under the flag. The sprinters decide to form a queue:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Rovny
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/epc.png Carsi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nrh.png Van Poppel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Moser
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Szalontay
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cisse
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Von Hoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Cimolai
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Young
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Yamamoto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Nepomnyachsniy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/nvo.png Reckweg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Kamberaj was a bit further down, but is now trying to join as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Vaquera not getting involved today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/11.jpg

Carsi takes the lead. The riders should be 500 meters from the finish but the line is not visible from here. Van Poppel and Moser coming alonsgide him with the latter having more speed. Bennett and Suryadi slightly behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/12.jpg

At 300 meters the line finally becomes visible. Moser and Suryadi alongside each other, Cisse and Bennett passing Van Poppel. Von Hoff on the right finally with some free air and might contest for the win as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C2HC/Herald/S1/13.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Steele Von Hoff wins the first stage, and takes the yellow jersey in his home country! The podium is completed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Suryadi, who will wear green tomorrow, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Moser. Cisse fourth ahead of Van Poppel. Young, Yamamoto, Bennett and Cimolai. Carsi falling down to tenth with Kamberaj eleventh as best rider under 25. Szalontay twelfth, Nepomnyachsniy thirteenth, Rovny fourteenth and Reckweg fifteenth. Leadouts pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ptm.png Mihaylov and Zingle take sixteenth and seventeenth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen wins the sprint of the riders out of the queue for eighteenth, but there is also a time gap awarded of 27 seconds. I have to trust the juries on this, with the fog it was very difficult to see. The sprinters will definitely like this, as it gives them a better chance of the general classification. Because Equinor has three riders ahead of the split, they lead the teams classification.

The group which was dropped earlier finished at two minutes, but the riders in there were most likely irrelevant for the GC anyway.
