Welcome to Lugano for one half of the HC hilly classic double header. The field is undoubtedly weaker here than in Italy, but who will take the win?

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/2.jpg

Three riders form our break today: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Petelin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Lasca and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Suaza. They reach the foot of our first climb, Mont Raimeux (4.8km at 7.1%) with 141km to go leading the pack by 3’27.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/3.jpg

The pack refuses to let them get too far ahead, and they start the Sur le Croix with 86km to go with a 2’32 advantage.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Lasca is dropped on the climb, and with 80km to go trails pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Suaza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Petelin by 28 seconds, with the pack at 3’01.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Suaza does most of the work up front, and with 47km to go he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Petelin have a lead of 51 seconds to a group of mid-stage attackers, and 1’55 to the pack.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/6.jpg

The chasing trio as we start the Route de Varieu (2.9km at 5.7%) with 47km to go are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Freuler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Cerny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder. Behind the pack is down to 53 riders, with Muhlberger the strongest puncheur dropped so far.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/7.jpg

The front two groups combine with 44km to go, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Freuler rides ahead solo. He has 14 seconds to the quartet behind, and 59 seconds to the peloton - which has grown back to 146 riders.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/8.jpg

On the long descent the front five come back together, and they reach the start of the penultimate climb with 22km to go leading the pack by 45 seconds. 139 riders remain in the peloton, showing how slow the pace has been.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/9.jpg

As we crest the climb with 20km to go the break is swept up, and we get a split!

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/10.jpg

Caught on the wrong side of this split are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Pellaud, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda amongst others. 32 riders remain up front, but the gap is only 29 seconds so this group may make it back.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/11.jpg

But the pace is too high up front, and as we start the final climb with 9.5km to go the gap is 30 seconds. In the front group we still have 32 riders:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Silva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Mutsumine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Froome, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Goh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Vogt

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello sets the pace going up the climb, but we don’t see any attacks! With 6km to go we still have 29 riders in the front group, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png van Zyl riding across and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Freuler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Brynjolfsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Omarsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Froome dropping back into the chasing group 25 seconds behind.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/13.jpg

But no one is willing to push the pace, and we reach the bottom of the descent with 3km to go with 54 riders in the leading group, as those dropped on the climb make it back.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier is the first to make his move, launching his sprint as we reach the Flamme Rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kinoshita look the best positioned of the favourites, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Bellis and [pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Bilbao not far behind.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/15.jpg

But no one seems to be able to match pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier’s acceleration, and he has a comfortable lead as we reach 500m to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Silva are leading the chase, but have they left it too late?

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/16.jpg

It proves that way, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier takes the win!

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges wins the sprint for 2nd, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Silva.

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/18.jpg

www.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Lugano/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Mutsumine takes 11th, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello, making this a great day for Rakuten, Delvaux and Berg, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Henao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Quevedo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Paulus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Dyrnes complete the top 20.
