Welcome to Lugano for one half of the HC hilly classic double header. The field is undoubtedly weaker here than in Italy, but who will take the win?
Three riders form our break today: Petelin, Lasca and Suaza. They reach the foot of our first climb, Mont Raimeux (4.8km at 7.1%) with 141km to go leading the pack by 3’27.
The pack refuses to let them get too far ahead, and they start the Sur le Croix with 86km to go with a 2’32 advantage.
Lasca is dropped on the climb, and with 80km to go trails Suaza and Petelin by 28 seconds, with the pack at 3’01.
Suaza does most of the work up front, and with 47km to go he and Petelin have a lead of 51 seconds to a group of mid-stage attackers, and 1’55 to the pack.
The chasing trio as we start the Route de Varieu (2.9km at 5.7%) with 47km to go are Freuler, Cerny and Kreder. Behind the pack is down to 53 riders, with Muhlberger the strongest puncheur dropped so far.
The front two groups combine with 44km to go, and Freuler rides ahead solo. He has 14 seconds to the quartet behind, and 59 seconds to the peloton - which has grown back to 146 riders.
On the long descent the front five come back together, and they reach the start of the penultimate climb with 22km to go leading the pack by 45 seconds. 139 riders remain in the peloton, showing how slow the pace has been.
As we crest the climb with 20km to go the break is swept up, and we get a split!
Caught on the wrong side of this split are Serry, Ben Nasser, Pellaud, Zakarin and Sepulveda amongst others. 32 riders remain up front, but the gap is only 29 seconds so this group may make it back.
But the pace is too high up front, and as we start the final climb with 9.5km to go the gap is 30 seconds. In the front group we still have 32 riders:
Silva, Mutsumine, Froome, Kinoshita
Goh, Borges
Chiarello, Roglic, Vogt
Brynjolfsson, Omarsson, Paajanen, Gautier
Kreder, Christensen, Van der Haar, Schreurs
Slagter
Paulus, Gebrezgabihier
Bilbao
Honkisz, Zaini, Calmejane
Bellis
Dyrnes, Venter
Quevedo
Dowsett, Barrio
Kreder
Freuler
Chiarello sets the pace going up the climb, but we don’t see any attacks! With 6km to go we still have 29 riders in the front group, with Bratashcuk and van Zyl riding across and Freuler, Kreder, Brynjolfsson, Omarsson and Froome dropping back into the chasing group 25 seconds behind.
But no one is willing to push the pace, and we reach the bottom of the descent with 3km to go with 54 riders in the leading group, as those dropped on the climb make it back.
Gautier is the first to make his move, launching his sprint as we reach the Flamme Rouge. Vogt, Borges, Roglic, Schreurs and Kinoshita look the best positioned of the favourites, with Bellis and [ Bilbao not far behind.
But no one seems to be able to match Gautier’s acceleration, and he has a comfortable lead as we reach 500m to go! Borges, Roglic and Silva are leading the chase, but have they left it too late?
It proves that way, as Gautier takes the win!
Borges wins the sprint for 2nd, ahead of Roglic and Silva.
Bellis takes 5th, narrowly ahead of Schreurs, Kinoshita, Kreder, [ Bilbao and Van der Haar.
Mutsumine takes 11th, ahead of Vogt, Dowsett and Chiarello, making this a great day for Rakuten, Delvaux and Berg, while Henao, Zaini, Christensen, Quevedo, Paulus and Dyrnes complete the top 20.
