The race finishes in Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. The stage is flat, which will likely not cause any changes at the top of the GC. The main priority for the sprinters will be catching the breakaway, as they have seen two of their previous changes ruined by them.
Five riders took for a, what they hope will be long, adventure:
Wirtgen
Marzuki
Puccio
Roosen
Lampaert
They wouldn't be the only ones with this idea, five riders counter:
Ghyselinck
Barbero
Sulimov
Fiedler
Katrasnik
Sulimov is three points behind Benoot for the KoM, with the first of four category three climbs today coming up shortly.
The peloton, or more specifically Fablok, is not happy with Sulimov. The break is almost caught at the foot of the Côte de Mont Alban, but Sulimov is at the front and starts the climb with an advantage.
Sulimov does his task and takes six points to put him in the virtual lead, Wirtgen second and Marzuki third taking the remaining points away. There is another climb in a few kilometers. The peloton let down the gas a bit, not catching the breakaway right after the climb.
The breakaway still had a marginal gap of 30 seconds at the Côte de l'Escalette. Sulimov drops off, as he has enough points. Wirtgen, Marzuki and Puccio take the six, four and two points, but no one from the breakaway can overtake Sulimov. Once Sulimov was gone, the breakaway got a lead of a minute which they hadn't had so far. The intermediate sprint went to Ghyselinck without battle.
The climb also caused a split in the peloton: Wisniowski and Bewley in the front group, but many others high ranked riders and sprinters in the peloton. This was obviously accidental so the order is restored quickly.
The peloton changed its mind and has closed in to 35 seconds again. This is the finish line but not the finish of the race, we ride many laps around Lessines. Podium Ambition, Grieg, Puma, Festina and Farfetch the chasing teams.
A few kilometer later it is over, the breakaway is no more. We still have 95 kilometer to cover, more than half the stage. Are there any riders interested in another breakaway attempt?
As the rains has started to come down for the first time this race, Predatsch is the first to go again. A solo of 75 kilometer?
20 kilometer later, back at the top of the Côte de Mont Alban, he has a lead of two minutes. From what we can see of the peloton, a few riders are attacking for the mountain points.
De Souza and Lane are the riders in question, and finish in that order. De Souza has now assembled 26 points but cannot overtake Sulimov, at best he can finish second. Lane with 24 can at most get third. However, they both allow themselves to be caught again, even though the next climb is only a few kilometer away and they were halfway to catching Predatsch.
Predatsch continues to lead solo over the Côde de l'Escalette. Lane attacked to take second place, but Sulimov right behind him to secure the jersey. No attempt from De Souza this time, or from Benoot to retake the jersey. As this is the final categorized climb of the race, we know the final mountains classification provided everyone finishes inside the time limit, which shouldn't be a problem. Sulimov wins with 37 points, ahead of Benoot with 32, Summerhill with 29, Riesebeek and Lane with 28, and De Souza with 26.
This duo does decide to join Predatsch, and lead by 1'15 with 35 to go. Sulimov wins the intermediate sprint ahead of Predatsch and Lane.
Sulimov then attacks with 30 to go, a long way for a solo attempt with the peloton at a minute already.
Predatsch and Lane are caught swiftly, Sumilov maintaining the minute. The chase is mainly done by Farfetch with Festina, Podium Ambition and Puma ready to help. The gap is kept at just over a minute for now, they do not want to catch Sulimov too early and risk more attacks.
Fiedler did not get the memo and has no trouble riding towards Sumilov. The duo leads by 40 seconds, twenty kilometers to the finish line.
However, they are caught just before the last intermediate sprint heading into the final ten kilometer. Gastauer attacks and was first to cross the line for the sprint, but the sprinters team would not have any of it.
Five kilometer and Altur leads the peloton, followed by Kortsidakis and Gogl. The sprinters have made it to the front positions already, with Bewley the notable exception. Bonus seconds could not see him pass Wisniowski, so this is his way of admitting defeat.
A good look at the sprint trains for the only battle for the stage win:
Altur Van den Berg Thomas Kortsidakis Lander Petit Zhupa Matthews Van der Sanden Edmondson Daniel Keukeleire Van Heerden Theuns Hsu
The trains pretty much didn't work and everything got distorted. Edmondson and Daniel lead into the final kilometer, followed by Keukeleire and Van der Sanden. Zhupa still stuck behind Lander. Van Heerden, Petit, Harrison and Theuns need to make up ground in the final kilometer.
The Podium Ambition riders and Van der Sanden fell away, but Daniel still leads with 500 meters to go. His team leader Petit now on his wheel, battling against Van Heerden. Harrison on Petit's wheel with Dakteris alongside him, Lander still leading out Zhupa.
Daniel moves aside for Petit who has the edge over Van Heerden, but might have to worry about Harrison beating him from the slipstream. Lander is much stronger than Zhupa and tries to pass Van Heerden together with Dakteris.
But nobody can catch Adrien Petit! He wins the final stage in the only bunch sprint of the race. Lander with a strong sprint in second, what could have been if Zhupa led him out instead of the other way around.
Photo finish for third, but Van der Sanden with a strong final 100 meters takes it ahead of Hsu, Theuns and Harrison. Van Heerden seventh, Dakteris eighth, Clarke ninth and Keukeleire tenth.
Lukasz Wisniowski finishes a few places behind Bewley, but not in the bonus seconds and no time gaps awarded in the entire peloton. That means the Pole can now fully pop the champagne, he is the winner of the Tour of Northern Europe! The New Zealander could not prolong his title, instead finishing second at 2'37. Summerhill defends his third place by thirteen seconds over Boom, who could not replicate his 2017 victory. The American also takes the points classification due to his performances in the first half of the race. Oliveira finishes fifth for Generali, the winners of the teams classification, ahead of Kruijswijk. Had Theuns finished third in the photo finish, he would have overtaken Walsleben on bonus seconds, but now they finish eighth and seventh respectively. The top ten is completed by Kung and the winner of the youth classification: Per.
