Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 6
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/profile.jpg

The sixth stage is flat rated, but by no means flat. The finish is slightly uphill, which will make for an interesting sprint if we get there. For the GC contenders it will be a nice day to rest, with the decisive stage coming up tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/01.jpg

The morning breakaway is formed in two waves, first six and then another eight riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kaislavuo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Sulimov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Teunissen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Predatsch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Ariesen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png De Gendt

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/02.jpg

Many teams not happy with this composition, even though Ariesen as best ranked rider is nineteen minutes down. It is viciously chased by Festina, Podium Ambition, Indosat, Fablok and Grieg, which even caused a small split in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/03.jpg

Delgerbayar wins the only mountain sprint, a category four soon into the stage. Sulimov takes second and Burghardt third, but this has little impact on the overall classification. The peloton is at 40 seconds, still not satisfied.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/04.jpg

The head of the peloton rode so fast, that they got a gap on a short climb. Since they were so close to the break, they are now in it:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Barbero
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Arissol
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Mas
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Monk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Altur
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kortsidakis

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/05.jpg

Kortsidakis and Altur dropped back, but another group of six got clear of the peloton, whether accidental or not:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Marzuki
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Schreurs
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Sagiv
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Svab
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Gastauer
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Kaczmarek

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/06.jpg

Whatever team did not have rider at the front chased, and everything is back together with 120 kilometer to go. The first 55 kilometer were for nothing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/07.jpg

It took 20 kilometer, but we have a renewed attempt ignited by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Vanmarcke. Two riders follow: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Fritsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Ganna.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/08.jpg

Vanmarcke is not keen on the help though, as he leads the duo by a minute at the intermediate sprint. He has 2'30 over the peloton, so this attempt will be successful. There were no further counter-attempts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/09.jpg

Eventually the three decide they are better off together. Their lead is four minutes with 80 to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Bakari was the only rider who had dropped from the peloton in the early phase of the race and hasn't made it back yet, another day in company of the broom wagon for the legend.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/10.jpg

Grieg, by virtue of having pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski in yellow, is the only team doing something at the front of the peloton. Vanmarcke is 45th in the GC at 19 minutes, so he is not an immediate threat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/11.jpg

Ganna is gifted the second of three intermediate sprints, ahead of Vanmarcke and Fritsch. Their lead is five minutes as the kilometers go down, still no other team than Grieg leading the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/12.jpg

Eventually some other teams make an appearance at the front, like Indosat, Bennelong and Moser, but it is still Grieg doing the bulk of the work. They have no incentive to go full gas, so the gap is up to 7'30 with 40 kilometer to go. Another opportunity for the sprinters down the drain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/13.jpg

The final intermediate is an accidental photo finish between Ganna and Vanmarcke, but the juries give it to the Belgian. They have already crossed the finish line once, but travel another lap around the anonymous arrival city. With twenty-five kilometer to go the lead is nine minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/14.jpg

Fritsch does not fancy his chances in a sprint, attacking at seventeen kilometer when the gap has reached double digits.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/15.jpg

It is Ganna who brings everything back together four kilometer later, Vanmarcke in his wheel the whole time. A ten-minute gain would see Vanmarcke entering the GC top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/16.jpg

Fritsch is not one to give up easily, he attacks again a few kilometers later on the roundabout. Ganna has to clean up the mess again with Vanmarcke saving energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/17.jpg

Vanmarcke does eventually make a move, he attacks after Ganna brought him closer to Fritsch. The Luxembourgian has no answer as the Belgian flies past him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/18.jpg

Five kilometer, the gap between Vanmarcke and Fritsch/Ganna is 20 seconds. Fritsch leading the chase with Ganna on his wheel but refusing to help, as punishment for his earlier two attacks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/19.jpg

The gap is constant as the leaders have two kilometer left, the start of a slight uphill section. Ganna has taken over from Fritsch, realizing his petty games might cost him the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/20.jpg

Meanwhile, the peloton still has nine kilometer to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Cataford increases the pace and splits the group in a 58-rider lead group. The entire GC top 14 is in, as well as many sprinters, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Senechal out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Sep Vanmarcke doesn't need a sprint, he extended his lead to 30 seconds and wins the stage!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Fritsch has energy to sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Ganna doesn't. That settles the battle for second. Now it's waiting for the peloton, which has closed in to eight minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/23.jpg

Podium Ambition with a sprint train: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Edmondson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Van Heerden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Theuns try to follow them. Indosat building train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Kristoff but they are further back, as is Festina for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Petit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Bewley is too far back to sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/24.jpg

Edmondson lost the wheel of Matthews, Indosat is now the main train with every other sprinter lining up behind Kristoff. Petit with a rivaling train on the left but they need to start moving forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/25.jpg

The small climb heading into the final kilometer brought trouble to some. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Van Avermaet leads but not as leadout, Kristoff sprinting behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Daniel who has taken the reigns for Festina as Petit lost a lot of ground. Edmondson and Keukeleire still together, Van Heerden also with a gap to the main group led by Harrison.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/26.jpg

Kristoff and Daniel leading into the final kilometer, Petit recovered while Podium Ambition failed to do a proper leadout. Harrison with Theuns passing Van Heerden on their way to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/27.jpg

Kristoff and Petit now alongside each other, but all the other sprinters have more pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PT/ToNE/S6/28.jpg

It is Theuns who finishes fourth ahead of Keukeleire. Kristoff and Petit take sixth and seventh, with Harrison, Daniel and Van Heerden completing the top ten. Despite the gaps occurring on the final climb, the entire peloton is given the same time, including group Senechal which had lost contact earlier. Only Bakari loses more than 7'48.

The yellow jersey remains unchanged, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Wisniowski with 2'53 over Bewley. Vanmarcke has moved up to eleventh at 11'04. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill still leads the points and mountains classification, with no change in the youth and teams classification as well with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Per and Generali still leading.
