For some reason we move the south of France, which you can hardly call Northern Europe, unless my topography is outdated. Anyway, we have a flat stage with some minor climbing, but we expect the sprinters to battle at the end.
The first two attackers of the race are Phelan and Nooytens. There is a mountain sprint only eight kilometer into the stage, so we expect more attacks before that.
At the foot of the Col de Gassin we have five leaders:
Phelan
Sanogo
Oelerich
Boros
Nooytens
Ariesen trying to bridge the gap, the peloton led by Andorra at a minute.
Oelerich wins the category four sprint and receives five points. Sanogo takes three and Phelan takes one, Boros left empty handed. Nooytens did not participate in the sprint and Ariesen is now further down, though both would return/join after the downhill.
The peloton keeps the break within 1'30 for the next kilometers, Repsol and Andorra mainly chasing. We've reached the early slopes of the Col de la Garde Freinet, six kilometer until the sprint. Ariesen and Nooytens are dropped again.
The break splits up further as Oelerich drops off first, followed by Sanogo who cannot keep up with Phelan and Boros anymore. Bakari is the first and so far only rider in trouble at the back of the peloton.
Sanogo managed to fight back, but the peloton has closed in to 30 seconds of the leaders. Summerhill attacks with two kilometer to the top.
Summerhill flies past and takes six points on this category three climb. Boros and Sanogo take four and two points, Phelan none. The American thereby leading the virtual mountains classification by a singular point over Sanogo and former breakaway member Oelerich, with Boros two points down and Phelan five. We still have a category three and four climb later in the stage.
The four regroup, and finally get room from the peloton. The gap is three minutes with 90 kilometer to go as Boros wins the first of three intermediate sprints ahead of Sanogo and Summerhill. Boros is also the virtual GC leader now, as he is only 2'19 behind Dunne in the GC.
Three minutes is the limit for the peloton. Indosat leads the chase together with Podium Ambition, Festina, Generali, Aegon, Puma and Gazelle. These teams all have sprinters or riders high up in the GC, and do not want to make a fool of themselves today.
Close finish at the category four Côte du Revest, but Summerhill once again takes the maximum points available. Sanogo settles for three and Phelan doubles his overall tally to two, while Boros held back. Only Sanogo can keep Summerhill from the polka dots. The peloton has closed in to two minutes with 60 kilometer to go.
Summerhill Boros Sanogo the order at the second intermediate sprint, Phelan not involved. Indosat and Podium Ambition leading with multiple riders, but the gap is still the same as it was twenty kilometer ago. In twenty kilometer we have another climb, after which it is flat to the finish.
The final climb is the category three Col du Bougnon, where Summerhill makes it past Boros and Phelan to confirm himself as first leader in the mountain classification. Sanogo struggled on this climb and took no points, meaning he is joint second with Boros at eight points.
No one from the peloton willing to lunge on the climb, twenty kilometer flat to the finish line. Festina took control with Kortsidakis and Rabottini, then Gazelle with Teunissen and Bibby. The gap is 1'40, with Bakari at 15 minutes well inside the time limit.
Phelan rejoins Summerhill but Boros can't, and Sanogo is even further down the road. Fourteen kilometer to go and the gap has gone back up to 2'30 with the peloton now led by Moulingui and Van Hooydonck, we might be in for a surprise breakaway victory.
Summerhill sprints for the final intermediate sprint at ten kilometer from the finish line, Phelan does not. There is a new gap between them. No sight of the peloton, Boros and Sanogo still in between them.
Puma takes the lead with Sagiv, but the gap to Sanogo is already two minutes, and 3'30 to the front. Summerhill is at 2'54 in the GC disregarding bonus seconds, so Puma should do everything to defend the yellow jersey.
Five kilometer to go for Summerhill, who extends his gap to Phelan to 30 seconds and Boros to a minute. The peloton is only a minor blip in the background.
Sanogo is passed by peloton. Juarez leading out Harrison, Krasnov leading out Kristoff, Theuns and Hsu with them. Many other sprinters still far back, not interested in a sprint for the minor positions...
...as Danny Summerhill wins the stage! Andorra showing why they deserved the wildcard. He already has the points and mountains jersey in his pocket, but will he take the leader's jersey as well? For that, the peloton needs to finish at more than 2'30 roughly.
Second place to Phelan, who conceded by not sprinting against Summerhill for the final intermediate. Yet, he holds off the peloton and could also make a nice jump in the GC.
Boros takes third, finishing 1'18 behind Summerhill. The peloton is not that far behind, Harrison with a huge lead over Hsu, Van Heerden and Dakteris as next-best sprinters.
Harrison indeed finishes in fourth, with Dakteris taking fifth by a small gap over the peloton. Cataford and Matthews take sixth and seventh for Podium Ambition out of nowhere, with Hsu eighth. Juarez and Van Heerden complete the top ten with Kristoff in eleventh and Theuns twelfth. Bewley and Petit not involved, finishing 41st and 79th respectively.
The jury decides that Harrison is given the same time as Boros, Dakteris is given the same time as Harrison and the peloton is given the same time as Harrison, hence the entire peloton finishes at 1'18. This is not enough for Summerhill to take yellow, it only elevates him to 33rd. If he had taken the yellow jersey had gaps been awarded between Boros, Harrison, Dakteris and the peloton remains a mystery, it would have been very close regardless.
It does not mean there is no action in the general classification, as the highest finisher from Puma will become the leader. As Cavagna lost a few seconds yesterday, the jersey goes to the second-best finisher: Janvier Hadi. Meiler is still the owner of the white jersey and second in the GC, while Dunne drops down to third.
