Euskal Bizikleta
After the GP Cyclistes last month, we return to C2HC action with the Euskal Bizikleta, a 4 day stage race for the puncheurs in the Basque Country. Taking place slightly later in September than planned due to emergency road widening work on the final stage, this could be a huge race in the CT fight for promotion.
The puncheurs present are headlined by a number of riders who have tasted success recently in Costa, Chaves and Edmondson, as well as reigning champion Meyer and Bystrom. With the final stage likely to favour those who go well in the mountains, Siskevicius and Hoelgaard are also ones to watch, with the latter having been in fine form this season.
The Puncheurs
| HIL | MO | STA | RES | ACC | Edmondson | 79 | 69 | 75 | 72 | 76 | Bystrom | 79 | 68 | 75 | 72 | 76 | Meyer | 79 | 69 | 74 | 71 | 77 | Chaves | 79 | 76 | 74 | 73 | 72 | Costa | 79 | 70 | 71 | 70 | 70 | Siskevicius | 78 | 73 | 73 | 72 | 75 | Roux | 78 | 65 | 78 | 71 | 75 | Hoelgaard | 77 | 74 | 72 | 72 | 74 | Villella | 77 | 65 | 72 | 74 | 80 | Zingle | 77 | 69 | 74 | 69 | 76 | Teklit | 77 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 70 | Diggle | 77 | 65 | 74 | 70 | 70 | Pellaud | 77 | 65 | 74 | 68 | 70 | Besada | 77 | 63 | 74 | 74 | 77 | Lejman | 77 | 65 | 72 | 64 | 68 |
However, with the amount of climbing on the route and the difficult summit finish on Stage 4, the climbers will fancy their chances. Diaz, Giogieri and Potocki are perhaps the key riders to watch, as well as strong climber-puncheur hybrids such as Zoidl, Fernandez and Bugge.
The Climbers
| HIL | MO | STA | RES | ACC | Diaz | 70 | 78 | 69 | 73 | 68 | Giogieri | 73 | 78 | 71 | 74 | 67 | Potocki | 72 | 77 | 74 | 71 | 64 | Alizadeh | 72 | 76 | 73 | 67 | 70 | Zoidl | 74 | 75 | 71 | 68 | 69 | Fernandez | 75 | 75 | 72 | 69 | 66 | Pirazzi | 73 | 75 | 69 | 68 | 76 | Hardy | 73 | 75 | 73 | 68 | 70 | Bugge | 75 | 74 | 73 | 74 | 72 | De Clercq | 72 | 74 | 70 | 69 | 70 |
It's also worth mentioning the sprinters present, with the organisers advertising the first two stages as being flat - even if the profiles may tell a somewhat different story. Boivin should be the big favourite as one of the quickest in the field and with a good ability on the hills, though Perera and Awang can match him for pure speed.
The Sprinters
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | SP | ACC | Boivin | 74 | 70 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Perera | 71 | 64 | 69 | 73 | 79 | 80 | Awang | 64 | 52 | 67 | 62 | 79 | 83 | Vaquera | 71 | 64 | 69 | 65 | 78 | 80 | Fonseca | 74 | 61 | 74 | 68 | 78 | 77 | Keough | 72 | 64 | 71 | 67 | 78 | 75 | Kruopis | 72 | 69 | 71 | 74 | 77 | 75 | Van Poppel | 75 | 67 | 73 | 71 | 76 | 78 |
Alternatively, the first two stages may instead favour those sprinters who make up for what they lack in quickness with their abilities going uphill. On paper they look like dream routes for McEvoy and Canola, with Navardauskas another to watch in reduced bunch sprints.
The Punchy Sprinters
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | SP | ACC | McEvoy | 70 | 76 | 75 | 70 | 75 | 79 | Navardauskas | 75 | 75 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 70 | Canola | 70 | 73 | 73 | 71 | 75 | 76 | Geschke | 70 | 73 | 73 | 68 | 75 | 74 | Frankovic | 74 | 71 | 71 | 78 | 74 | 76 |

Sent the full sprint set up here, hoping that it translates into some points! Thanks for the preview!

We couldn't send our best squad here, just not enough RDs. If the stages aren't too hard, Thièry should have a good chance in reduced bunch sprints.
However, I guess we won't get a good GC result, the climbs on stage 4 probably being too long for our puncheurs. I'll gladly take any points we can get from here...

Feel like there is a reasonable chance the last stage really favors Chaves who not only on par with the best punchuers in this race, but also very much in the same group of best climbers.
Like the weak sprint field so my man Vaquera also has a shot of really earning his first good points of the season.

Has Boivin forgotten how to race this season? I guess he doesn't want a bigger contract at least.

Nice first stage for McCormick with both Frankovic and Eisenhart looking strong but fear this might be as good s it gets for us.
Congrats to Azteca on another win.

Decent start to the race for Fonseca!
Got a good selection of riders here with Costa, McEvoy and Fernandez. Hopefully they keep us involved up the front of the race.

Huge result for Vaquera! The only rider who has been on my team since its existence. And one of the few from our home country of Mexico! What a move by him go for the long sprint and successfully hold it to the line!

The races until the end of the season for Adastra will be more of an evaluation process since this season is (almost) lost cause.

I guess I can be really happy with Walscheid contesting the sprints at all - and he even got some decent results, finishing inside the Top 10 on both stages.
However, I'd have loved to see some attacks on that last hill. Well, let's try on the remaining stages. As we don't have a real GC contender in our line-up, I really hope to see Pellaud or Thièry on the attack.
Thanks for the reports!

PCM18 is setting up a 10 second time loss on s4 to lose the GC. No timegaps os weird as hell considering its classified as a hilly stage. But already a 1st and 2nd, with decent GC chances, Id say its a successful tour

What an incredibly stupid team strategy that was. Apparently, everyone just joined Pellaud when he was dropped... Just have to hope for a huge breakaway performance on the final stage, but we'll definitely take no single GC point from this race. Sometimes PCM is really, really stupid.
Thanks for the reports, though.
