Race Report, Stage 7

Stage 7 is the second opportunity for the sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn won the other one on Stage 2. He is also the Lanterne Rouge, I am sure the team only cares about one of those. Today we go 167 almost completely flat kilometers from Podgorica to Tirana. Only 1 KOM point, a Cat 4, today, so maybe even the KOM hunters will take the stage off, but with the leaders tied those points could still matter. There are also 2 sprint points on the stage.

On Stage 2, only 3 teams were willing to work: ENI-MOL, Isostar and Duolingo. With 4 more stages in the legs the sprint teams may not have the same willingness to work. Nevertheless, the stage favorites come from among the sprinters:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/fav.jpg

Almost immediately we have a breakaway attempt, KOM Leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne is the third man.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/01.jpg

Just a few kilometers later 2 more men have joined the break and they have a 2’20 lead, this seems like the break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/02.jpg

The riders are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne has decided the effort today for the 5 KOM points is worth it. That seems like a risk given all the climbing tomorrow. Otherwise none of these riders are a GC or KOM threat.

With 0.5km to the KOM point pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne goes for it, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen seems interested in the game.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/03.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne takes the points giving him a 5 point cushion over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan in the KOM.

With 105km to go we reach the first sprint point. The break aren’t interested in contesting it and the peloton doesn’t seem interested in chasing. The lead has been increasing steadily and is now over 9 minutes. The peloton clearly savings energy for tomorrow’s deciding stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/04.jpg

With 78km to go the lead peaks at 12’20. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser started the day 13’58 down on the GC so the peloton must have decided the lead was big enough. Puma and T-Mobile have taken responsibility for stabilizing the lead but they aren’t bringing down much. At the second sprint with 68km to go the lead is still 12’05. The sprint is uncontested.

With 50km to go for the break their lead is 11’06. Puma is doing all the work on the front but they aren’t pushing hard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/05.jpg

With just under 30k to go the lead is 10’27.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/06.jpg

Since the breakaway is clearly going to be fighting out the stage here let’s take a closer look at the riders. Only 3 teams are represented with Carrefour and Delvaux having two riders each. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Cominelli will have to get his tactics right.

To make his job harder he is the weakest sprinter in the group. Both the Carrefour riders have puncheur’s accelerations and a decent sprint so it seems like their biggest competition will be each other if it comes down to a field sprint. Between the Delvaux riders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen is marginally strong but he can’t match the Carrefour boys. Seems like they need to attack from further out.

A little later the peloton decides to make an effort and by the time we reach 22km to go the lead is down to 7’37. A breakaway win still seems likely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/07.jpg

Under the 10k banner the lead is down to 5 minutes exactly. No attacks in the break yet but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen has stopped working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/08.jpg

The break has 5 km to go with no attacks and the peloton is flying behind them now. The lead is down to 3’09, still it seems like it is too late to catch them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/09.jpg

1k to go and the Delvaux riders are on the front as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Daniel opens the sprint. Seems like they are just leading out the Carrefour men.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/10.jpg

2’36 back the peloton is prepping to contest the minor placings.

0.6k to go and the two Carrefour riders have swept to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/11.jpg

200 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne has the edge on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen holding 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/12.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne just holds off his teammate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/13.jpg

A one-two finish on the stage as Carrefour’s team depth pays off. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Christensen takes 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Cominelli 4th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Daniel 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Vesely leads out the sprint for 6th from the peloton but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump catches and passes him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S7/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Pelucchi follow Kump home. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Vesely who was in front 200 meters from the line fades to 10th. The peloton finished 1’56 behind with almost all the riders on the same time.

So a quiet stage 7 sees no change in the GC or any of the jerseys. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne’s mountain point pursuit is rewarded with a stage win. Tomorrow he will have to face the challengers to his mountain jersey.
