Race Report, Stage 6

Through the first 5 stages the puncheurs have been on top in the Balkans International but Stage 6 contains the biggest climb of the race to Goli Vrh, which is 15km at 6%. If the climbers can do some damage it will be here, unfortunately for them the climb peaks 40km before the end of the stage with a long downhill and then some small lumps before the finish. Maybe a breakaway will get the win.

During the stage the peloton heads south from Croatia to Montenegro, going 169km from Dubrovnik to Podgorica. Stage 6 features the usual plethora of KOM points with 4 Cat 4s in addition to the big climb. There are also 3 sprints.

We have all new jersey wearers today as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane wears Yellow, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen Green, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric White and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan the Polka Dots.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/fav.jpg

The first KOM point is just a few kilometers into the stage and with 1km to the top we have our first attack: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/01.jpg

The two battle it out and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne gets to enjoy the view as he heads over the top first. He had 29 KOM points already, now 34, so maybe planning a run at the jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/02.jpg

About 15 km later we get the second Cat 4, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina leads it out but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne passes him over the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne is now on 39 points, just 5 points off the lead but a long while before the next KOM. Meanwhile we have 5 riders 1’01 behind the pair and another 2 a further 53 seconds back. The peloton is at 2’26.

Kulczyk don’t seem happy with the break and are chasing. Maybe because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin isn’t in it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/04.jpg

But a short while later they relent. With 130km we have 7 riders together at the front with a 4’40 lead. They are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lane
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Theuns
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini
Theuns is closest on the GC at 7’45.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/05.jpg

The last two breakaway riders have been stalled just over a minute behind these 7. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Novak. Novak won’t work because he has a teammate ahead.

There is no action at the first sprint point and with 100k to go the front 7 have a lead of 7’44. The other two are now 2’08 behind.

With 60km to go the leaders start the climb to the third Cat 4 of the day. The lead is down to 6’36 after hovering around 7 minutes for most of the last 40k. The two riders in between will be back in the peloton soon. This Cat 4 will be followed quickly by another sprint point and the big climb of the day (we have passed another sprint point with no action).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio attacks first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/07.jpg

He hangs on ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne is now 2 points off the KOM lead and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio is 13 points behind.

They pass the last sprint point without breaking their rotation and start the main climb. It is 15km at 6.1% with the hardest slopes in the first 3k. Their lead is 6’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/08.jpg

The peloton starts the climb with Spar and Moser on the front, but the they aren’t pushing that hard and a few k in the lead is still 6 min.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/09.jpg

5km to the summit and the break is all still together. Their lead has slipped to 5 minutes and a handful of riders have been dropped by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/10.jpg

But soon after first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio are dropped from the break. Ironically they are the ones who want the KOM points the most.

With 1.6 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina attacks, he had been forcing the pace. But all the others react. The peloton is at 4’30 with Spar still leading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/11.jpg

With 0.5 km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina relents and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini counters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini leads over the top ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Theuns. There is a small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina but he should be able to get back. It is less clear for the other two.

5’44 later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png De Plus leads a 110-rider peloton over the top. They slowed down towards the end of the climb. There are 40k to go, things seemed to have turned in favor of the break but the peloton isn’t out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/13.jpg

The full points on the climb are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini 16 (16)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Theuns 12 (13)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lane 10 (22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit 8 (31)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina 6 (21)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio 4 (35)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne 2 (44)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne is now tied for the KOM led and there are still points on the course. But he and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio are more than 2 minutes behind the front 5. It seems likely to come down to a GC tiebreaker.

On the downhill Spar is again doing the bulk of the work. At the bottom of the descent, with 22k to go the lead is 4’38.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini drives the break up the final Cat 4 and nobody is able to come around him. They can scent the chance of stage victory now, the lead is 3’48 with 17 k to go. The other two riders have not been able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini continues his attack over the top and opens up a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/15.jpg

But they bring him back over the next rise and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina counter attack. The peloton is at 3’38, with 11k to go this one is going to the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/16.jpg

The break comes back together. In the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran put in a dig and get a gap. Under the 10k banner Evonik tries to closes it down. The Yellow Jersey is just behind them but has no teammates with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/17.jpg

But after a few kilometers the foursome relents and the pack is back together. There are 65 riders still in the peloton. Up front the break are approaching the 5k banner. In the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins thanks his boys for their work by launching an attack of his own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/18.jpg

The attack pries loose 15 riders, the top 14 in the GC plus pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Skujins himself (20th). Only 15th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs is missing. With 5km to go they have 43 seconds on the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/19.jpg

The next to attack is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen. T-Mobile have two in the Yellow Jersey group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/20.jpg

In the group behind Bennelong is leading the chase, they have #16 on GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Smith. He doesn’t want to lose time on this stage.
Up front the sprint opens with just under 1k to go. These riders are very evenly matched in terms of sprinting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/21.jpg

As they approach the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini has seized the edge ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Theuns.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini takes the sprint. A popular win for Phillips. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Theuns is second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Lane is third. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Scheit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Andriafenomananiaina in 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/23.jpg

Further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen is unable to get away and with 1k to go the 15 attackers open up their sprint. No time bonuses left so this is just for bragging rights (and points).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/24.jpg

At the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen takes it, 2’14 behind the breakaway. He will add to his points lead but no change in the GC. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs group lose 55 seconds and somehow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Smith got dropped from that group losing another 26 seconds, dropping him to 19th in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S6/25.jpg

The only jersey change is KOM where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne takes over on GC position. Tomorrow is a sprint stage but expect both the KOM and the Yellow to be in play on Stage 8.
