Race Report, Stage 2

On stage 1 of the Balkans International the peloton saw fit to grant pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens a 2’22 lead (although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz all within 48 seconds of Waeytens). Clearly they don’t respect those rider’s ability on the bigger climbs later in the race. But stage 2 is for the sprinters, so the answer to that question will have to wait.

Stage 2 features 161km from Zagreb to Prijedor in Bosna, the first of 3 stage finishes in Bosnia. The stage features 4 sprint points and 2 mountain primes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane leads both those competitions but with few points on offer expect him to keep his powder dry. Because the break took most of the spoils on Stage 1 we have some jersey switching. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz will wear polka dots as Calmejane and Waeytens have other jerseys which mean the best young rider jersey will be worn by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Mohoric.

Looking at the course, other than the small climbs mid-stage for the mountain primes, the stage is totally flat so it seems like the best chance for the sprinters this race. The press favorites are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/fav.jpg

Before we leave the streets of Zagreb we have our first attack as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin break away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/01.jpg

They are soon joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Daniel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Laton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Le Gac. And that is our break of the day as the peloton shuts down the only additional attack.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin makes the break today after failing yesterday despite many km of chasing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts was also in the break yesterday but didn’t score enough KOM points to threaten the lead today. None of these riders is a threat on GC either. The riders roll through the first sprint point showing no interest.

But at the second sprint point the Kulczyk riders decide to make an effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin takes the sprint followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Laton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Daniel.

With 130k to go the breakaway has 3’47. With 100k to go the peloton has cut that to 2’51. ENI-MOL, Lierse, Isostar and Duolingo all working. Good thing there is no wind on the plains today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/03.jpg

At the 3rd sprint point the Kulczyk riders again take the points. This time pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Laton ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Daniel third. The team must have decided they need to practice their sprinting.

At the first KOM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin attacks early and holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Le Gac and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin continues his attack as the 2nd KOM is only a few kilometers ahead but the others match him and by the start of the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts has a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/05.jpg

But Potts can’t hold on and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Laton takes 5 points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck 3 and Potts 1. None of these riders have made significant inroads into pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane’s KOM lead. He will wear the jersey tomorrow (unless he is still wearing the points jesey).

With all the action on the climbs the break’s lead is back to 3’27 with 75km to go. The lead has ballooned to almost 4 minutes when the peloton cross the KOM but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Vermote goes to the front and the lead is rapidly reduced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/06.jpg

Continued hard work from ENI-MOL, Isostar and Duolingo has the the lead down to 2’15 with 50km to go. The last sprint point goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Laton but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Daniel beats out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin for second.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/07.jpg

There are 31 km to go, the lead is 1’14 and the same teams are working behind. Next stop a sprint finish. But with 13 km to go the break still has 37 seconds and the 3 chasing team, having got no help from the other teams with sprinters, are beginning to struggle. The break might be in with a chance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/08.jpg

But a big effort from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Goh closes the final gap and with 8.4 km to go the break is caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/09.jpg

With 6.0 km the absence of workers becomes clear as all the sprinters are clustered in the first 20 riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov at the very front and nobody left to set them up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kuznetsov makes his way up front and with 2.6 km to go he is leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump. Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Matthews and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges. Slightly further back but with 2 lead out men (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Pons and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Martinez) is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov. Most of the rest of the sprinters are well placed except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip’s lead out who don’t seem to be participating and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Vesely who is well out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/11.jpg

With the 1k banner in site pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges has opened his sprint. The lead outs are done and two lines have formed behind Borges. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Matthews, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Kreder on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe just behind these groups.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/12.jpg

As they head under the 1k banner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Borges is done and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino goes to the front. But is he too early as well?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/13.jpg

Yes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino is doing what I believe his manager characterized as “sprinting backwards”. He is dead and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni is on the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Matthews and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov behind him. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip. The others are further back but this is anybody (except Avelino)’s race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/14.jpg

It is a sprint of attrition, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni fades and the others are 5 wide. The riders who started further back - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Pelucchi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Kreder, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe are coming fast

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/15.jpg

0.3 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn bursts through the middle

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/16.jpg

Almost to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn can celebrate a win for Popo4ever. In the center pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov is trying to hold off the late comers for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip fading on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov can’t do it, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl grabs second and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Pelucchi third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov settles for 4th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Matthews pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Kreder for 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S2/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe complete the top 10.

No change in any of the jerseys except Europcar take the team jersey from Lierse based on positions.
