Race Report

Stage 1 of the Balkans International sees the peloton tackle 188km from Ljubljana to Zagreb. Two sprints and no less than 8 mountain primes will be on offer, including 3 category 2 climbs. The final climb to Plesivica summits just 10 downhill km before the finish. With the season drawing close more than a few teams are looking to this race for some salvation.

The favorites for today’s stage are shown as:

The 2019 Balkans International leaves Ljubljana under clear skies but with a 25km wind that will be opposing the riders for much of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/01.jpg

The riders are eager to go and we quickly have 5 riders off the front with many others trying to join.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/02.jpg

As we start the first climb, 6.4km at 6.7% to Jance the first five have 1’19 on the peloton, they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin 19 seconds further back. But others are still trying to bridge across.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/03.jpg

With 5km to the summit pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens have opened up 52 seconds from the peloton with the other 6 still in front. But the peloton, in the foreground, is reluctant to let them go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/04.jpg

But soon after the peloton relents and the original 5 joined by the 3 counter attackers have 3 minutes on the peloton 2km from the summit. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin is still caught in between. Perhaps one sign of the depth of the field is that the break includes two 80+ hill riders in Schreurs and Waeytens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs leads a mad charge up to the KOM point but he is overtaken in the final meters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/05.jpg

The points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi - 10
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne - 8
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan - 6
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts - 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens - 2

The next climb, a category 4 goes to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan – 5 (11)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens – 3 (5)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi – 1 (11)

The break has 4’57 on the peloton and 1’56 on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin. At the next KOM, a cat 3 the points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane – 6 (6)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz – 4 (4)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts – 2 (6)

All the riders have been riding the KOMs aggressively and some are already suffering with 136km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi was briefly dropped over the most recent one.

After letting the lead increase a little the peloton has been clawing time back and is now 4’24 back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin is still in no man’s land, and although a strong rider he is paying for his solo efforts.

With 130 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Barbin’s long torture ends. Don’t look for him near the front again today. The peloton has let the lead stretch to 5’24 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni working for Spar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/06.jpg

The break still has energy for the sprint point with 121 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz afor the points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/07.jpg

At the second sprint point with 99km to go the lead is down to 3’18 as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne (12 pts) this time outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane (8 pts) and . pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs (2 pts).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/08.jpg

The next climb to Jugorje Pri Metliki, is a Cat 2 and at 9.8km long the longest in the stage, although it averages at a relatively gentle 4.4%. During this climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Eislers puts the hammer down for the peloton and with 3 km to go he has reduced the lead to 2 minutes. Rider have begun to drop off the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/09.jpg

Over the top the points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens – 10 (15)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane – 8 (14)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne – 6 (14)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz – 4 (8)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi – 2 (13)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/10.jpg

At the next cat 4 the points go to
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts – 5 (11)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane – 3 (17)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne – 1 (15)

After letting the lead creep out the peloton is working hard again with Isotar most prominent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump being one of the workers.

As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane leads the peloton over the last cat 4 the points for this climb go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane 5 (22)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz – 3 (11)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi – 1 (14)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/11.jpg

There is a Cat 2 and a Cat 3 still to go, so while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane has a 7 point lead in the KOM at this point that could still change. None of the break riders have been dropped on the recent climbs but a few of them are looking ragged. The peloton is 2’24 back with 41km to go, the lead having held steady between 2 and 3 minutes for the last 40km. There are still 143 riders in the peloton with no big names dropped but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio are not well placed.

The last cat 2 is a 4.1km climb to Dragonos, averaging 6.7%, as the peloton reaches the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich goes to the front and begins to reduce the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/12.jpg

In the break, with just over 1km to the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz attacks. And for the first time the break splits with only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs able to stay with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/13.jpg

By the top all four of them are suffering.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/14.jpg

The points go to

By the top the peloton has slid back again and the lead is 2’44 to the front 4. The first big splits appear on the downhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio are on the wrong side of the split.

With 20km to go the leaders start the last climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/15.jpg

They have 1 minute on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cahyadi, 2 minutes on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Phelan and 2’29 on the peloton. Spar, Rukuten and Puma are leading the peloton. The last climb is almost 10km but the first 5km are relatively flat with the hard section coming in the last 5 km.

With 3km to the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz attacks again with the others chasing. The peloton are now 1’40 back and the rest of the break have been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/16.jpg

With 1.6 km to the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz falters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens counters. The peloton has relented and the gap is up to 2 minutes. These 4 will fight out the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens gap briefly reaches 30 seconds but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane attack dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz and closing the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/18.jpg

Over the top it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane at 19 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz at 46 and the peloton with 95 riders at 2’41. There are 10km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane will wear the KOM jersey on stage 2 (by a point) as the last points go to:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens – 6 (29)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs – 4 (8)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane – 2 (30)

The leaders don’t seem to have much left with 6km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane has rejoined to make it a leading trio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz is at 24 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Buchmann are leading the peloton for T-Mobile.

With 2.2 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens, the best downhill rider tries again. He has the weakest sprint of the 3 while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane is the best.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/19.jpg

But he can’t shake them and is left to open the sprint just inside the 1k banner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz has never quite caught them and the peloton is just under 2 minutes back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/20.jpg

With the finish in sight he still leads but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane is closing and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Schreurs, who started his sprint last is closing even faster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/21.jpg

But they can’t quite catch him as he can begin to celebrate. Calmejane 2nd, Schreurs 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz follows with a brave 4th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Van Garderen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko lead the peloton home 2’00 behind. All the leaders except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Di Maggio finish on the same time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett was able to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Balkans/S1/24.jpg

With time bonues pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens has a substantial 2’22 lead over the peloton, although only 2 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Calmejane. Calmejane leads the sprint and the KOM and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Denz leads the young rider competition.
