Stage 21
After 20 exciting days of racing, the riders head to Paris today to celebrate the winners of the jerseys and to fight for one of the most prestigeous stage wins in cycling. There’s always the possibility that a breakaway could pull the upset, but most likely this goes to the sprinters.
After Stauff missed the time limit yesterday alongside Nelson, the remaining top sprinters are Demare, who has three stage wins to his name already (and needs to finish in the Top 14 to take back the points jersey), the other stage winners Groenewegen and Samolenkov, as well as Van der Lijke, Van Poppel, Bouhanni, Soupe, Liepins and Van der Sanden.
The four classification jerseys start the day in the first row, as is tradition.
Carthy in the polkadots, Madrazo in yellow, Demare in green - currently in Madrazo’s stead, but at the podium later today probably in his own right again - and Lopez in white.
Vangstad is the last first attacker of this Tour. Hepburn and stage 16 winner Summerhill are the first to follow in the distance.
Kung and Okbamariam join a few moments later.
And that’s it, at least for now. No one else tries to go after them and they are allowed to break free, although not very far: The peloton keeps them at just over a minute.
Interestingly, it’s Tinkoff and Farfetch making the pace there. Maybe they would have liked to have an escapee of their own?
They don’t manage to bring the group back, though, which heads into Paris still just one and a half minutes ahead of the pack.
As they make their way through this beautiful city and past the Eiffel Tower, they look pretty exhausted. And they probably know that their chances to succeed are slim to none, but they put up a good fight nevertheless.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen them at the front, but the spinter teams
Puma, EA Vesuvio and Aegon have take control of the peloton through the narrow streets of the French capital.
Hepburn leads the breakaway through the iconic underpass for what is the first of five times.
A few moments later, they’re onto the Champs Élysées, riding towards the Arc de Triomphe. It must be one of the most memorable experiences a professional cyclist can have, I assume, but for Hepburn, it’s mostly a painful one as he can’t keep up with his companions anymore.
Just as he’s caught by the peloton, we have a late attack by Kolesnikov! Tinkoff indeed still want their man up ahead. And Farfetch have once again taken the lead behind him, apparently using this as their way of getting some TV coverage.
And they quickly bring Kolesnikovback into the fold. The escapees are also less than a minute away now.
Evidently, Farfetch wanted more than just coverage at the front of the peloton! Bettiol makes a move now!
He soon reaches the breakaway and immediately begins to lead it.
However, that alone does not increase their gap to the peloton, so as they exit the underpass for the second time, Bettiol attacks again!
Summerhill brings him back, but at least their gap is now up to over a minute again for the first time in a while.
But not for long, and so the Italian simply tries again.
Once more, he can’t sustain the effort and this time, their advance stays below a minute.
EA Vesuvio and Aegon lead the pursuit again and they seem to want to make it very clear that there can only be one outcome here today - a sprint finish.
You know who’s not happy with that? Yes, you do, because he’s indicated so earlier already: It’s Kolesnikov on the attack again!
Similar to Bettiol, he leads the breakaway for a while only to attack a little later. You can see how close the peloton is by now.
Summerhill tries to prolong his time in the spotlight for a bit with one more acceleration …
… but it’s ultimately a futile attempt. Dekker and Smit make the catch as they round the Arc for the third time.
Kolesnikov still has half a minute, but he would need to sustain that for another 37 kilometers. That seems unlikely.
He makes it 7 before Wirtgen passes him by, still a commendable effort. Will this be a calm 25 kilometers before the final sprint now, or will another courageous rouleur try his luck?
Well, at least it’s not very calm: A grueling pace set by Puma and Grieg - Maersk stretches the peloton and opens a small gap after the first 25 or so riders. Denifl, Galta and a few others are on the wrong side of it. 20 kilometers to go.
Unsurprisingly, that gap was not sustainable, but Puma continues to lead with a high pace. 11 kilometers to go and they seem ready to set up their sprint train for Demare. Groenewegen, Van der Lijke, Bouhanni, Alaphilippe and Liepins have already found his wheel.
It’s Andy Schleck who leads the peloton through the tunnel for the final time, but Puma soon takes over once more.
Chaos ensues when they head onto the road again: Wackermann has
Demare on his wheel, Schleck is the leadout for Van der Lijke and
Phinney, then there’s a small gap to the rest! Only four kilometers to go now.
Two weird trains emerge as we head towards the final left-right corner combination. Demare is already in second position on the road, Van der Lijke, Phinney, Soupe, Ulissi, Van Poppel, Alaphilippe and
Bouhanni behind him.
On the bottom of the screen, Dekker tries to bring Groenewegen back to the front, who in turn is followed by Van der Sanden and Liepins.
Samolenkov is just outside the frame, trying to latch on.
The red kite is placed very weirdly here because it’s not one kilometer from the finish but two! Let’s hope this doesn’t throw some teams off here.
Groenewegen managed to jump onto what is now the only sprint train, just behind Van Poppel.
Wackermann slows down significantly after two kilometers in the wind, and so do Demare and Van der Lijke behind him. Van Poppel reacts first and charges to the front, now actually just over a kilometer from the line.
Van der Lijke struggles to match the acceleration, Demare certainly does not, he’s immediately up to speed. But Soupe and Groenewegen are very fast too! Who will take it?
Dylan Groenewegen wins on the Champs Élysées! Demare doesn’t have that final punch and the Dutch takes his second stage win, capitalizing on his unmatched recovery! What a great way to end an already great race for Aegon!
For Demare, this is his 6th Top 3 finish including three stage wins - he is a worthy winner of the points classification and will wear green again on the podium later!
Alaphilippe provides a late highlight for Podium Ambition - his use, or rather, non-use has been puzzling throughout this race, but he shines today, finishing third. Van der Lijke concludes the race without the coveted stage win, he’s fourth ahead of Bouhanni.
Phinney shows his versatility and finishes sixth today. Soupe and Van Poppel follow …
… before Liepins and Van der Sanden complete the Top 10 ahead of
Ulissi.
Madrazo proves his competitiveness by not just rolling over the line in celebration but actually sprinting, he comes in 13th today, doing the yellow jersey proud.
Lopez and Carthy take it easier, they’re just happy to be here in their respective jerseys.
The final rider rolling over the line is Aleksey Rybalkin - he officially concludes the Tour de France 2019.
And that’s it, my friends! With a signature win, Groenewegen underscores his status as the second top tier sprinter here next to Arnaud Demare, who misses his fourth stage win but reclaims the green jersey properly. Plenty of action without any bad luck or other GC surprises made for a very entertaining final stage - now, all that is left to do is to celebrate the guys on the podium. Enjoy!
