Stage 17
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/P.jpg

We have the final hilly stage of the Tour today, but it’s a modest one. There’s really only one major ascent, the category 3 climb with its peak 12 kilometers from the finish, but even that isn’t all that steep.

Given that, it seems unlikely that today has any GC implications, but the contenders have to be attentive nevertheless. It’s easy to imagine another breakaway win here today, but guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke should target the stage win today. Then again, I said the same thing yesterday, so we’ll have to see.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/01.jpg

It takes a little bit, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner is the first attacker today, looking for a second stage win for Fablok. Frequent escapee pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Walsleben tries to catch his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/02.jpg

But they get nowhere, so two other riders with plenty of breakaway experience try their luck: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/03.jpg

In pursuit now are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado. The former just missed the decisive move yesterday while the latter is 16th in the GC. It might seem smarter for him to save his energy for the Alps, which start tomorrow, but maybe he’s inspired by teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill’s win yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/04.jpg

The quartet gets a gap of about a minute …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/05.jpg

… but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Isostar leads the peloton with almost their entire team, trying to get them back. They seem to be very unhappy not to have someone in the break today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/06.jpg

Despite pulling with seven riders, they don’t manage to bring the breakaway closer, so the eigth rider makes a move himself: On the heels of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Delgerbayar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Pernsteiner goes on the attack. A few other riders try to follow as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/07.jpg

Eventually, a nine-men group makes their way to the front, with no less than three Isostar riders - their efforts pay off. In addition to the duo mentioned above, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Lunke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Shapira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner again, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill, looking for back-to-back stage wins it seems. They soon make contact with the original four escapees to form the break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/08.jpg

You would think that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado’s presence alone would prohibit a gap as large as the one yesterday - he is less than three minutes from the Top 10, after all. And you’d be right: The advance peaks at six and a half minutes, then a variety of teams band together to make sure it doesn’t increase further.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/10.jpg

But it’s not going to be an easy task for the peloton, there are some strong riders up front. With just over 50 kilometers to go, they still have more than three and a half minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/11.jpg

Repsol has emerged as the main team to lead the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Alarcon is currently ninth and they don’t want to give a rival any more time than necessary ahead of the tough upcoming stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/12.jpg

But they are not very effective. The escapees still carry three minutes into the final 30 kilometers. At this point, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Air France joins the front. No efforts from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Puma.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov leads the break towards the top of the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Delgerbayar has to let go, the rest of them look relatively comfortable. They still have a gap of more than two minutes - that should be enough at this point, but they’re not in the clear just yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Lunke can’t rely on his sprint for a good result today, so he attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/16.jpg

He crosses the summit with around 20 seconds ahead of the chasing group, which at this point only has seven riders remaining. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill leads the pursuit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado are with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Grieg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle have taken control of the peloton, but it’s just that: control, not a concerted effort to bring the escapees back. This is going to be another win for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Lunke enters the final five kilometers with a gap of 27 seconds. But after the downhill, the rest of the stage is now flat and with strong rouleurs like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov behind him, he can’t feel safe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/19.jpg

Well, if this isn’t a familiar sight! Midway through the downhill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard attacks from the peloton! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Anuar Aziz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez are the first in a long line of riders following.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/20.jpg

Into the final two kilometers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Lunke still has the same gap and is looking better and better. He starts one final acceleration that shall push him to the stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov lead the group behind him, but they have to increase the pace if they want to catch up!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/22.jpg

In the peloton, nothing came of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard’s first attack, but that doesn’t prevent him from trying again. But the rest of the pack is attentive once more. We’ll focus our attention on the leaders for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/23.jpg

It’s a long home stretch and the chasers can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Lunke, but he seems too far away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/24.jpg

After a long sustained effort, the Norwegian doesn’t have the energy left to properly celebrate, but he will surely do so with his team later tonight. What a great win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Lunke, and he even makes a jump in the GC, from 27th to 22nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner lead the group to the line …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/26.jpg

… where it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill who takes second place ahead of the Russian. So close to a second stage win, but Andorra will still be happy with this result I assume. Especially since pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado looks set to gain some significant time for the GC! The clock starts ticking for him now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol finishes fourth today ahead of the Portuguese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner fades in the final few hundred meters and finishes eigth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/27.jpg

The puncheurs lead the peloton into the last two kilometers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Anuar Aziz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ulissi, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard also in the mix. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke are around the tenth position, just behind the yellow jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/28.jpg

But first, let’s acknowledge the other escapees who managed to stay ahead of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Shapira outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Katrasnik finishes 11th. At this point, close to two minutes have passed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Wohrer comes in some 40 seconds later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez opens a gap to the rest of the peloton inside the last kilometer …

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen sprint in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S17/31.jpg

And the former two just beat him to the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare finishes 13th, and once again it remains a puzzling decision by the sprinter teams to not invest any ressources into bringing the breakaway back in time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado ends up gaining three and a half minutes on the peloton, he jumps all the way up to 10th overall. That region of the Top 20 is very close, with only 1’43 seperating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Barguil in 8th from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens in 13th, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado is right in the mix now. Let’s just hope he doesn’t suffer tomorrow because of his efforts today when we head into the Alps for the deciding stages of this race.
