Stage 17
We have the final hilly stage of the Tour today, but it’s a modest one. There’s really only one major ascent, the category 3 climb with its peak 12 kilometers from the finish, but even that isn’t all that steep.
Given that, it seems unlikely that today has any GC implications, but the contenders have to be attentive nevertheless. It’s easy to imagine another breakaway win here today, but guys like Demare or Van der Lijke should target the stage win today. Then again, I said the same thing yesterday, so we’ll have to see.
It takes a little bit, but Bostner is the first attacker today, looking for a second stage win for Fablok. Frequent escapee Walsleben tries to catch his wheel.
But they get nowhere, so two other riders with plenty of breakaway experience try their luck: Prado and Kolesnikov.
In pursuit now are Bettiol and Machado. The former just missed the decisive move yesterday while the latter is 16th in the GC. It might seem smarter for him to save his energy for the Alps, which start tomorrow, but maybe he’s inspired by teammate Summerhill’s win yesterday.
The quartet gets a gap of about a minute …
… but Isostar leads the peloton with almost their entire team, trying to get them back. They seem to be very unhappy not to have someone in the break today.
Despite pulling with seven riders, they don’t manage to bring the breakaway closer, so the eigth rider makes a move himself: On the heels of Delgerbayar, Pernsteiner goes on the attack. A few other riders try to follow as well.
Eventually, a nine-men group makes their way to the front, with no less than three Isostar riders - their efforts pay off. In addition to the duo mentioned above, we have Augustyn, Katrasnik, Lunke, Wohrer, Shapira, Bostner again, and Summerhill, looking for back-to-back stage wins it seems. They soon make contact with the original four escapees to form the break of the day.
You would think that Machado’s presence alone would prohibit a gap as large as the one yesterday - he is less than three minutes from the Top 10, after all. And you’d be right: The advance peaks at six and a half minutes, then a variety of teams band together to make sure it doesn’t increase further.
But it’s not going to be an easy task for the peloton, there are some strong riders up front. With just over 50 kilometers to go, they still have more than three and a half minutes.
Repsol has emerged as the main team to lead the chase. Alarcon is currently ninth and they don’t want to give a rival any more time than necessary ahead of the tough upcoming stages.
But they are not very effective. The escapees still carry three minutes into the final 30 kilometers. At this point, Air France joins the front. No efforts from EA Vesuvio or Puma.
Kolesnikov leads the break towards the top of the climb. Delgerbayar has to let go, the rest of them look relatively comfortable. They still have a gap of more than two minutes - that should be enough at this point, but they’re not in the clear just yet.
Lunke can’t rely on his sprint for a good result today, so he attacks!
He crosses the summit with around 20 seconds ahead of the chasing group, which at this point only has seven riders remaining. Summerhill leads the pursuit, Kolesnikov, Augustyn, Machado, Bettiol, Bostner and Prado are with him.
Grieg and Gazelle have taken control of the peloton, but it’s just that: control, not a concerted effort to bring the escapees back. This is going to be another win for the breakaway.
Lunke enters the final five kilometers with a gap of 27 seconds. But after the downhill, the rest of the stage is now flat and with strong rouleurs like Summerhill and Kolesnikov behind him, he can’t feel safe.
Well, if this isn’t a familiar sight! Midway through the downhill, Sicard attacks from the peloton! Anuar Aziz and Lopez are the first in a long line of riders following.
Into the final two kilometers, Lunke still has the same gap and is looking better and better. He starts one final acceleration that shall push him to the stage win!
Summerhill and Kolesnikov lead the group behind him, but they have to increase the pace if they want to catch up!
In the peloton, nothing came of Sicard’s first attack, but that doesn’t prevent him from trying again. But the rest of the pack is attentive once more. We’ll focus our attention on the leaders for now.
It’s a long home stretch and the chasers can see Lunke, but he seems too far away.
After a long sustained effort, the Norwegian doesn’t have the energy left to properly celebrate, but he will surely do so with his team later tonight. What a great win for Lunke, and he even makes a jump in the GC, from 27th to 22nd.
Summerhill, Kolesnikov and Bostner lead the group to the line …
… where it’s Summerhill who takes second place ahead of the Russian. So close to a second stage win, but Andorra will still be happy with this result I assume. Especially since Machado looks set to gain some significant time for the GC! The clock starts ticking for him now.
Bettiol finishes fourth today ahead of the Portuguese, Prado and Augustyn. Bostner fades in the final few hundred meters and finishes eigth.
The puncheurs lead the peloton into the last two kilometers, Lopez ahead of Anuar Aziz and Ulissi, with Sicard also in the mix. Demare and Van der Lijke are around the tenth position, just behind the yellow jersey.
But first, let’s acknowledge the other escapees who managed to stay ahead of the peloton. Shapira outsprints Pernsteiner, Katrasnik finishes 11th. At this point, close to two minutes have passed. Wohrer comes in some 40 seconds later.
Lopez opens a gap to the rest of the peloton inside the last kilometer …
Demare, Van der Lijke and even Groenewegen sprint in pursuit.
And the former two just beat him to the line. Demare finishes 13th, and once again it remains a puzzling decision by the sprinter teams to not invest any ressources into bringing the breakaway back in time.
Machado ends up gaining three and a half minutes on the peloton, he jumps all the way up to 10th overall. That region of the Top 20 is very close, with only 1’43 seperating Barguil in 8th from Wellens in 13th, but Machado is right in the mix now. Let’s just hope he doesn’t suffer tomorrow because of his efforts today when we head into the Alps for the deciding stages of this race.
