Stage 16
The peloton is back down to sea level today, or at least closer to it. Starting and finishing in Nimes, the course has some hills here and there, including one climb just 11 kilometers from the finish. Still, this should be a sprint finish, the first in a while - unless the peloton takes it slow after a taxing few days in the peloton and a breakaway takes the stage.
But there are many teams who have an interest in avoiding that. All sprinters made it through the Pyrenees, although the likes of Nelson, Stauff and Bouhanni have certainly suffered more than others. Van der Lijke finally wants that stage win, for himself but also to compensate for Schleck’s unfortunate GC campaign.
And lastly, Puma would be well-advised to bring back any escapees in order collect as many points as possible for Demare. Madrazo was dominant in the past two days and he’s only 20 points behind the French in the points classification. With two more mountain top finishes and a third mountain stage left for him to score big points, Puma should do everything in their power to nail down the green jersey once and for all today and tomorrow.
Kolesnikov initiated the first breakaway attempt of the day, but the peloton doesn’t seem to be willing to let this group go.
Tinkoff seems very intent on having a man up front today, so it’s Foliforov who goes next, followed by Vangstad.
They are joined by Summerhill and Viviani, two excellent rouleurs. Bettiol, Okbamariam and again Kolesnikov are in pursuit.
Only Kolesnikov and, after a lengthy and exhausting solo chase, Okbamariam bridged the gap, so we have a six men group of the day.
For the first time in this entire race, a mountain sprint goes by uncontested. It’s very reasonable of course for them not to expend unnecessary energy, but not every break has been reasobable so far. They have a gap of six minutes to the peloton.
There are still more than 100 kilometers left, but the advance has now reached more than 8 minutes. The peloton has to wake up soon if they want to bring this group back eventually.
But it’s Gazelle leading the pack, the sprinter teams are only in the second row. Maybe they are still too exhausted after all that climbing in the past few days.
The gap exceeds the ten minute mark with 80 kilometers to go. It seems like everyone is comfortable with giving this one to the breakaway.
There is no really great sprinter in this group, but a couple of them are pretty evenly matched with decent speed. Foliforov and Vangstad are the only ones who are significantly slower than the rest, so they might be inclined to try something on the final hill. Kolesnikov can also climb well, he has the additional advantage of having sat at the back of the group the entire day while his teammate worked for him.
But there are no attacks on the ascent and they embark on the final 11 kilometers as a group, still 10 minutes ahead of the peloton.
No attacks on the flat towards the finish either, but as soon as they hit the 3 kilometers mark, Summerhill accelerates. If there’s anyone who can hold an effort for that distance, it’s obviously him, but that still seems early.
So early in fact that his companions seem to be okay waiting to sprint themselves. But underestimating Summerhill could be a mistake!
He has a sizeable gap and already approaches the red kite when Okbamariam finally opens the sprint of the group.
Kolesnikov comes around the final corner with high speed, but the finish line is close!
But Summerhill is slowing down now! Can he pull through for the wild card team, or will Tinkoff be able to celebrate their second stage win?
It’s enough for Summerhill! What a spectacular effort to cap off this stage! Kolesnikov, Viviani and Okbamariam finish next.
Vangstad is in a successful breakaway for the second time, but only manages a fifth place, Foliforov is sixth, he even gets a time gap after a very slow finish.
In the peloton, there’s only one real sprint train today. Goos and Reimer lead Van der Lijke, Groenewegen, Demare and Stauff, although Felline is still in the mix as well.
Van Poppel is close, too, and just outside the frame, Nelson, Bouhanni and Samolenkov try to find a wheel.
With a big acceleration, Felline jumps to the front, Demare behind him, Van Poppel and Nelson try to latch on.
As we’ve seen, it’s a tricky, technical finish. Even this isn’t the final corner. Demare is still in great position behind Felline.
He has the inside track through the corner towards the finish line, but Van der Lijke is almost there with him. Van Poppel and Groenewegen make up the second row, then Nelson, Stauff and Hansen, no other sprinter is in contention at this point.
Demare has trouble accelerating out of that corner and both Dutchmen pass him by, Groenewegen now in the lead!
And he takes it - it being seventh place, of course. Nelson finishes eigth.
Van der Lijke and Stauff complete the Top 10, Demare disappoints with a 13th place behind Reimer and Hansen.
For only the third time this race (or is it: already the first time? What’s the normal amount here?), the breakaway takes the stage win. It’s a big one for the only wild card team here, who already justify their invitation with Machado’s decent GC campaign but get to celebrate an even bigger achievement today.
The sprinters miss their last shot before Paris (although at least Demare and maybe Van der Lijke certainly have their eye on tomorrow as well), with Groenewegen obviously the one who will be disappointed the most, missing out on a stage win.
