Stage 16
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/P.jpg

The peloton is back down to sea level today, or at least closer to it. Starting and finishing in Nimes, the course has some hills here and there, including one climb just 11 kilometers from the finish. Still, this should be a sprint finish, the first in a while - unless the peloton takes it slow after a taxing few days in the peloton and a breakaway takes the stage.

But there are many teams who have an interest in avoiding that. All sprinters made it through the Pyrenees, although the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni have certainly suffered more than others. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke finally wants that stage win, for himself but also to compensate for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Schleck’s unfortunate GC campaign.

And lastly, Puma would be well-advised to bring back any escapees in order collect as many points as possible for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Madrazo was dominant in the past two days and he’s only 20 points behind the French in the points classification. With two more mountain top finishes and a third mountain stage left for him to score big points, Puma should do everything in their power to nail down the green jersey once and for all today and tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov initiated the first breakaway attempt of the day, but the peloton doesn’t seem to be willing to let this group go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/02.jpg

Tinkoff seems very intent on having a man up front today, so it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov who goes next, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/03.jpg

They are joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Viviani, two excellent rouleurs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Okbamariam and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov are in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/04.jpg

Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov and, after a lengthy and exhausting solo chase, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Okbamariam bridged the gap, so we have a six men group of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/05.jpg

For the first time in this entire race, a mountain sprint goes by uncontested. It’s very reasonable of course for them not to expend unnecessary energy, but not every break has been reasobable so far. They have a gap of six minutes to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/07.jpg

There are still more than 100 kilometers left, but the advance has now reached more than 8 minutes. The peloton has to wake up soon if they want to bring this group back eventually.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/08.jpg

But it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle leading the pack, the sprinter teams are only in the second row. Maybe they are still too exhausted after all that climbing in the past few days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/09.jpg

The gap exceeds the ten minute mark with 80 kilometers to go. It seems like everyone is comfortable with giving this one to the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/11.jpg

There is no really great sprinter in this group, but a couple of them are pretty evenly matched with decent speed. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad are the only ones who are significantly slower than the rest, so they might be inclined to try something on the final hill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov can also climb well, he has the additional advantage of having sat at the back of the group the entire day while his teammate worked for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/12.jpg

But there are no attacks on the ascent and they embark on the final 11 kilometers as a group, still 10 minutes ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/13.jpg

No attacks on the flat towards the finish either, but as soon as they hit the 3 kilometers mark, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill accelerates. If there’s anyone who can hold an effort for that distance, it’s obviously him, but that still seems early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/14.jpg

So early in fact that his companions seem to be okay waiting to sprint themselves. But underestimating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill could be a mistake!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/15.jpg

He has a sizeable gap and already approaches the red kite when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Okbamariam finally opens the sprint of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov comes around the final corner with high speed, but the finish line is close!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/17.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill is slowing down now! Can he pull through for the wild card team, or will Tinkoff be able to celebrate their second stage win?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/18.jpg

It’s enough for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill! What a spectacular effort to cap off this stage! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Viviani and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Okbamariam finish next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad is in a successful breakaway for the second time, but only manages a fifth place, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov is sixth, he even gets a time gap after a very slow finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/20.jpg

In the peloton, there’s only one real sprint train today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Goos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer lead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff, although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Felline is still in the mix as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel is close, too, and just outside the frame, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov try to find a wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/21.jpg

With a big acceleration, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Felline jumps to the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare behind him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson try to latch on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/22.jpg

As we’ve seen, it’s a tricky, technical finish. Even this isn’t the final corner. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare is still in great position behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Felline.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/23.jpg

He has the inside track through the corner towards the finish line, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is almost there with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen make up the second row, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Hansen, no other sprinter is in contention at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare has trouble accelerating out of that corner and both Dutchmen pass him by, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen now in the lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/25.jpg

And he takes it - it being seventh place, of course. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson finishes eigth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S16/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff complete the Top 10, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare disappoints with a 13th place behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Hansen.

For only the third time this race (or is it: already the first time? What’s the normal amount here?), the breakaway takes the stage win. It’s a big one for the only wild card team here, who already justify their invitation with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Machado’s decent GC campaign but get to celebrate an even bigger achievement today.

The sprinters miss their last shot before Paris (although at least pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare and maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke certainly have their eye on tomorrow as well), with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen obviously the one who will be disappointed the most, missing out on a stage win.
