Stage 11
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/P.jpg

Tomorrow’s mountain stage marks the first of four very crucial days for the GC contenders, but before that, the sprinters get another shot. With those tough mountain stages ahead, it may be the last one for the weaker climbers among them like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson.

The latter showed his potential for the first time yesterday when he finished second. Meanwhile, it was also the first time that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen played no role whatsoever in the sprint and with a third place as his best result yet, he is certainly motivated to improve on that. There’s a lot at stake for a number of riders today, so let’s see how they handle the pressure.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/01.jpg

But first, we have the escapees in the spotlight, of course. Our current lanterne rouge pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vlatos opens the day, soon followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Dees, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Anuar Aziz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/02.jpg

They quickly establish a two-minute lead and no one tries to join them, so they will have the spotlight for themselves today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/03.jpg

Eventhough none of them have any mountain points thus far, the breakaway still goes all out at the lone mountain sprint of the day and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vlatos struggles to keep up with his companions. Under different circumstances, the Festina rider would be one of the favorites for the ITT in two days, but tomorrow's mountain stage looms large. You have to wonder if it wouldn’t be wiser if he preserved what’s left in his tank for that, but maybe he sees today as a final opportunity to do something at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/04.jpg

It’s a bit of a dull stage today. The breakaway does its thing but the usual suspects in the peloton make sure that success is never really in the cards for the group up front. With 50 kilometers to go, the gap is at two minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/06.jpg

At least the streets are full, lots of fans are on the sides today rooting for the riders. With the peloton coming closer, the escapees try to prolong their time ahead by attacking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Restrepo is the first to lose touch, although just temporarily.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Cavagna makes the final push to bring the group back into the fold just as the peloton passes through the 10km banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/08.jpg

The sprint prep is a bit messy. Aegon had a train going for a while that has now, with 3km to go, fallen apart completely as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is the first of their riders on the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel is even closer to the front in sixth position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke closely, who in turn has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer ahead of him, as usual.

Next to the green jersey, we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson (without pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe or any other teammate) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, who is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov to their left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/09.jpg

We have a beautifully long and straight home stretch here and the two trains we are used to seeing have emerged on both sides of the road, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Wackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Felline, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kneisky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel leads a couple of sprinters in the middle of the road, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard is in the mix as well ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden, trying to collect a few sprint points it seems.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/10.jpg

Coming closer to the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare is in trouble after he got caught behind a dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Wackermann. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke is now second on the road, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke charges to the front on the left, finally not too early, it would seem. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is also fast to his right, but the second row is trying to catch up, including a resurging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/12.jpg

The green jersey comes closer but the two Dutchmen still have the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson is very quick as well, trying to move onto the podium at least!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen are neck and neck, it’s going to be super close!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/14.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen takes it at the last second! Heartbreak for EA Vesuvio after coming as close as they had yet in a sprint, but a big weight falls off Groenewegen’s shoulders as he finally celebrates his first Tour de France stage win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden come in next, decent results for all three of them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov to finish sixth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S11/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins in a photo finish, the Latvian had decent speed but very poor positioning. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel ends up 13th after an erratic sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard lead a few of the other GC riders over the line directly behind to collect two points and one point each.

On the, all things considered, maybe least spectacular stage of the race so far, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen finally delivers his team the stage win they’ve been working so hard for. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke comes up just short, but at least he was really close for the first time today, showing a win is generally within reach (plus, in contrast to Aegon, EA Vesuvio already had one stage win prior of today, courtesy of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare scores his fifth podium place of the race, increasing his lead in the points competition to a solid 64 points.

As alluded to before the stage, the upcoming days will be all about survival for some of the sprinters, hoping to get another chance in Nimes on Tuesday. But for now, the spotlight is on the GC favorites: The Pyrenees await!
