Stage 11
Tomorrow’s mountain stage marks the first of four very crucial days for the GC contenders, but before that, the sprinters get another shot. With those tough mountain stages ahead, it may be the last one for the weaker climbers among them like Bouhanni, Stauff and Nelson.
The latter showed his potential for the first time yesterday when he finished second. Meanwhile, it was also the first time that Groenewegen played no role whatsoever in the sprint and with a third place as his best result yet, he is certainly motivated to improve on that. There’s a lot at stake for a number of riders today, so let’s see how they handle the pressure.
But first, we have the escapees in the spotlight, of course. Our current lanterne rouge Vlatos opens the day, soon followed by Dees, Restrepo and Anuar Aziz.
They quickly establish a two-minute lead and no one tries to join them, so they will have the spotlight for themselves today.
Eventhough none of them have any mountain points thus far, the breakaway still goes all out at the lone mountain sprint of the day and Vlatos struggles to keep up with his companions. Under different circumstances, the Festina rider would be one of the favorites for the ITT in two days, but tomorrow's mountain stage looms large. You have to wonder if it wouldn’t be wiser if he preserved what’s left in his tank for that, but maybe he sees today as a final opportunity to do something at all.
It’s a bit of a dull stage today. The breakaway does its thing but the usual suspects in the peloton make sure that success is never really in the cards for the group up front. With 50 kilometers to go, the gap is at two minutes.
At least the streets are full, lots of fans are on the sides today rooting for the riders. With the peloton coming closer, the escapees try to prolong their time ahead by attacking. Restrepo is the first to lose touch, although just temporarily.
Cavagna makes the final push to bring the group back into the fold just as the peloton passes through the 10km banner.
The sprint prep is a bit messy. Aegon had a train going for a while that has now, with 3km to go, fallen apart completely as Groenewegen is the first of their riders on the road. Van Poppel is even closer to the front in sixth position. Demare follows Van der Lijke closely, who in turn has Reimer ahead of him, as usual.
Next to the green jersey, we see Van der Sanden ahead of Nelson (without Alaphilippe or any other teammate) and Bouhanni, who is followed by Stauff, Soupe and Liepins; Samolenkov to their left.
We have a beautifully long and straight home stretch here and the two trains we are used to seeing have emerged on both sides of the road, Demare behind Wackermann and Felline, Van der Lijke behind Goos, Kneisky and Reimer.
Van Poppel leads a couple of sprinters in the middle of the road, and Sicard is in the mix as well ahead of Van der Sanden, trying to collect a few sprint points it seems.
Coming closer to the flamme rouge, Demare is in trouble after he got caught behind a dropping Wackermann. Van der Lijke is now second on the road, followed by Groenewegen, Van Poppel, Van der Sanden and Nelson with Bouhanni and Stauff next.
Van der Lijke charges to the front on the left, finally not too early, it would seem. Groenewegen is also fast to his right, but the second row is trying to catch up, including a resurging Demare.
The green jersey comes closer but the two Dutchmen still have the lead. Nelson is very quick as well, trying to move onto the podium at least!
Van der Lijke and Groenewegen are neck and neck, it’s going to be super close!
And Groenewegen takes it at the last second! Heartbreak for EA Vesuvio after coming as close as they had yet in a sprint, but a big weight falls off Groenewegen’s shoulders as he finally celebrates his first Tour de France stage win!
Demare, Nelson and Van der Sanden come in next, decent results for all three of them. Bouhanni beats Stauff and Samolenkov to finish sixth.
Soupe edges out Liepins in a photo finish, the Latvian had decent speed but very poor positioning. Van Poppel ends up 13th after an erratic sprint, Phinney and Sicard lead a few of the other GC riders over the line directly behind to collect two points and one point each.
On the, all things considered, maybe least spectacular stage of the race so far, Groenewegen finally delivers his team the stage win they’ve been working so hard for. Van der Lijke comes up just short, but at least he was really close for the first time today, showing a win is generally within reach (plus, in contrast to Aegon, EA Vesuvio already had one stage win prior of today, courtesy of Smit). Demare scores his fifth podium place of the race, increasing his lead in the points competition to a solid 64 points.
As alluded to before the stage, the upcoming days will be all about survival for some of the sprinters, hoping to get another chance in Nimes on Tuesday. But for now, the spotlight is on the GC favorites: The Pyrenees await!
