Stage 10
The peloton leaves the Massif central today but while the stage is classified as flat, we’re still in the outskirts of a highland and it shows. There’s a constant up and down throughout most of the day which could pose a challenge for sprinters like Nelson, Bouhanni or Stauff and also opens up the possibility for another breakaway to succeed.
On the other hand, a number of teams will try to ensure a sprint finish, most of all Puma for Demare after they failed to capitalize on the previous two stages. Van der Lijke also still has a lot to prove in sprints here and he’ll try to make it back-to-back stage wins for EA Vesuvio.
Established escapee Danacik is the first to make a move, immediately followed by six riders.
With a lot of manpower, Generali brings them back and we see why as Viviani immediately goes on the attack once the first group is caught.
He’s joined by Chernetskiy and Gidich with Walsleben and Atkins in pursuit.
They establish a decent gap and for a while it looks like that’s it, but then Georgian champion Nareklishvili goes after them.
Just before the first mountain sprint, he makes contact and joins the first escapees to form the final break of the day.
Chernetskiy and Gidich are the best puncheurs in this group but it’s Walsleben who is first over the line. None of them are close to the top in the KoM rankings.
Viviani takes six points at the second mountain sprint. The group has a solid five minutes on the peloton.
Gidich takes mountain sprint three, but with more than 100 kilometers to go, the gap of the escapees is already coming down.
Probably because our usual sprinter teams have taken control. EA Vesuvio, Puma and Aegon want to make sure that the breakaway doesn’t get too big of a gap.
Not much happened for a while. But in good tradition, the breakaway riders get nervous once the peloton comes close enough. Nareklishvili is the first to try and leave his companions behind.
He would of course be caught again soon and has nothing left in the tank as the other escapees accelerate.
We’re inside the final 15 kilometers and Gidich has a small gap to the rest of the group, but the peloton is slowly reeling them in. Still, it should hurry if teams want a clean preparation for the sprint.
Gidich held on for a long time and he’s caught with just four kilometers to go.
There are a few nasty corners towards the finish line so positioning could be key. Arndt and Wackermann bring Demare to the front, meanwhile Evonik has a nice sprint train with Belgasem and Eislers for Liepins.
Van der Lijke follows Reimer between the two teams, he’s in turn followed by Bouhanni, Van Poppel, Stauff and Nelson, from left to right. Podium Ambition did some work chasing today, could this be Nelson’s first good sprint? At least the hills don't seem to have given him many problems and for the first time, he has Alaphilippe right there with him.
Van der Sanden, Soupe and Samolenkov lurk a little further behind, Groenewegen is nowhere to be found.
Wow! With a big push through one of the corners, Alaphilippe charges to the front with Nelson in his wheel and just rips apart the front of the peloton. Demare somehow latches on as the Puma train collapses, Reimer keeps up but Van der Lijke loses him for a bit. Bouhanni and Stauff follow, but after them there’s a big, big gap!
Alaphilippe drops out and Van der Lijke moves to the front very early, but there’s a slight tailwind that could help him. Nelson and Demare are in great positions behind him, then Stauff and Bouhanni, and again, no one else is even close!
Van der Lijke can’t muster any pace as Nelson and Demare accelerate past him with ease!
Demare takes the lead as both Nelson and Stauff seem to slow down a little. Bouhanni is just now trying to make his way past the EA duo.
The French pulls away, can anyone counter him?
No! It’s an easy win for Demare, his third of the race and a much-needed big step towards the green jersey! In this crazy buildup, he reacted perfectly and showed his strength. Nelson will probably still be very happy with a second place, by far his and his team’s best result and an indication of what is possible when Alaphilippe fulfils his role as a leadout. Stauff is third, another good result for him.
In a photo finish, Van der Lijke and Reimer both outsprint Bouhanni for a weird, but in combination probably solid result. Alaphilippe finishes seventh.
Samolenkov wins the sprint of the remaining peloton ahead of Van Poppel, Van der Sanden and Soupe. Liepins ends up 13th after his team tried a sprint train for the first time, but that fell apart completely. Sicard collects one point, finishing 15th, but the gap at the top of the sprint classification becomes much bigger today.
In a wild finish, Demare cements his sprinting supremacy and is the first rider to collect a second sprint win here (in addition to his win on the hilly stage 3). He simply had the right instincts and managed to follow Nelson when the front of the peloton erupted, instead of staying behind his teammates. Podium Ambition will be happy to see that they can be competitive in sprints after all, and if Alaphilippe joins the sprint prep consistently, they could get another shot at a stage win.
