Stage 10
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/P.jpg

The peloton leaves the Massif central today but while the stage is classified as flat, we’re still in the outskirts of a highland and it shows. There’s a constant up and down throughout most of the day which could pose a challenge for sprinters like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and also opens up the possibility for another breakaway to succeed.

On the other hand, a number of teams will try to ensure a sprint finish, most of all Puma for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare after they failed to capitalize on the previous two stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke also still has a lot to prove in sprints here and he’ll try to make it back-to-back stage wins for EA Vesuvio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/01.jpg

Established escapee pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Danacik is the first to make a move, immediately followed by six riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/02.jpg

With a lot of manpower, Generali brings them back and we see why as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Viviani immediately goes on the attack once the first group is caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/03.jpg

He’s joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Walsleben and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Atkins in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/04.jpg

They establish a decent gap and for a while it looks like that’s it, but then Georgian champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili goes after them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/06.jpg

Just before the first mountain sprint, he makes contact and joins the first escapees to form the final break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Chernetskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich are the best puncheurs in this group but it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Walsleben who is first over the line. None of them are close to the top in the KoM rankings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Viviani takes six points at the second mountain sprint. The group has a solid five minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich takes mountain sprint three, but with more than 100 kilometers to go, the gap of the escapees is already coming down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/10.jpg

Probably because our usual sprinter teams have taken control. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Puma and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Aegon want to make sure that the breakaway doesn’t get too big of a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/12.jpg

Not much happened for a while. But in good tradition, the breakaway riders get nervous once the peloton comes close enough. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili is the first to try and leave his companions behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/13.jpg

He would of course be caught again soon and has nothing left in the tank as the other escapees accelerate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/14.jpg

We’re inside the final 15 kilometers and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich has a small gap to the rest of the group, but the peloton is slowly reeling them in. Still, it should hurry if teams want a clean preparation for the sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich held on for a long time and he’s caught with just four kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/16.jpg

There are a few nasty corners towards the finish line so positioning could be key. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Wackermann bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare to the front, meanwhile Evonik has a nice sprint train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Belgasem and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Eislers for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer between the two teams, he’s in turn followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson, from left to right. Podium Ambition did some work chasing today, could this be Nelson’s first good sprint? At least the hills don't seem to have given him many problems and for the first time, he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe right there with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov lurk a little further behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen is nowhere to be found.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/17.jpg

Wow! With a big push through one of the corners, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe charges to the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson in his wheel and just rips apart the front of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare somehow latches on as the Puma train collapses, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer keeps up but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke loses him for a bit. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff follow, but after them there’s a big, big gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe drops out and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke moves to the front very early, but there’s a slight tailwind that could help him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare are in great positions behind him, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni, and again, no one else is even close!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke can’t muster any pace as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare accelerate past him with ease!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare takes the lead as both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff seem to slow down a little. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni is just now trying to make his way past the EA duo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/21.jpg

The French pulls away, can anyone counter him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/22.jpg

No! It’s an easy win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare, his third of the race and a much-needed big step towards the green jersey! In this crazy buildup, he reacted perfectly and showed his strength. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson will probably still be very happy with a second place, by far his and his team’s best result and an indication of what is possible when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe fulfils his role as a leadout. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Stauff is third, another good result for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/23.jpg

In a photo finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Reimer both outsprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Bouhanni for a weird, but in combination probably solid result. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe finishes seventh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S10/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov wins the sprint of the remaining peloton ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Van der Sanden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Liepins ends up 13th after his team tried a sprint train for the first time, but that fell apart completely. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard collects one point, finishing 15th, but the gap at the top of the sprint classification becomes much bigger today.

In a wild finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare cements his sprinting supremacy and is the first rider to collect a second sprint win here (in addition to his win on the hilly stage 3). He simply had the right instincts and managed to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Nelson when the front of the peloton erupted, instead of staying behind his teammates. Podium Ambition will be happy to see that they can be competitive in sprints after all, and if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe joins the sprint prep consistently, they could get another shot at a stage win.
