Stage 9
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/P.jpg

After a tumultuous stage that saw pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes taking over the polkadots and coming just 2 kilometers short of a stage win, which eventually went to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney, the peloton is once again on hilly terrain today.

The circumstances mirror yesterday in so far as it looks like a decent opportunity for a breakaway again, we could see some action among the GC riders towards the end, and if none of that materializes, we have to look at pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare once more. He couldn’t display his full strength yesterday and certainly hopes to do better today to maybe add a third stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kneisky opens the day with the first attack, followed by two illustrious names in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Boom, who won the opening stage last year, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes. The Costa Rican intends to add to his lead in the mountain classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönberger are the first to join them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Manulang try to catch up as well - a few familiar names from breakaways in the first week.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/03.jpg

And they are not the only ones. A long line of riders try to get ahead of the peloton - as expected, a place in the breakaway is coveted on this stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/04.jpg

And the pack seems content to let all of them go, so we end up with a group of 23 riders a good four and a half minutes ahead of the peloton. Let’s take stock, these are the men in there:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Maryczpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Danacikpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schönbergerpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Kolar

Notably, Moser managed to get five men into this break, Andorra, Indosat and Farfetch’d three each. We also have many riders who’ve been in breaks before.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes leads the mountain classification with 60 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Danacik with 44 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Galiev with 32. He is also the best-placed rider in the GC (44th, + 14’25) and the best climber, while his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Anuar Aziz is the best puncheur of this group, but there are lots of good uphill riders and allrounders present. We’ll see how the category one climb affects things.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/06.jpg

The pace wasn’t all that high in the front group up this climb as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill was leading them pretty much all the way - apparently in preparation for this attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Galiev. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes is towards the end of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Galiev went too early and is only fourth over the line behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol, teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis which brings his total up to 40 mountain points. Alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kireva, they establish a small gap to the rest of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Salzmann suffered most up that climb, but after a while, he reunites with everyone else. With 120 kilometers to go, their gap is just over five minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kireva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kneisky lead the escapees at the intermediate sprint. The group still consists of 20 riders - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Salzmann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Tizza and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Marycz fell behind -, but it’s not working very well at all and the peloton has cut their lead to only around two minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/11.jpg

On the way to the other mountain sprint, a few more riders have to let go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Summerhill is the first, followed by fellow Andorra teammates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kireva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Galiev. They seem to suffer the long-term consequences of their efforts on the first climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/13.jpg

They are not the last who lose contact with the front. At the foot of the ascent, only nine riders remain up front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Boom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo. With 16 kilometers to go, their lead is back up to 2’40 on the peloton - that’s looking pretty good.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Evonik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Air France have been leading the pack for the most part, only rarely supported by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Puma who don’t seem too ambitious to bring the escapees back. There are 110 riders in there, but the final climb could still shake things up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/15.jpg

And we do get some attacks! Who else but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard would be the one to kick things off as the peloton moves past some of the former escapees! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Guldhammer are the first to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/16.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes increases the pace up front and only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol can follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard’s attempt was short-lived, so now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ulissi attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez again trying to counter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes crosses the line first, adding six points to his KoM lead. But just as important: The trio has extended their lead on the peloton to three minutes. With just 13 kilometers to go, this is now their stage to lose. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol couldn’t keep up, but if he makes it back, he’d be the best sprinter in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ulissi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Guldhammer had established a small gap, but it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare himself who brings them back. But that effort probably comes too late if he’s looking at the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/20.jpg

The moves reduced the peloton to just 33 riders. GC-wise, all major contenders are in there, 22nd overall pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Laengen is the best-placed rider out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/22.jpg

The fight for the stage win is on! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit attacks his companions!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/23.jpg

And he gets a decent gap of 20 seconds pretty quickly. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol is now 45 seconds behind the chasers, closely followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Danacik, who’s made his way past many other escapees with a steady pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/24.jpg

Four kilometers to go and the gap is getting smaller. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus has taken over after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes did most of the work, but they’re still struggling to catch up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/25.jpg

It looked like the favorites would simply coast to the finish together, now that the stage win is out of reach, but no: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard still has some energy left! With another big acceleration, he continues his quest to take back the yellow jersey - he’s 27 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Phinney.

At the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus finally managed to bring back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit. 2,5 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes is on paper clearly the worst sprinter here, but it probably comes down to who has the most energy left after an exhausting day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Henao Montoya lead the chase of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard, keeping him close, but the French doesn’t give up yet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/27.jpg

Entering the final kilometer, the escapees are still just looking at each other carefully, no one wants to be the first to go. You can see the toll this stage has taken on them!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit accelerates with 600 meters to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus immediately tries to overtake him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/29.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit keeps his lead for now, all three going at almost the exact same pace!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/30.jpg

And he takes it! What a fantastic win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Smit and EA Vesuvio! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus finishes second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes comes up just short again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/31.jpg

Further behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard still has a small gap as he passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Boom. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Arndt has taken charge of the peloton now and tries to bring him back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/32.jpg

Seven escapees managed to stay ahead of the peloton. They are, in order: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Bettiol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Danacik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bostner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Anuar Aziz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Augustyn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Prado.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/33.jpg

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Sicard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Boom enter the final kilometer with just the slightest of gaps, but this won’t be enough.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Tour/S9/34.jpg

Indeed, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Demare easily sprints past them and wins the reduced sprint on a finish that seemed taylor-made for him, and he has to wonder why his team did not do more to ensure this sprint would be for the win and not for 11th.

No big changes to the overall today. A couple of riders in the backend of the Top 30 lost some time: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Laengen (previously 22nd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Nesset (23rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin (26th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Frankiny (27th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Novak (29th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Dees (30th) all lose between one and three places, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes moves up to 30th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Grieg - Maersk have a poor day in the teams classification, which they still lead, but now only by 22 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Romain Sicard continues to impress with his ferocious aggressiveness, and it’s understandable why he continues trying after it has served him so well on stage 4. But at this point he might have to be careful not to spend too much energy on ultimately fruitless attempts. Luckily for him, we have two flat stages coming up offering some rest before we head into the Pyrenees on Friday.
