Stage 9
After a tumultuous stage that saw Brenes taking over the polkadots and coming just 2 kilometers short of a stage win, which eventually went to Phinney, the peloton is once again on hilly terrain today.
The circumstances mirror yesterday in so far as it looks like a decent opportunity for a breakaway again, we could see some action among the GC riders towards the end, and if none of that materializes, we have to look at Demare once more. He couldn’t display his full strength yesterday and certainly hopes to do better today to maybe add a third stage win.
Kneisky opens the day with the first attack, followed by two illustrious names in Boom, who won the opening stage last year, and Brenes. The Costa Rican intends to add to his lead in the mountain classification.
Summerhill and Schönberger are the first to join them, Vangstad and Manulang try to catch up as well - a few familiar names from breakaways in the first week.
And they are not the only ones. A long line of riders try to get ahead of the peloton - as expected, a place in the breakaway is coveted on this stage.
And the pack seems content to let all of them go, so we end up with a group of 23 riders a good four and a half minutes ahead of the peloton. Let’s take stock, these are the men in there:
Marycz Danacik Schönberger Kolar Prado Bettiol Tizza Salzmann Bostner Summerhill Galiev Kireva Ioannidis Brenes Anuar Aziz Manulang Smit Kneisky Augustyn Jaramillo Pruus Vangstad Boom
Notably, Moser managed to get five men into this break, Andorra, Indosat and Farfetch’d three each. We also have many riders who’ve been in breaks before.
Brenes leads the mountain classification with 60 points ahead of Danacik with 44 and Galiev with 32. He is also the best-placed rider in the GC (44th, + 14’25) and the best climber, while his teammate Anuar Aziz is the best puncheur of this group, but there are lots of good uphill riders and allrounders present. We’ll see how the category one climb affects things.
The pace wasn’t all that high in the front group up this climb as Summerhill was leading them pretty much all the way - apparently in preparation for this attack by Galiev. Brenes is towards the end of the group.
Galiev went too early and is only fourth over the line behind Bettiol, teammate Summerhill and Ioannidis which brings his total up to 40 mountain points. Alongside Kireva, they establish a small gap to the rest of the group.
Salzmann suffered most up that climb, but after a while, he reunites with everyone else. With 120 kilometers to go, their gap is just over five minutes.
Vangstad, Kireva and Kneisky lead the escapees at the intermediate sprint. The group still consists of 20 riders - Salzmann, Tizza and Marycz fell behind -, but it’s not working very well at all and the peloton has cut their lead to only around two minutes.
On the way to the other mountain sprint, a few more riders have to let go. Summerhill is the first, followed by fellow Andorra teammates Kireva and Galiev. They seem to suffer the long-term consequences of their efforts on the first climb.
They are not the last who lose contact with the front. At the foot of the ascent, only nine riders remain up front: Smit, Brenes, Boom, Pruus, Bettiol, Bostner, Ioannidis, Augustyn and Jaramillo. With 16 kilometers to go, their lead is back up to 2’40 on the peloton - that’s looking pretty good.
Evonik and Air France have been leading the pack for the most part, only rarely supported by Puma who don’t seem too ambitious to bring the escapees back. There are 110 riders in there, but the final climb could still shake things up.
And we do get some attacks! Who else but Sicard would be the one to kick things off as the peloton moves past some of the former escapees! Lopez, Demare and Guldhammer are the first to follow.
Meanwhile, Brenes increases the pace up front and only Pruus, Smit and Bettiol can follow!
Sicard’s attempt was short-lived, so now Ulissi attacks. Lopez again trying to counter.
Brenes crosses the line first, adding six points to his KoM lead. But just as important: The trio has extended their lead on the peloton to three minutes. With just 13 kilometers to go, this is now their stage to lose. Bettiol couldn’t keep up, but if he makes it back, he’d be the best sprinter in the group.
Ulissi, Lopez and Guldhammer had established a small gap, but it’s Demare himself who brings them back. But that effort probably comes too late if he’s looking at the stage win.
The moves reduced the peloton to just 33 riders. GC-wise, all major contenders are in there, 22nd overall Laengen is the best-placed rider out.
The fight for the stage win is on! Smit attacks his companions!
And he gets a decent gap of 20 seconds pretty quickly. Bettiol is now 45 seconds behind the chasers, closely followed by Danacik, who’s made his way past many other escapees with a steady pace.
Four kilometers to go and the gap is getting smaller. Pruus has taken over after Brenes did most of the work, but they’re still struggling to catch up.
It looked like the favorites would simply coast to the finish together, now that the stage win is out of reach, but no: Sicard still has some energy left! With another big acceleration, he continues his quest to take back the yellow jersey - he’s 27 seconds behind Phinney.
At the front, Pruus finally managed to bring back Smit. 2,5 kilometers to go. Brenes is on paper clearly the worst sprinter here, but it probably comes down to who has the most energy left after an exhausting day.
Alarcon, Demare, Morton and Henao Montoya lead the chase of Sicard, keeping him close, but the French doesn’t give up yet!
Entering the final kilometer, the escapees are still just looking at each other carefully, no one wants to be the first to go. You can see the toll this stage has taken on them!
Smit accelerates with 600 meters to go and Pruus immediately tries to overtake him!
But Smit keeps his lead for now, all three going at almost the exact same pace!
And he takes it! What a fantastic win for Smit and EA Vesuvio! Pruus finishes second, Brenes comes up just short again.
Further behind, Sicard still has a small gap as he passes Boom. Arndt has taken charge of the peloton now and tries to bring him back.
Seven escapees managed to stay ahead of the peloton. They are, in order: Bettiol, Jaramillo, Danacik, Bostner, Anuar Aziz, Augustyn and Prado.
Behind them Sicard and Boom enter the final kilometer with just the slightest of gaps, but this won’t be enough.
Indeed, Demare easily sprints past them and wins the reduced sprint on a finish that seemed taylor-made for him, and he has to wonder why his team did not do more to ensure this sprint would be for the win and not for 11th.
No big changes to the overall today. A couple of riders in the backend of the Top 30 lost some time: Laengen (previously 22nd), Nesset (23rd), Karnulin (26th), Frankiny (27th), Novak (29th) and Dees (30th) all lose between one and three places, while Brenes moves up to 30th. Grieg - Maersk have a poor day in the teams classification, which they still lead, but now only by 22 seconds to Gazelle.
Romain Sicard continues to impress with his ferocious aggressiveness, and it’s understandable why he continues trying after it has served him so well on stage 4. But at this point he might have to be careful not to spend too much energy on ultimately fruitless attempts. Luckily for him, we have two flat stages coming up offering some rest before we head into the Pyrenees on Friday.
