Stage 8
The peloton starts the second week with a nasty stage through the Massif central. Seven classified climbs en route to Saint Étienne make for a very open stage. It’s not that hard to imagine a first breakaway win here and with a lot of mountain points to collect, many will try. But the peloton has been very strict so far and brought every group back. If this plays out more like a hills classic, it’s hard to look past Demare as a favorite once again.
We could also see some more action between the GC contenders as stronger puncheurs may try and gain some ground. Sicard has been very active in the first two hilly stages and surely wants the yellow jersey back, but Phinney is a good rider on this terrain as well. On the other hand, weaker puncheurs among the climbers like Alarcon, Henao Montoya and the already suffering Schleck have to be very attentive today.
The first group up front includes Hepburn and Danacik, but more interestingly also Brenes. The Costa Rican was a pre-race contender for a Top 20 or even Top 15 position overall but he has lost more than 15 minutes already and now seems to focus on stage wins and maybe the polkadots - probably the smart way to go.
The three are joined by Walsleben and, after a slightly longer chase, Galiev. The Kazakh is a good climber, but not very suited for this punchy type of stage, at least on paper. Either way, Brenes is easily the strongest uphill rider of the bunch, but Danacik is a solid allrounder to watch out for, too.
Brenes takes the first mountain sprint ahead of Danacik, while Walsleben is already in trouble. None of these guys had any mountain points yet, but the first three climbs alone offer a maximum of 30 points - Vosekalns leads the ranking with 28.
Walsleben quickly made it back to the group on the descent, but as soon as Danacik accelerates towards the second mountain sprint, he’s off the back again. The escapees currently have a gap of six minutes to the peloton.
Without trouble, Brenes collects another ten points. He’s got a gap to Danacik and Galiev, who in turn have shaken Hepburn.
A similar picture just a few kilometers later - and with that, a new KoM leader!
Danacik and Galiev also make their way up the ranking, but they’re no match for Brenes. And there are many more points to claim - the peloton is still more than five minutes behind.
The first riders start dropping from the peloton, once more it’s Vlatos with, among others, a few riders from SPAR and Podium Ambition.
The breakaway got back together after a while and Brenes adds another four points at the Cat 3 sprint but for the first time today, he’s beaten by Danacik.
A coalition of mostly SPAR, Tinkoff and Evonik have been cutting down the lead of the escapees to about two minutes, but the peloton is still pretty large with around 130 riders.
But at least Brenes is not done yet! He rushes up that climb and distances all of his companions on the way to the summit. Danacik continues to be the second-best of that group, and he catches back up on the way to the final category two climb of the day.
Of course, a second place over the top there is again the best the Czech can hope for.
With Walsleben and Hepburn caught, Frankiny and Vosekalns attack from the peloton, but it’s only enough for four and two points behind Galiev.
And that’s not enough to keep Brenes in reach - he’s got the polkadots secured! He has also increased his lead to around 2’30 with 50 kilometers to go.
Meanwhile, the peloton has been reduced pretty drastically to under 40 men. The only Top 30 riders missing are Nesset, Kangert and Dees, but also riders like Ulissi, Chernetskiy and Anuar Aziz have fallen behind. Demare, on the other hand, is still there and well-positioned, too.
On the following descent, Dombrowski suffers a flat tire! After Schleck two days ago, could he be the next top contender to lose time due to that? Aru drops back to help, but Majka and Brambilla stay with the other favorites.
On the final categorized climb of the day, Danacik is caught after a valiant effort. Brenes, on the other hand, is still about a minute ahead! Dombrowski is safely back within the peloton, luckily for him the pace wasn’t too high.
Again, Frankiny attacks to collect a few more points behind Brenes. This time, he’s accompanied by Novikov and the two open a sizeable gap to the peloton.
As we might have expected, we see Sicard on the attack! Just as the peloton passes the summit, he accelerates and gets some seperation! Phinney is quite a few positions further back, behind the green jersey of Demare. Alarcon and Guldhammer are the favorites closest to the front.
Here’s what the final 10 kilometers look like. It’s mostly flat and downhill with two very short uphill sections. That’s pretty good for Brenes and his two new chasers, who are still a minute ahead of the favorites.
Sicard catches up to Novikov and Frankiny, but Gazelle lead the chase and keep them very close.
But into the final four flat kilometers, there’s still one man ahead of everyone else! If Brenes pulls this off, it would be a monumental feat - he has a real chance!
But Sicard is not done yet! He wants that yellow jersey back and the 20 bonus seconds for a stage win alone would be enough, even without a time gap!
Gazelle is still chasing, Madrazo safe in fourth position. Phinney is back at the front, as is Demare, the obvious favorite if the escapees get caught.
Sicard reaches Brenes with two kilometers to go and they have around 15 seconds on the peloton. But there’s still that short ramp coming up.
They pass that still with a small lead, and a very sharp S curve leads to the finish, which works well in favor of the leading duo. This is going to be so close!
Sicard accelerates and Brenes can’t counter - the stage is just two kilometers too long for him, but the Indosat leader gets compensated with the polkadots. Phinney now jumps to the front in the peloton - he could retain his jersey with the bonus seconds from a third place!
Or second place? Or more? Phinney moves past Brenes towards Sicard, followed by Schleck. Demare got boxed in and tries to pass through.
Phinney almost draws level with the French a few meters before the line!
And he actually takes it! Phenomenal sprint by the American to not only stay in yellow but actually extend his lead! Sicard misses a second stage win in heartbreaking fashion, Schleck has his first positive moment of the race and finishes third.
Lecuisinier and Morton come in next. Demare can’t use his superior speed in this technical finish where positioning was key, he falls short of expectations in 10th place. Sicard comes a good bit closer in the points classification as well.
Arndt is the best-placed rider to lose time today. He got caught behind after Sicard’s numerous accelerations, ends up 1’21 behind the first group and drops from 17th to 19th.
Other than that, the only change in the Top 20 is Sicard moving into second overall past Madrazo, who loses 12 seconds to the French and 20 seconds to Phinney, as does everyone else, of course. All riders made the time limit today, and Brenes is the new KoM leader.
